All great leaps in medicine have always seemed like heresy at first but have always turned out to be for the betterment of everyone, and genetic engineering is no different. Genetic Engineering has been banned in the US but has flourished outside the country and brought about seemingly unreal results, such as allowing infertile women to become pregnant and bringing about a possible cure for Muscular Dystrophy which is currently labeled as incurable. Genetic Engineering is the next step in modern medicine yet has already been banned in the US due to its sinister and incorrect press of allowing humans to play god. However, countries outside of North America have cast doubt aside and already begun research on Genetic Engineering. This previously …show more content…

Which makes sense because every doctor 's dream is to cure all disease and very far from now wiping out bad and diseased genes may not be mere science fiction. The author of the article “Engineering The Perfect Baby” Antonio Regalado speaks with a very knowledgeable Genetic Engineer about this point. “Feng told me he approves of the idea of germ-line engineering. Isn’t the goal of medicine to reduce suffering?... Feng said, such problems may eventually be ironed out, and edited people will be born. To me, it’s possible in the long run to dramatically improve health, lower costs. It’s a kind of prevention,” he said. “It’s hard to predict the future, but correcting disease risks is definitely a possibility and should be supported. I think it will be a reality.” (Antonio Regalado) Going off what Feng said Genetic Engineering is the closest humans have come to a cure for all disease or more specifically a cure for suffering. Following up Regalado is Rathi Akshat who takes a more realistic look at Genetic Engineering, taking in both the good and the bad in his article, “2015 Was The Year It Became OK To Genetically Engineer Babies”. ”For now, then, the only foreseeable use for gene-editing is to prevent disease. And the goal is to make genetic tools good enough to do that without any unintended consequences.” (Akshat). What Akshat is referring to here is a main reason as to why genetic …show more content…

However, we’ll never see the fruit that Genetic Engineering can bear if we continue to look for the possibility of worms. Scientists should be given a grant to do monitored research on genetic engineering to fully bring out Genetic Engineering 's potential. However, if the potential of Genetic Engineering turns out to be more miniscule than anticipated then we should ban research. In the modern day of 2016 people should stop having their minds clouded by the unknown, the last thing we want is Genetic Engineering to be seen as a modern day witch
