The North American Monarch Butterfly population has declined over 80% from 1999 to 2016. (Pleasants) These spectacles are one of the species on the endangered species list, and were recently added to the list in July of 2022. This is a very troubling and very recent addition to this list, and the main reason for their declining numbers is habitat loss by use of herbicides. Although these butterflies may seem to have a grim future, there are and can be many ways to stop the alarming decline of this species. Today you will be informed about how monarch butterflies help the environment, the ways that you can help preserve these species, and the conservation efforts that are being put into place to make sure they do not go extinct. Monarch butterflies are one of the most excellent pollinators. They …show more content…
The monarch butterfly reproduces by laying eggs on milkweed plants. These plants are poisonous and when the eggs hatch, the monarch caterpillars will eat them which in turn will help them develop a strong immune system for the caterpillar, and later, butterfly. These butterflies help shape the environment in so many ways, however their numbers are rapidly decreasing across the country. There are many things that we as humans can do to help the decline of monarch butterflies. There are many ways that we can help preserve this butterfly species. A monarch butterfly’s main food source is milkweed. Milkweeds are the host plant for monarch caterpillars when their eggs hatch. By planting milkweeds, you also give the plants a new and healthier environment to grow in, as well as providing a food source for other bugs and insects. In addition to milkweeds, various nectar plants like culver’s root, which is a purple root coneflower, and the New England Aster. Both the milkweeds and these nectar plants provide a great source of food and hydration for these migrating
Monarch Butterflies and Butterfly Weed, a type of milkweed, have coevolved as plant and pollinator. This means that they both rely on one another to survive. Milkweed is the primary source of nutrition for monarchs. Monarchs only eat Asclepias tuberosa a particular species of Milkweed. The monarch relies on toxins in the milkweed to fend off predators such as birds. The toxic tendencies of the milkweed plants caused the government to attempt o eradicated the plant along roadsides and in cow pastures. This has caused a major decline in population of milkweed, which is also endangering monarchs. Milkweed relies on the monarch to pollinate it so that it can reproduce.
...ricia icarioides missionensis is one method that will allow scientists to understand which areas the butterflies are more populous in order to determine which areas need more protection. Monitoring will also help scientists know which conditions need to be mimicked in order to create a stable environment for the butterflies. Enhancing the Icaricia icarioides missionensis habitat is another plan that can assist in repopulating the species. It will create environments that are conducive to the goal of repopulation. A third plan is the relocation of Icaricia icarioides missionensis butterflies. This plan will remove them from their currently endangered habitats and reintroduce them to a similar, but safer habitat. In conclusion these are three methods with which human beings can attempt to reverse some of the damage they have caused to Icaricia icarioides missionensis.
Underwater shark nets make us feel safer at the beach, but are we? That’s the question. Are we safe? There are lots of possibilities that the shark, with sharp like knife teeth, may outsmart us. Because of shark attacks we use nets, called shark nets. However, that doesn’t mean nets used in the past prevented shark attacks. These nets don’t only trap sharks they trap other sea creatures.
GENERAL PURPOSE: To persuade the audience that pit bulls are nice loving dogs. SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To persuade the audience that pit bulls are not naturally dangerous. CENTRAL IDEA: Pit bulls are just like any other dog. It depends on how a pit bull or any other breed of dog is nurtured to determine the characteristics of the dog.
The gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) is a highly disruptive species that can, and has played a distinctive role in the lives of many organisms. Included in these organisms are various deciduous trees and shrubs, wildlife species that share the same environment, and even humans. The gypsy moth destroys the beauty of woodlands via defoliation, alters ecosystems and wildlife habitats, and disrupts our own lives. It should therefore come as no surprise that the U.S. Department of Agriculture and many other agencies have taken huge steps to help diminish populations of this small, yet persistent species. In an effort to control these overwhelming populations, five chemical control agents have been used to suppress and/or eradicate the gypsy moth. Following, is a discussion of each chemical and their potentially hazardous effects on humans.
When someone says the word Shamu many of us think of a happy, active, go lucky orca whale. What if I told you that the orca whales at sea world are really lost, heartbroken, and most of them are unhealthy? Would you then stop supporting them?
On the contrary, President Obama “unveiled a plan aimed at stopping the rapid decline in bee and butterfly populations” (“On May 19”). His plans are to reduce the death rate of bees which in turn will help out the agricultural production. He also plans to clear land in order to give the bees a bigger environment in which to repopulation and will ensure that no bees are harmed in the process (“On May 19”). The president sees the devastation that the decline could cause and is trying to combat the issue. The European Union has banned three pesticides in order to combat the decline but “have fallen short of providing adequate safeguards for the re-propagation of bee colonies”(“Bee research”). Governments are taking notice of the problem ahead yet still we are until to achieve the full support of all
Ruby-crowned kinglets play a role in our ecosystem by helping to control pest population and eating insects. Many of the insects they eat are considered pests to humans (9). They also eat casebearers an invasive insect species, which may be harmful to certain plants. There are no
“No bees, no honey; no work, no money.” Bees are becoming an endangered species due to colony collapse disorder, a colony no longer existing due to a combination of deadly factors. Bees are very important in our lives from making food cheaper to making honey-added in many medicines, foods, and other products. There are a few steps we can take in order to save our honeybees.
The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is native to both North and South America. The monarch butterflies are unable to with stand the freezing winters that North America has so to survive they travel down to South America, which there they lay eggs to form offspring to travel back in the spring. The monarch butterflies journey begins in late summer, August to September, and can take several months, with the majority of monarchs reaching Mexico in early November (Wildlife). In order for the monarch to be able to travel this long distance it needs to conserve enough energy to travel. The energy in which the monarch conserves for this travel comes from the nectar of milkweed (Asclepius humistrata).
Others include birds, butterflies, and the wind; however, honey bees, by far, are the best at pollinating plants. Collecting pollen is their whole life’s purpose, according to Michigan State University’s article, “Native Plants and Ecosystem Services”. Over one hundred forty three million acres of plants in America are sprayed with a bee-killing insecticide that has been banned in Europe by the European Food Safety Authority (Sarich). Promote ecological farming, and ban all bee-harming pesticides.
For those of you who are die-hard fans of Jenelle Evans, she has revealed something right now. The Hollywood celebrity, known to appear in Teen Mom 2, has added another member to their family. That's right folks, she welcomes a new one to their amazing family.
Hello, esteemed listeners,. Today, I am here to discuss a critical environmental issue – the harmful impacts of lionfish on our valuable coral reefs. Originally from the Indo-Pacific region, lionfish have now invaded non-native habitats like the Florida Keys and the Cyprus Sea. These invasive predators have caused significant harm to local ecosystems, presenting a grave danger to our marine environments. With razor sharp venomous spines and an insatiable appetite, these creatures have obliterated the population of herbivores that are pivotal in the restoration of the health of these reefs.

The problem I have chosen is the problem of endangered species. An endangered species is a group of organisms that have a risk of becoming extinct. More than 90% of all species that have ever lived on earth has become extinct. Many reasons for this are habitat loss, predators, too few organisms for sustainable reproduction. Habitat loss is the most widespread cause of species endangerment and extinction. Usually, this is happening because of human activity including deforestation and pollution. Pollution and climate change affect the ecosystem, resulting in rise of sea levels, melting of glaciers/ice caps, and pollution can cause death to many seabirds and and marine creatures living on the coast and in the ocean. Rising sea levels can
