Recommended: Use of drones in the war on terror
Drones are known for their many uses. These range from United States (US) surveillance to target surveillance to terrorist surveillance to communications, but the most largely debated use of drones is for warfare. Drones are used to automate and assist in the bombing process; they allow for a pilot to operate the aircraft with a remote control rather than being in the plane. The advantages of this are endless. Drones should be acceptable to use in warfare. Using drones will drastically reduce the aerial deductions from the military budget. They are significantly cheaper to use: “Drone strikes are cheaper than engaging in ground or manned aerial combat” (“Drones” np). The cheaper engagement costs allow for more advanced tactics, as the US …show more content…
Because drone pilots have a much lower risk than regular pilots, citizens that do not wish to risk their lives because they need to take care of their families now have taken an interest in the military. The United States Air Force alone “has increased the number of combat air patrols it can fly by over 600 percent over the past six years; indeed at any time there are at least 36 American armed UAVs over Afghanistan and Iraq” (Cole np). This could potentially allow for shorter battles which could lead to shorter wars or even the prevention of wars. Some of the jobs make video game enthusiasts more likely to find a job they love: “Using joysticks that resemble video-game controls, the reachback operators sit next to intelligence officers and watch a live feed from the drone’s camera on large flat-screen monitors” (“Drones” np). These people most likely already have the hand-eye coordination needed to operate a pilot remotely; therefore, the military could be further extended into a new field where pilots are trained using highly-advanced video game simulations rather than more strenuous physical training. Not only does this open the military to new people, this allows for the military to be more efficient. This efficiency could decrease the time it takes to accomplish a mission as well as decrease the numbers of ground casualties during the
One of the benefits of the Drone is preserving U.S. life. Drones can now replace surveillance missions inside enemy territory without risking the pilots capture and death. Drones are able to slip across borders without risking lives of pilots. They can linger in foreign countries and scout potential threats for a long period of time. They can then decide when to strike the target with minimal civilian casualties. (E-IR) Drones are also able to strike a target with better targeting strategies due to the pilot being removed from the cockpit. (E-IR) Besides the capability for a drone to just hunt down a ...
Military drones do have purposes other than being a weapon; the devices can be used to deliver medical aid and other humanitarian supplies. Military drones can aid in investigation of IHL/LOAC violations, search and rescue operations, reconnaissance and surveillance. Through transparency, over sight and consequences for those who decide to go against established proce-dure, The United States can create via customary law the manner these military drones will be used and still adhere to IHL/LOAC. The question, are military drones legal depends on what their mission is, how they are equipped and whom you ask.
Prejudice has pitted people against each other since the beginning of time. Throughout history, wars have begun and catastrophes have occurred because people harbor blind hatred. Sometimes, catastrophes and wars coincide. A tragic calamity, which all Americans know as the bombing of Pearl Harbor, initiated the United States' participation in the Second World War. The horrific bombing was the spotlight of 1942, which introduced Asian American prejudice that is still seen today.
Drones are cheaper and more effective than putting boots on the ground. According to Brooking.edu, “Over 50 senior leaders of al Qaeda and the Taliban who are not easily replaced…” have been killed by drone strikes. Another 3,250 al Qaeda, Taliban, and Jihadist operatives have also been killed by drone strikes. They are also worthy to be used for the reason that they are cheaper than manned aircraft attacks and U.S. military attacks. U.S. manned aircraft attacks cost $16,900 per hour to operate while drones cost about $3,679 per hour to operate. You might think that's a lot of money, but it cost $2.1 million per year for each soldier deployed in Afghanistan.
“The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him” (G.K. Chesterton). A soldier is a soldier no matter what. If they fight behind a screen, on the front line, or from a controller as long as they’re protecting this country, the people in it, and the people fighting for it they are honorable. Some think that because one does their fighting from a remote control drone means that they have no understanding of war, and in some ways that is true, but they are still taking someone’s life when they choose to press that button just like the solders on the front line takes someone’s life when they pull the trigger. Both people are fighting the same fight: they love the country they are defending the people in it they just do it from different standpoints. Drones
In movies, aliens are always seen and monsters shooting innocent people and taking over their land. Since 2001 this has become reality, but the alien ships have turned into military drones shooting down civilians, and the monster turn into the country in control of these machines. Drones are unmanned aircraft which may be armed for hazardous missions that endangers many lives; this has impacted our military in many ways. The usage of drones was the results of the attacks on the world trade center of Sep 11. 2001. The United States has used drones to kill terrorists in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, among countries. This has ended many innocents’ lives and has provoked more issues than have solved. Drones should be removed from our military services. America would be safer without drones; they create more enemies than they destroy. Drones have also caused numerous civilians casualties, which violates international laws. Not to mention that this
The drone debate section of ProCon.org provides information that states that the U.S. military allocated $5 billion to drones in the 2012 budget, this makes up a meer 1% of the total budget. In comparison, the F-35 strike program, only one of the manned strike vehicle programs, cost the U.S. over $9 billion (“Should the United States”). These statistics could be due simply to the military choosing to invest more time and money into the manned strike programs, or more likely due to the cost of each drone and operation of that drone being significantly less than that of a manned aircraft. The cost to operate one manned aircraft on a mission for an hour can exceed $160,000 while the per-hour cost of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) will most likely not exceed $5,000. These estimates would lead to drones subsequently being .03% of the cost of traditional options and these conventional options being roughly 33 times more expensive than the UAVs (“Should the United States”). Drones also provide an option for the military to eliminate threats without being as invasive of the foreign country as other options
Three-thousand deaths have resulted in drone attacks and only 1.5 percent of these deaths were “high profile” personnel. Out of these deaths about 20 percent were either civilian or children. This statistic only account for the known drone attacks (Galliott, Jai, and Bradley Strawser). When drones were first invented its intensions were mainly for surveillance. Over the years they have been modified and upgraded to perform tasks that can even match manned aerial vehicles which leads to the first argument for drones. With the use of drones it limits the amount of soldiers in dangerous situations. Drones are controlled by a pilot that sits in a safe command room with a high resolution feed of the area around the drone. The pilots that control the drones use a joystick to control the drone’s main abilities. Many investigations have been placed on drone operators and the environment surrounding them and the investigators state that the control over the drones simulate a video game. Since the operation of drone simulates a video game it is said that it takes away our emotional connection of the horrific side of warfare. If emotions were to be taken out of warfare taking a life of another person would be inhumane and unethical.
Drones would reduce the amount of U.S military casualties by a significant percentage. “The Atlantic” a political periodical that provided a commentary on Drones and wrote this “Ground combat almost always kills more civilians than drone strikes do. When you consider the alternatives, you are led, as Obama was, to the logic of the drone.” This is a true statement although its hard to believe.
The United States has developed an extensive drone infrastructure focused primarily on counterterrorism, opening a new era of armed conflict. The use of armed unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, in military operations has been under global scrutiny ever since the United States sanctioned CIA operations to utilize armed UAVs for targeted killings. The idea of drone warfare was first put in action in late 2001, early 2002, after the 9/11 attacks. Since that time, the United States has been carrying out CIA-directed drone strikes as a form of counterterrorism. However, under the Obama Administration drone warfare has become the centerpiece of the U.S. counterterrorism strategy, operating in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Libya, and Yemen.
One of the latest and most controversial topics that has risen over the past five to ten years is whether or not drones should be used as a means of war, surveillance, and delivery systems. Common misconceptions usually lead to people’s opposition to the use of drones; which is the reason it is important for people to know the facts about how and why they are used. Wartime capabilities will provide for less casualties and more effective strikes. New delivery and surveillance systems in Africa, the United Air Emirates and the United States will cut costs and increase efficiency across the board. Rules and regulations on drones may be difficult to enforce, but will not be impossible to achieve. The use of drones as weapons of war and delivery and surveillance systems should not be dismissed because many people do not realize the real capabilities of drones and how they can be used to better the world through efficient air strikes, faster delivery times, and useful surveillance.
Another name for drones are Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVS). These are “aircraft either controlled by ‘pilots’ from the ground or increasingly, autonomously following a pre-programmed mission” (Cole 4). Even though there are many unique types of drones, but they usually fall under two main categories: ones that are armed and equipped with missiles and bombs and others that are used for surveillance. In the past couple of years the use of drones has increased dramatically. The reason being because “unlike manned aircraft they can stay aloft for many hours and are flown remotely so there is no danger to the flight crew” (Cole 13). There are drones that can actually fly over more than fifty hours. In countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq, the Predator and U.S Reaper are physically there. Cause of the power of technology th...
A couple of people say that drone will increase the number of terrorist, but that will only happen if the army of the United States inhuman, incorrectly, and carelessly. It is true that if a person sees a loved one get murdered, they will want to join the opposing force, but many of them will try to seek peace, so no more people die, or get injured. To avoid the situation where a pilot miss use a drone and hurt people on purpose, they should have some sort of higher rank watching them, or they can different training courses when it comes to using
They build their own drones purely for entertainment. They used them to make a video or compete in a sport called drone racing. Drone racing is a new high-speed competitive sport. Thus having drones ban would result in people to stripped off their hobby. That mean the entire toy category would be wipe out in the market and that could affect the United States’s economy. The conclusion is to make the rules more strict and allow a certain area that allows the use of drones. Drones are getting ban not only prevent the decline of United States power and also stop the transformation in the technology of the United States. Drones create the newest job as well as an opportunity for people. This allows people to have many choices for jobs. For those who study engineering as drones will be more advanced in the future would have an easier time to get the job because they are new and so they need people. There are many jobs about drones that offer quite a sum of money. For example, drone pilots starting salary about fifty dollars an hour and there is no danger at all. Many others people opposed against drones because of what they saw on the news. Drones may have engraved to people mind that they are bloody weapons used to kill people which make people see drones in a different light. That is why people all around the world opposed the use of drones. There is some large model that frighten people because they look like aircraft and nobody know what would they do as they fly over our houses. Unfortunately, there is always an exception for those few people who ignore common sense and do dangerous things like lit the drone on fire and see how long it would fly. However, this cannot apply to anyone because generally people drives them extremely carefully. Drones are lives-saving tool which replaces a person and people still complaining about how dangerous drones could get. There is no bad drone only bad people use a drone for bad
Drones change the way to fight to remote warfare. United States started using drones right away after 9/11 happened. They sent drones to terrorist countries. The use of drone strikes should be used abroad to save the lives of more American and Allied forces while successfully battling terrorism. The United States drones strike program has made a difference.
