I am lying in bed, and I hear a loud non-stop beeping noise. It is seven am because my alarm is loudly reminding me. It’s Monday morning and the beginning of a new school week for my children. I roll out of bed and begin my routine of assisting my children to get ready for school. As I drive them to school, I hear their conversations of excitement. Then my eldest son Sergio interrupts everyone and reminds us it is time to pray. As we pray together, we ask God to keep the children safe at school. Safety in school has become a big issue of concern. Schools are no longer as safe as they used to be in the past. As a parent, school safety concerns me. I want to drop off my children at school and now they will remain safe. However, in our society, our schools are filled with some undisciplined students that bring violence to the schools. Children are taught discipline by their parents or guardians. The Child Development Institute stated, “Parents who have discipline problems do not plan. It is a sad time in American history when one can easily recount recent school shootings in their own area. This ease stems from a sharp increase in the number of firearms brought into elementary and middle schools across the country, with an intense focus on the issue beginning after the shooting of 20 children from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Most school shooters are male, white, and often upper middle class. They are also more, often than not, under some type of mental stress that is causing them to create this type of violence in our communities. In fact, many school shooters are never suspected of doing any harm to their peers and teachers until it is much too late.
Raising a child is a challenging life task that is given over to individuals all over the world without an instruction manual. People must learn by experience how to nurture, care for, and provide for miniature versions of themselves for almost two decades in most cultures! The word discipline is defined as imparting knowledge and skill, to teach. Discipline is used by parents to teach their children the correct way to behave. They need to be given constant discipline to be taught right and wrong and it can involve rewards and punishments to teach self control and increase desirable behaviors and decrease undesirable behaviour. Though the purpose of child discipline is to develop desirable behaviour and social habits, the ultimate goal is to create sound judgement and morals so that the child develops and maintains self disciple throughout the rest of their lives.
Texas has passed a new piece of legislation that has now given the students, teachers and other officials to carry a loaded gun onto and around their college campus. The case for this gun carry legislation was that if the students, teachers and other officials were able to have these gun than maybe the issue of school shootings would almost evaporate in some areas. This no doubt sounds like one of the better arguments for guns on campus, seeing as how much of an epidemic we have with school shootings. However, congress seemed to have disregarded an issue on how this could also harm the campus more than it could help. In Australia there has never been a school shooting. “A school shooting is a form of mass shooting involving a gun attack on an educational institution, such as a school or university”(Wikipedia). According to the United States Secret Service, a school shooting is where the school is purposely planned and selected as the location for the attack. The issue of school administrators and teachers carrying guns has become an actual controversial topic in our society today. School shootings similar to the ones in Sandy Hook and Florida, has also become common in our society. Arming teachers is only one of the solutions that states are considering and some have already started the process of proposing this to become a law. This issue needs to be thoroughly researched and all aspects need to be considered and evaluated. However, what changes to security measures and policies will be put in place, if teachers are required to be armed will training be provided, and more importantly, will the parents and the teachers have a say in the new policies, will their voices be heard.
In recent years, tragedies have been visited upon schools across the country. From Kentucky to Oregon to Colorado, the notion of schools as safe havens has been shattered by the sound of gunfire. These acts are not limited to any geographic regions or family backgrounds, nor do they have a single catalyst. When constructed well there is room for growth and progress, as well as penalties for non-compliance. Without good classroom management, learning is inefficient and the teacher becomes stressed. A stressed teacher leads to unruly students, which is where discipline comes into play.
