Most of us know that there are some human foods our pets shouldn't eat. Keeping our cats away from alcohol, for example, is a no-brainer. But did you know that onion powder can cause anemia in cats and dogs? Because of their different metabolisms, many common foods that are safe for human consumption are not safe for your cat. Reactions can range from upset stomachs to severe illness or death.
To help keep your kitty safe you need to know which foods to avoid. The following list spotlights eight common foods your cat should never eat:
Baby Food
It's hard to imagine that a food that's safe enough for a baby's tender tummy would hurt our fur-kids. But what makes baby food so dangerous for cats is that it might contain onion powder (see below)

Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical compound that humans can eat safely. But cats and dogs metabolize theobromine more slowly; as a result, even small amounts of the compound can lead to theobromine poisoning, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excitability, panting, abnormal heart rate, tremors, seizures - and even death. Theobromine poisoning is treatable if caught early enough. But to be safe, keep chocolate away from your kitty.

Not only does anemia make your kitty pale and lethargic, it can be a life threatening illness.
Spinach
The jury's still out on whether or not spinach is bad for cats, but scientists do know that spinach leaves contain a small amount of calcium oxalates (a chemical compound that makes needle-shaped crystals), which is a major component in kidney stones. If your cat eats enough spinach, it could lead to crystals in her urine. Cats with a history of urinary problems such as infections, crystaluria and kidney disease, should definitely avoid eating spinach.
Unripe Tomato
Everyone knows that tomatoes are good for humans. But did you know that they can be toxic to cats? Tomatoes are a member of the deadly nightshade plant family and contain a poisonous alkaloid called, solanine. Solanine is toxic to humans too. But you have to eat it in large amounts for it to hurt you. That's why you shouldn't eat green potatoes - a potato that has gone green has higher levels of solanine inside it. And it can make you sick, causing a bevy of symptoms that range from nausea, diarrhea and vomiting to hallucinations, paralysis and in the worst cases, death. Unlike humans, however, only a small amount of solanine can hurt your cat. According to FelineFuture.com, "traces of Solanin, like those found in just a 100g of cherry tomatoes, can be
These treats are made from dehydrated lamb lung, which sounds nasty to me, but the dogs love it. Because they're so rich, they're better used as an occasional treat or for training purposes. Good for both cats and dogs.
Anemia is a disease that is commonly seen in veterinary medicine. This disease can be described as having low amounts of red blood cells and a reduced amount of hemoglobin in the circulating blood, which reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. It develops from loss, destruction or lack of production of red blood cells. Anemia is usually a secondary disease caused by another disease or medical condition. There are three different types of anemia; regenerative, non-regenerative and relative.
I don't think our school lunch is healthy because it has fat and too much sodium. Although it is good it is fattening it is the reason for much of the obesity in the U.S. Many kids have no other option to eat the unhealthy school lunches or they will be hungry.
Accidental ingestion after touching or ingesting anything that has come into contact with a cat's feces that contain Toxoplasma
Many dry dog food products contain artificial preservatives. Considering all the pros and cons of artificial preservatives can scare some people a bit because it is a well-known fact that common preservatives include ethoxyquin, butylated hydorxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). These chemicals will prevent fats found in dog food from becoming sour and extend the shelf life, however, large amounts of these can cause serious health problems. Most pet owners should try to avoid high levels of artificial preservatives in dry dog food for their pet’s health and well-being. Adding natural substances such as vitamins E, vitamin C and plant extracts to dry dog food can also prevent fats from becoming rancid. Unfortunately, natural preservatives are not as effective as artificial preservatives because natural preservatives are effective for shorter periods of time compared to artificial preservatives, which means it can also shorten the shelf life of the product. When looking at the ingredient list on the bag of food, remember the description “all natural” can almost mean anything. Ethoxyquin, BHT, and/or BHA in the ingredient list means that the food is not naturally preserved. Canned food is also another way to avoid artificial preservatives because the can...
Cats infected with the Feline Leukemia Virus are found worldwide, although the rates vary depending on age group and the general lifestyle of the cats. The virus is transmitted in a number of ways. It is commonly spread through body fluids, such as blood or saliva, or other bodily excrements. An infected cat eating or drinking with an uninfected cat could cause transmission, as well as an infected cat sharing a litter box with an uninfected cat. It can also be spread through grooming. Another common means of infection is a bite, especially in cats living primarily outside. The virus can also be spread in utero or through a kitten’s consumption of milk if the mother is infected. Feline Leukemia Virus is more common in kittens and young cats than in any other age group. A healthy cat that is in adulthood stand a much smaller chance of contracting the virus, especially if the cat has already been vaccination against ...
I have always thought it never mattered what kind of food animals got. Once I read Cat and Dog Food Differences Explained, I learned many things about the nutrients and foods that cats and dogs need. According to the article, cats will not eat food off the floor. A cat will paw and sniff at the food on the floor before rejecting it (Viegas). Dr. Allan Paul states, cats have higher protein needs than dogs do. He also states, cats use protein for an energy source. Cat food contains more than 30 percent of protein. They need extra protein to satisfy their requirements for energy. Vitamin A is a key ingredient for a cat to have in their food. Watson says, meat is the only source cats can get their acids. Cats like food that has a texture to it (Viegas). From what I gathered, dogs are very different when it comes to food. Dogs will eat off the floor and right out of your hand. Dr. Allan Paul says dog food contains 20 to 25 percent of protein. Dogs can get their acids two ways. They can get their source through meats and vegetable oil. Watson states, dogs can convert beta-carotene for their vitamin A
In cats there are many different types of diseases that can harm them greatly. One of the scariest, and comon, in humans and our animal counter parts, is cancer. Cancer can be painful, terrifying, and and too many cases, deadly.

Feline panleukopenia is a very contagious and serious viral disease caused by a parvovirus. It should be kept in mind that almost all cats will be exposed to this at some point in their life. This is because the virus is so highly resistant. It can live up to a year in the environment and can survive freezing as well as disenfectants. (MarvistaVet, 2011). Feline panleukopenia is commonly called feline distemper although there is no relation between the two. (Delbert Carlson & James M. Giffin, 2008) This disease will affect and kill the cells of the cat’s bone marrow, intestinal tract, and the fetus of a pregnant cat. (VetInfo, 2012) This is such a serious disease with such high mortality rates because of how quick acting the virus is. Within in just 24 hours, the virus has already made its way into the bloodstream of the cat, and in 48 hours it’s already infecting the body’s tissues. This means that in a time as short as two to four days, white blood cells are beginning to be lysed and are declining. (VetInfo, 2012)
The modern world is a hazardous place for house cats. It is important to realize the many dangers that lay in wait beyond the front door. While a healthy indoor cat has an average lifespan of 12-15 (and even as many as 25!) years, the average lifespan of an indoor/outdoor cat is reduced by 2-3 years simply by going outside (Indoor and Outdoor Cat Life Expectancy Differences). A cat who goes outdoors also has a minefield of risks to manage every day, most of them created by humans. Feral and pet dogs are a major risk to outdoor cats, and, although it is said that cats will avoid busy roads, there is no evidence to support this, and car strikes take down countless cats each year. In 1993, the newspaper “Animal News” published findings that as many as 5.4 million cats were hit by cars that year. While this does include feral, stray, and otherwise unowned cats, it is important to realize the dangers that cars present to your cat. Another danger that presents itself is humans themselves. While it may be...
Full grown cat’s diet is more affordable. A cat can eat constant dry, hard food because its teeth and jaw are strong enough. The food required for a cat is supposed to be low in calories to prevent obesity. A cat’s diet also requires a constant supply of water to prevent dehydration. The body absorbs the water awfully fast. Cats are carnivores. The full grown cat hunts down and eats any pests in the house that bothers them. If an outside/inside, while outside they may provide their own food supply; replacing the hard, dry food with birds or
Being a carnivorous predator, the cat needs some sort of play outlet besides its usual habitat or the owner may become the object of play predatory aggression.
Every day there are millions of cats around the world that contract a broad range of illnesses. When an owner’s feline companion becomes ill, it is good for them to recognize any clinical signs that may be present and know whether their cat had the potential to come into contact with an unknown animal if an interaction was not seen. Information like this will help the veterinarian to make a proper diagnosis and create a treatment plan for the animal. Some illnesses can be potentially fatal and can possibly be spread to other pets in the household, so it is important to make sure the cat receives medical attention when it starts to show signs of illness. One disease that any cat owner should be aware of is Feline leukemia (FeLV).
Food is a major part of everyone’s everyday life. It’s hard to imagine life without the chocolate cake on your fingers or a carne asada taco in your mouth. Enjoying delicious desserts and fast food seem extremely magnificent to eat and spend money buying them. Although, there have been many controversies in the United States on how it’s the largest country with the most obesity regarding children, which affects their health, many people are still going throughout their day snacking. Many people in America are having full course meals with thousands of calories in one sitting not knowing the short term or long term side effects that are going to take a huge toll on their lives. Food is delicious, but it comes with a secret behind the savoriness/sweetness.
