Due to certain circumstances, students are not permitted to leave school grounds to go have lunch off-campus. Critics are quick to argue that it is unsafe, and adds unnecessary dangers that could be avoidable by not leaving the school area. It is arguable that such doubt can be preventable with precautions that the school and staff can take in order to prevent any foreseeable accidents, and also reward those who do well in school by offering them off campus passes to let them go to lunch, in return students will have to maintain good grades and behavior. Therefore, students in school should be given the freedom to leave school campus during their lunch period as long as they maintain good grades, good attendance, and good behavior.

disputation between off-campus lunches or on campus lunch is still widely challenged by students and school staff. It is well known that leaving school grounds can be hazardous as staff no longer are in control of what students can do. To reason with that fact, when students reach junior or senior year, a fellow student states that “If students have the privilege of an off-campus lunch, they will gain more responsibility and experience how the real world works” (Hunter, “Off-Campus Lunches Benefit Students, District"). Such compromise would be beneficial for those who are about to graduate High School as they can slowly get used to the world after school. Moreover, this advances to the next debate which is that students are supposedly rushing to go get food. A reporter from a KSL television station, Bliesner points out that “The time pressure to get to lunch and get back to class creates a near road race mentality.” An agreement cannot be made by such statement because not every school is miles away from a nearby food location, some schools are even at a walking distance and other schools are not. There shouldn’t be a reason why students can’t leave school grounds to go and eat. Soon those students will eventually go on their own with little to no supervision. In addition, the food that is being provided on school campuses are not at all that different from eating junk food.
and can also be costly considering a bag of chips is a dollar and half of the bag is nothing but air. An article written by Bannister from MRCTV a non-profit and education organization writes in his article on how “School nutrient professional’s from across the country bemoaned the negative impacts of new nutrition standards on school meals. “It is not too hard to argue with the statement as some schools serves pizza every day, and salad located somewhere in the cafeteria. To add to this, since school is essentially serving junk food with its spicy chicken sandwiches or student stores selling nothing but chips and ice cream, Bannister adds that “The new standards are actually driving students to eat more junk food and seek out tastier meals.” Bannisters comment is not hard to disagree with especially when students are spending hard earned money on food that students don’t even like. Why spend money on food that students dislike when they could drive 5 minutes to buy tastier food.
Finally, having an open campus can benefit both the students and staff if students have to earn the privilege to leave school grounds. A debate team from Alabama points out one of the pros of having an open campus. The article mentions that “off-campus passes can be used as an incentive and motivator for students to earn good grades, make wise choices, and maintain exception
behavior.” That would benefit both students and staff as students get rewarded and staff does not have to worry as much as students are trying to be eligible for school passes. Capili, 3 Moving on, passes would have limitations like only 11th and 12th graders are only eligible, and also a fellow student from Daily American declares an opinion that students should only be able to leave school “if they have transportation and parental consent.” Parents would have to be aware that any accident regarding their children, school would not be responsible for any accidents. The topics mentioned above are just a few of many reasons why students should be able to leave school grounds during lunch. Having an open campus can greatly benefit both the student’s and the staff as students try to earn good grades to earn lunch passes, and also staff wouldn’t have to look over students as much as an effect. The reasons stated above should be a few of many reasons why certain students in school should be given the freedom to leave school campus during a student’s lunch period.
Having different food can affect a child health. There are milky ways, cake, cookies, pizza and lets just add some French fries in there and call that lunch. Don’t forget the drink sweet tea, pop and milk that one doesn’t choose to drink it. The students would go back to the class rooms after twenty minutes and be hungry at the end of the da. Garland said, “Instead, we allow school cafeterias to dispense the same junk food that kids could buy in any mall” (621). There has been so much junk food and soft drinks in schools that makes the student health unsafe and a distraction to their education. Garland mentioned that the students are filling up with fat, salt and sugar rather than filling up with fruit, whole grains and vegetables. Schools should be about healthiness, and well balanced diets. With having Students eat healthy can boost up their energy and ability to learn. With that being said when I was in high school it was nothing but junk food for three years. When Michele Obama changed the law on the school lunches my senior lunches have changed. It was nothing but healthy food like whole grain, no sweets, two scoops of fruits and vegetables. At Odessa they had a school store loaded with junk food that would be sold out by forth period. When the law came to the school there was nothing but baked chip and replaced with other baked nutrition food or we had nothing at all. The drink machines were changed out
Wandering kids. Bumper to bumper traffic. Drug dealing. Is this the picture drawn when local students have fifty minutes of freedom during lunch to do whatever they please? Students should not be allowed to leave their school campus during lunch. An open campus would lead to truancy, disturb local businesses and neighborhoods, and cause crime.
Allowing healthier school lunches will decrease obesity in children because it will give them the proper nutrition to reduce the risk of health issues. Since obesity causes many health issues, maintaining a proper nutrition will reduce the risk of health issues. According to Star- Telegram, a daily newspaper that serves Fort Worth and areas of North Texas states, “[School lunches that have] a meal of pizza sticks, a banana, raisins and whole milk has given way to whole wheat spaghetti with meat sauce, a whole wheat roll green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, kiwi and low-fat milk … This change will help more than 2.4 million Texas students who receive a free or reduced- price school lunch to lead healthier, more active lives—in and out of the classroom”(Par. 2 and 4). School lunches are supposed to guarantee students a well balance meal, so they can have the energy to proceed with their classes throughout the day. Meanwhile, students who receive a f...
Since the beginning of time, schools were always a place we could trust. A place where we could send our kid(s) off to without worry of what they may be learning, doing, or eating, but perhaps we should be. As the craving of fast food is growing, so is the demand for it. Some schools have taken advantage of this and brought fast food into their schools, providing it for lunch. A high school in California serves McDonald’s, Subway, and even Quiznos to their students for lunch (Lehmann). The school claims the kids are more likely to buy school food when they see brand foods (n.p.). Schools get money from the National School Lunch Program for every meal they serve, but that money from the government only covers so much (n.p.). To pay the rest of the lunch staff, facilities costs, and food, schools turn to the money they make by selling lunches and breakfast to their students (n.p.). Another school in California has even tried to mimic Round Table, a brand name pizza in their area, with healthier ingredients, but was only able to sell 250-300; when they sold Round T...
But, if they do not like the food served, they won’t eat so they starve for the rest of the school day, which can lead to not focusing on class, feeling sick, and eating too much at dinner. The final reason our school should get a new lunch menu is because there are many problems with the food. For example, many students say the food is cold, fake, and disgusting. Students, Jordyn Gilbert and Leah Gelik, found mold on the lettuce in the salad.
“More than 76 percent of schools sell soft drinks and sweetened fruit drinks, but fewer than half offered bottles water. Fewer than 15 percent sell low-fat or nonfat yogurt, and fewer than one third order skim milk. Only 25 percent of schools say they've reduced fats and oils in recipes.”(Spake, 2). Choices at lunch range from greasy to unidentifiable. Most students eat school lunches five days a week. So most of the food they eat throughout the week comes from the school cafeteria. Although, the schools do tend to offer healthy choices such as salads, subs, skim milk, and unlimited fruits and vegetables. “Each week Phoenix students are served a variety of fruits and vegetables from guava to grapes and jicima to red peppers. School officials hope that by exposing children to fruits and vegetable they may develop a taste for them and request their parents to buy them.”(Bailey, 1). Real meat is becoming an issue in schools. “According to reports issued by the Physicians Committee for responsible Medicine (PCRM) the USDA dumps hundreds of millions of pounds of surplus beef, chicken, cheese, and pork on the National School lunch Program.”(Lord, 42). Chicken isn't whole white meat; some of it doesn't even taste like meat! Let’s move on to unhealthy foods. There are unlimited amounts of un...
The education system has been changing in recent years and the same problems that existed continue to get worse as years pass. Problems that were seen as minor at first have now grown. How to change the public higher education system has been a major topic of discussion but there has still been no major action taken. We struggle to figure out how much funding is needed for higher education and where it should come from. Our people continue to suffer from an underfunded high cost system. The wealthy minority of people continue to be the only ones accounted for and it is time to change this. We need to adapt to the changes and the costs that continue to rise. It is time to help the struggling middle and lower classes. I believe that the best
Soda’s are leaving vending machines and being be substituted with less-sugary drinks, bread is being substituted for whole wheat and milk is being substituted to fat free milk. First Lady Michelle Obama took it into her own hands to provide the United states children with food that meets nutritional standards. “Through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act championed by the First Lady and signed by President Obama, USDA made the first major changes in school meals in 15 years, which will help us raise a healthier generation of children.” (Leonard). Healthy Hunger- Free Act went into effect in 2012 some of the changes were that meals needed 5 components: grain, meat, fruit, vegetable, and milk. Students MUST take at least 1/2 cup of fruit OR vegetable for a meal.
Many parents of the students at these schools were outraged to find out that their healthy, homemade lunches were being replaced by the schools gluten-filled meals. According to James Joyner of Outside The Beltway a preschooler had gotten her bagged lunch taken away because an official at her school labeled it as “unhealthy”. The young girls lunch consisted of a turkey & cheese sandwich, a banana, chips, and an apple juice pouch. Her lunch was said to not have “met the USDA guidelines”. USDA guidelines state that lunches (whether they’re brought from home or supplied by the school) must include one serving of the following: grain, milk(dairy), meat(protein), and either a fruit or vegetable. Also, if the child is missing one of the food items a childcare provider is supposed to equip them with that missing item. Instead of providing her with the missing food item, the bagged lunch official took her whole lunchbox, and made the girl eat the school lunch (which was chicken nuggets). The reason for this action is still unclear to the child’s mother. The USDA reports that less than one-third of schools in the United States stay below the recommended standard for fat content in their meals. It seems as though multiple schools across th...
Aside from this many people still argue that there is not a gap in education. Education is fair, america is fair. If a boy living Chicago, well below the poverty line, wants an education he can get it!
First of all, students aren’t motivated to eat unhealthy, not-tasty food. If you observed students buying lunch in the cafeteria, you don’t often see them buying these kinds, but not limited to, foodstuffs: burritos (which are just beans wrapped in tortillas), “burgers” (meat slapped on two slices of bread), etc. Even the chicken nuggets aren’t very popular. And the prices! $3.75-$4.75 is not worth such “garbahge”, as a teacher would say. Out of the twenty five students I surveyed, 56% stated that they would like to see their cafeteria changed. The reasons being were, “The same stuff everyday – it gets boring”, “Tastes like plastic”, ...
(Dame Suzi Leather, the Daily Mail 1, page 2). Schools have a responsibility to provide healthy food choices and not just the cheapest ones (which usually happens to be the unhealthy kind). The majority of schools have contracts with unhealthy food suppliers. Most of the budget usually goes to funding sports. What the school boards do not realize is that eating healthy is a crucial part of staying fit, and if the school districts were to pick healthier food suppliers they would see that local food suppliers would gladly provide them with these choices, as it is good business for them.
Getting freedom from the schools is an important thing for those students that prove they have the responsibly and mindset to not mess up outside. Getting the chance to prove yourself to the school and to your teachers about your responsibility. In general students should have more freedom and chance their senior year to be able to leave and come back if needed since most senior are ahead in credits and need study halls and
Teens today face a lot of pressure. Many students deal with difficult life situations that hinder them from focusing on their futures. This can lead to a loss of interest in school and school events, such as a sports, clubs, or after school programs. Teens start to prioritize other things over their education. Every year, over 1.2 million students will leave school without earning a high school diploma in the United States alone (“11”). That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day (“11”). The United States, which used to have the highest graduation rates of any country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries (“11”). Students may not realize that by dropping out of high school they are more likely to commit crimes, become parents at a young age, use and abuse alcohol and drugs, and live in poverty (“Drop”). Dropouts make up the majority of those
Education is one of the most important aspects of our society. By educating Americas youth we are molding the minds who are going to run and find new solutions to the problems are country faces today and for the future. However education, in general, is facing some serious problems. One of the most important aspects in running anything, including a school, is finances. If a school does not have adequate funding, the students will not be able to learn and grow to achieve their goals. The problem schools across the country and in particular Ohio is facing is, what is the best way to fund public school? There are many aspects that go into the funding of school but the question is being raised, do we need to change the way we go about funding our
