In the world of sports it started off that girls could never play sports and then in 1972 a public law called Title IX came to existence which allowed girls to play sports but not with boys. Today the question is asked should girls play on boys’ sports teams? One would think that girls should not play with boys on a sports team because boys are just naturally taller and stronger than women and they would dominate the girls in a fully contact sport. Another may think that if a girl is truly capable to play on an all boys’ sports team, then she should not be denied the opportunity to try out for an all boys’ team. Some other people may believe that sports at younger ages should remain co-ed because boys and girls body types are still similar, but once boys and girls are in high school sports should separate based on gender. Females and Males are equal but not in physical stature, having a girl on an all boys team will negatively change the dynamics/flow of a game, having the best girl player on an all boy’s team will hurt the girls’ sports teams. So sports should strictly stay separated between males and females.
Females can be strong but they have to work at it much harder than males because males are just naturally stronger. This is because, “Men are 50 percent stronger than women in brute strength” (drjamesdobson.org). Men are stronger than women because the sex hormone testosterone, is found in high levels in men which gives them a head start in building muscle, “The sex hormone has anabolic effects, meaning it promotes muscle development. Secreted by the pituitary gland, testosterone binds to skeletal fiber cells and stimulates the growth of proteins, the building blocks of meaty muscles” [source: Roundy](science.how...

...thletes but males and females should stay separated when it comes to sports. This controversial problem is dead and society is ignoring this issue by keeping sports separate between genders and this should stay this way.

Taking a measure of strength as a function of some other criteria would be defined as relative strength. Typically, males are stronger than females, they have 50% more upper body and 30% more lower body strength. However, relative testing’s show no difference between genders (Kenney et al., 2012).
When athletes of opposite gender play sports together there is a greater opportunity for bonding to occur between the two genders (Cohen 228). This is turn, can strengthen a player’s social development, as stated in “Investigating Coed Sport’s Ability to Encourage Inclusion and Equality.” Too, this can benefit athletes later in their career when they become professional athletes and have to do interviews that are conducted by the opposite gender. Because of them previously bonding with the different sex in sports, they will be more comfortable and better prepared for it. It can also benefit them if they do not have a career in sports later in life. No matter where you work you are most likely going to have to work with someone of the opposite sex. If you play coed sports you will be better prepared with how to deal with the opposite gender and know their tendencies. From researching middle school students, Kelly Osborne figured out that what most young athletes enjoy most about coed sports is the chance to “interact with the opposite gender.” Athletes look forward to being able to play with other athletes of the other gender. Not to mention, it creates greater camaraderie between the team (Cohen 228). Coed sports create many companionships between males and
Unintentionally, a lot of us have been boxed into institutions that promote gender inequality. Even though this was more prominent decades ago, we still see how prevalent it is in today’s world. According to the authors of the book, Gender: Ideas, Interactions, Institutions, Lisa Wade and Myra Marx Ferree define gendered institutions as “the one in which gender is used as an organizing principle” (Wade and Ferree, 167). A great example of such a gendered institution is the sports industry. Specifically in this industry, we see how men and women are separated and often differently valued into social spaces or activities and in return often unequal consequences. This paper will discuss the stigma of sports, how gender is used to separate athletes, and also what we can learn from sports at Iowa State.
The term “gender gap” is often referred to a disproportionate of equality between male and female. By nature men are physically stronger than women, nevertheless, because men hold such a visible strength to the world that they are taken as the prevailing and powerful gender. The physical strength that men possess to lead society to create a patriarchal system that only man can make decisions and have authority...
Today more than any other time period, equality has become a hot topic for discussion. One of the major topic is, should women be allowed to compete with men in sports on the same or opposing teams. Due to a lot of differences in physical characteristics, sporting interest, and economic considerations; it’s not a good idea to bring teams consisting of both genders together. To begin with, we have to question whether there’s even a want from the general public for girls being allowed to play on boys’ sports teams. Very few athletes in sports are barely even bothered about the fact women can’t play on male sport teams. If there’s no true desire to combine the teams, it only makes sense to not try a force unneeded change.
Gender in sports has been a controversial issue ever since sports were invented. In the early years, sports were played only by the men, and the women were to sit on the sidelines and watch. This was another area of life exemplifying the sexism of people in which women were not allowed to do something that men could. However, over the last century in particular, things have begun to change.
Deborah Brake explained arguments for and against segregated sports teams. Some of the concepts brought up for having gender integrated sports teams is that having separate sports teams would send out a message that women are less than men. Integrated sports teams accommodate both genders abilities. Giving women an equal opportunity to play against men will change the norm of women in sports and this can be seen as better because both genders will truly be viewed as equals. Women will also have more opportunities to play various sports that are only exclusive to men such as football and
In summary, Despite opponents argue, fans want to see thunderous dunks and incredible athleticism over the lesser abilities of females, male competitions is more intense and there is more at risk, and male driven associations produce more revenue than female driven associations. It is apparent that male and females are built differently therefore they have different abilities, females go through the same types of events and often have more on the line, and female athletics aren 't given the same recognition or praise. Then, maybe one day female will receive the same amount of pay as their male counterparts. As, Vera Nazarian once implied, “A woman is human. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man. Likewise, she is never less. Equality is a given. A woman is human.”
“The Politics of Muscle” by Gloria Steinem is an essay arguing the difference in strength between men and women. Steinem starts her essay by stating how she grew up in a generation where women didn’t participate in a lot, if any, sport activities. She goes on to say that she believes this is the reason why women of her generation believe that it’s not what the female body does, but how it looks. Steinem feels that women always seemed to be owned in some degree as the means of reproduction. She believes that women are made to feel ashamed of their strength and that “only when women rebel against patriarchal standards does female muscle become more accepted.” (pg 372)
...ough they perceive that both gender should be permitted to play all sports, they still feel that selected ones are not appropriate. For instance, football was checked as a sport for male gender and is not appropriate for girls to involve themselves in, and aerobics was taken as a female gender sport inappropriate for males and should not participate in.
Although many people think we should have girls and boys playing on the same team all together. In my opinion I think it's a bad idea and that there will be more injuries on the field than most the time bc most girls in high school aren't as tough as the guys so this is my reasoning.
However, in most states boys are not granted the same rights because there has been no such "historical limitation" on their participation in sports, according to the Women's Sports Foundation. While this may seem to defy the motivating spirit behind laws like Title IX, many view it as an "acceptable" situation. Boys who do participate in sports such as synchronized swimming, cheerleading and even field hockey often face an even greater challenge than girls attempting the same feat in a "men's" sport.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Some people believe that girls and boys shouldn't be allowed to play the same sport because girls are weak or guys will look too feminine. Students shouldn't be held back from what they want to do because others opinions. I believe boys and girls should play the same sport.
Some people will argue that the physical differences between men and women are substantial enough to dismiss women from infantry. In the Army, women do not have to score as high as the men on the physical fitness test, further backing the argument about physical strength. Women, on average, have less upper-body strength, less muscle mass, and a lighter skeleton, which could lead to an increased risk of structural injury (Owens). If women were assigned to the front lines, they may not be capable of doing the physically demanding jobs such as handling Howitzer munitions (Owens). There is a feeling of a double standard because men are held to higher physical fitness requirements than women.
Ann, 2007, pg. 57), however this is not true. This mentality causes males to resent the female athletes, thus rendering it even more difficult for them to succeed. Without a shift in gender ideology, females will continue to face adversity, regardless of the amount of change that has occurred over the last 30 years. There does not need to be equality between the genders within sports, however equity must be seen, with the perception of the abilities that female athletes possess not being compared to that of males. This would aid males to not feel as threatened by females participating in sports and physical
