Coed sports should be integrated into our communities because they can help both young and old develop respect for the other gender. If sports were coed then many schools would be able to afford more teams and better uniforms because coed sports cost less money. The article “Positive Reasons for Coed Sports” states,“ Some small schools and communities have learned that offering coed teams allows more players to play for a smaller total cost. Coed teams can mean smaller coaching staffs than what would be needed for separate, sexually-segregated teams” (Barr). This could potentially be a lifesaver for schools that are located in shabbier communities. They would be able to have numerous sports teams, but only for a fraction of the price because it would cost less to maintain the teams. If children play coed sports at an early age they will be able to prevent gender stereotypes at an early age before they begin to circulate. In the article “What Are the Benefits of Girls & Boys Playing Sports on the Same Team?” the author states, “Child psychologist Laura E. Berk claims in her book "Child Development" that somewhere between ages 9 and 11 kids begin to develop gender stereotypes. The article states, “Coed sports motivate athletes to compete and train together for the benefit of the team. This encourages an athlete to take pride in her accomplishments and demonstrate confidence in her ability to successfully compete with players who have similar skill levels” (Barr). Most students play sports during their adolescent stage in their lifetime when they begin to go through puberty which makes them very insecure.
