Belsomra (suvorexant) is an FDA-approved, prescription medication intended for people who have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, such as those who are diagnosed with insomnia. In 2015 the company, Merck & Co., created a television ad promoting their medication. In the ad there are animals being portrayed as sleep and wake. Wake, the dog, is constantly waking up Sleep, the cat, throughout the night which causes the owner to wake up as well. This is a representation of what happens when someone is having trouble sleeping. The narrator in the ad describes belsomra as a drug that can “turn down wake messages, by targeting and inhibiting the action of orexin” (i Spot, 2015). Orexin is a wake neurotransmitter in the sleep and wake pathways of the brain. If the orexin transmitter is not turned down like it should be or it is being interrupted, insomnia may occur. The commercial claims belsomra is the “only” sleep drug that works by targeting and inhibiting orexin neurotransmitters (i Spot, 2015). How was it proven that belsomra is the only sleep aid to work this way? …show more content…
H. Yang wrote an article titled Suvorexant: First Global Approval for an R&D Insight report. The basis of the article is about how suvorexant is the first drug in it’s class to be approved for insomnia. Belsomra as advertised, is the company’s trade name for suvorexant, also known as MK4305. It comes in pill form and is recommended to be taken orally. The dosage is 10mg taken once per night, 30 minutes prior to going to bed. Dosage may be increased to 15mg or 20mg if users find the 10mg dose to be tolerant but ineffective. It should not be taken unless the patient is able to receive seven hours of uninterrupted sleep (Yang, 2014, p.
However, the advertisement has enough invented ethos for an unfamiliar audience. It implies that if you've got a cold and cannot get to sleep, then this is a good product to take, because this product will alleviate the symptoms of a cold. Medicine of any kind has ethos of its own, simply because people trust medicines to work to cure ...

Sleep is the body’s way of restoration, improving memory, and preparing one for the upcoming day’s chaos. However, in recent years it has become a school norm for a person to be up at all hours of the night despite having to wake up early in the morning. So, seeing an advertisement promoting a sleep aid by a trusted company such as Vicks would strike interest of someone who struggles to fall asleep but not necessarily sell the product. Selling the product depends on the way that the company displays its product using color or background details, arrangement of featured people, wording and product placement.

Many people in the United States, view poor sleep to be an individual's choice instead of an affliction. The number of sleep disorders that are present today is over the top. Sleepiness, whether due to sleep apnea, heavy snoring, idiopathic hypersomnolence, narcolepsy or insomnia from any number of sleep-related disorders, threatens millions of Americans' health and economic security (1). Perhaps somewhat most concerning of these disorders are those that allow sleep without having any control over when it happens-idiopathic hypersomnolence and narcolepsy. The two are closely related in that both cause individuals to fall asleep without such control, yet narcolepsy occurs without any dreaming during naps (2). For years, narcoleptic people have been falling asleep in corners, concerned, as they have given numerous attempts to try to stay focused and awake. But besides the excessive fatigue that people experience, there surely must be more that can be associated with causing such sleepiness among people at an uncontrolled level. There might especially not be a reason involving the I-function of the brain, as people are not aware of when necessarily they will fall into their deep sleep.
