Schools need to be improved, but extending the school day is not the answer. First, schools should find a way to make improvements with the amount of time they already have. It’s not about the extended school hours it’s about what you do with the time you have in a normal day. Schools should maximize the time they already have in a normal school day. Longer doesn’t necessarily mean better.
Most American students now go to school for 180 six-hour days, which is 1080 total hours. Senator Kennedy’s initiative to extend the school day proposed increasing each student’s school time by 30% - a radical increase. A school day extended by 30% would be about 7.8 hours. A school year extended by 30% would be about 234 days (Word Generation 3.11, 2012). Some students think it’s crucial to have a long summer vacation. Kids still need their breaks to relax. Longer school days will shorten the days for

When students are too tired or mentally exhausted to concentrate, the last hour of the day becomes useless. Some students, even as old as eighth-graders, suffer from post-lunch attention deficit syndrome and aren't mentally prepared to take on an additional hour of classwork (Tucker, Kristine. Demand Media. Retrieved on December 13, 2015). They are already tired after lunch. Extending school days also cuts into time families are together.
Extended school days means that teachers will be required to work longer hours or additional teachers must be hired to work the extra time. Teachers unions have expressed that they don't want to work longer hours. Teachers already arrive early to prepare for class, stay late to record grades, spend extra time preparing lessons and attend after-hours teacher meetings and parent-teacher conferences. (Tucker, Kristine. Demand Media. Retrieved on December 13, 2015). If teachers are asked to work a longer day, they should be paid for
The alarm beeps again sounding like a fire alarm going off. School starts before 8am. Using your fingers to hold open your eyes and dragging your feet, you get in the car and drive yourself to school. Will you even be able to make it through your day? School days for teens start to early. Teens aren't getting the sleep recommended for a healthy start to their day. Later start times for middle and high schools are proven to benefit both students and teachers.
Based on the article on The National Sleep Foundation, when it's time for school the average teen body still thinks it's the middle of the night.
... with Europe and Asia, the American Board of Education placed project schools around our nation to examine the effect of extended school hours. Extra hours, however, will not contribute to increasing test scores as well as other factors can. Instead, the government should provide our schools with more qualified teachers. Without professional teachers, extending the hours in class cannot possibly help US students.
Many students feel very tired after a couple of months in school. Imagine if they never got time to be kids. Students need to have enough time to relax and be kids during their break. Even if students have the same amount of days off, One big break would be better for them. This would help with family vacations. Having summers off would help kids participate in other activities that they couldn't during the school year.
School should be four days a week with an extra hour added to each school day because it would save money for the school system, increase student motivation, stimulate the economy, and promote student achievement. There has been a decrease in education due to the small amount of resources, causing classrooms to be bigger and children not being able to extend their knowledge. Even though the economy has been falling, each school district has been working hard to promote student education, which could mean trading a traditional school schedule for a four-day school week. Replacing a normal school schedule for the four day school week can raise the school budget tremendously. (Hart, Demand Media).
School can be known as a dreadful reality of everyday life for a countless number of people. Students and teachers all over the country are constantly looking forward to the next day off of school. Often times students find every excuse to miss school, even if it’s just for a couple of hours. Having to go to school five days in a row with only a two day break is a lot to handle for most people. Many schools are converting from a five-day school week to a four-day school week for many different reasons. Colby Public Schools needs to implement a four day school week because it helps lower the stress levels of students and teachers, improves overall attendance, and saves excess amounts of money.
Summer breaks are way too long and children forget a lot of information throughout the summer break. A lot of that valuable time teachers spent is lost in only a few months. Not only is the teachers time lost but also the child’s, during the fall teachers spend time reviewing from the previous year (Nair, n.d.). Educationalists noted that during a modified or year-long school year students are expected to forget less the information they acquired because they experience not as many interruptions. Children may not experience loss of knowledge with a year-long school year. The year-long school calendar in fact, has the same amount of school days than a regular school calendar, but the breaks are spread out throughout the year. Therefore, when the breaks are spread out the children and teachers experience less burnout from school. These breaks are called intercessions (Ballinger, 2008). Kids have 4-6 weeks off of school during the summer instead of 2-3 months and the findings are positive (Bennecke, 2010). There are three different options for a year-long school calendar. The first option is a 45-15 calendar, 45 days of instruction followed by 15 days of vacation/ intercession. The second option is the 60-20 calendar, 60 days in school followed by 20 days’ vacation/ intercession. Finally, the third option is the 45-10 calendar, 45 days of instruction followed by 10 days of vacation/ intersession
Teachers have a set number of days to get through everything required by the state to their students. They already take time out of their
There are many opinions and studies about reforming school days. Some people are concerned that longer school days would bring more difficulties. However, there are numerous studies and practical examples that prove that we improve students’ performance by lengthening school days. Finally, the economy and our society will benefit from expanding school days.
Also, a longer break would let them spend time with family members. Students would like a longer summer break to spend time with family members. Students could stay with other family members and cook out with them, play games with their family members, and talk with their family members as well.
They should be able to have enough time in the afternoon to distract themselves with other healthy activities which ensure the development of new skills and is also relaxing. Many students’ everyday activities may also be affected. Students who like to read or do their homework in the library or just spend time in any other public place will be affected since they will have less time in them because of later release times. According to Rachel Pancare, who holds a Master of Science in childhood education, "An earlier release offers many children a chance to relax or take a break before beginning their homework assignments." With the new schedule, students will be too centralized on school which can lead to stress. It is important to combat or relieve stress since it can lead to a huge variety of other problems or disorders like unhealthy eating habits, sleep deprivation, and depression, which end up affecting academics. However, these health concerns are just as likely to be present if the school schedule starts early in the
Most children attend school for about 6.5 hours per day. Some people argue that this not enough time for children to master key concepts while others say that children spend too much time in school and on homework which leaves them little time for family or fun activities. “There are many benefits to year-round schooling—including consistency, less time spent relearning material, and the implications that year-round schooling has for closing the achievement gap” (Lynch, 2016, par. 1). Currently, more than 700 schools have extended their day. Massachusetts extended their school day so that it was 8 hours and found that they went up 44 percent in math,19 percent in science, and 39 percent in language arts (“Should students spend more time in
High school students should not have their summer break shortened because it gives them more time to recover from a long academic year. During the school year, students are expected to complete assignments and study for tests while participating in extracurricular activities and maintaining part-time jobs. Very little time is left for self-reflection and leisure. As a result, it is common for high school students to feel worn down by a rigorous schedule. Having time for a complete break gives students an opportunity for rest that they do not have during the school year. In an article written by Joe Matthews titled “Summer Break Is Important to Students and Families” Matthews presents the benefits of summer break. Matthews writes, “The history's
For most of the delinquent students got caught from their slightly misbehaving act for the first few times is not really a problem. What they don’t know about is that there is a program that can literarily handle even the most delinquent student must also bow down in surrender. The program is called “Weekend School”, also known for many students as “Hellish Torture School.” It was considered the most terrible and awful program and most students were afraid of. Because they believe that if they get into the weekend school, they have only one percent chance of survive. This programs it only available to most of the South East Asia countries middle school and high school. The purpose is to deal with delinquent students who get caught for their
The extra day of classes would cut down on work days for students. Saturday classes would also mean one less day of rest for both students and teachers alike. & nbsp; Less time with a family could lower a student's grade point average. For some students Saturday is the only time they can see family. This would be true for students whose parents are divorced or who both work Monday through Friday. Not seeing family could lead to a bad attitude or severe depression. Some students have close relationships with their parents and want or need to spend time with their parents. A student with a bad attitude or severe depression cannot learn well and perform well in class. Not being able to learn well will not bring an already low education level up. & nbsp; The extra day of school would cut down on work days for students. A cut-down on work hours during the weekend could influence a student to work more late-night hours to earn money. for car payments or college funds. That would create a very tired, unprepared student. That student, in turn, will not do well with school work. The extra day of school would take away from any other job a teacher may have. Some teachers have additional jobs to earn extra money. Less time to work another job could create a bad attitude. A teacher with a bad attitude will not be able to teach effectively. & nbsp; One extra day of school cuts into precious relaxation time for students and teachers alike. Just one day may not sound like a lot; but, for a busy student, it could mean the difference between an A and a B. That one extra day of rest can change an attitude easily. With one day of rest and one more day to do homework, a student can have time to avoid a jam-packed schedule for a day.
