The discussion below is about the personality type ESTJ which is extraversion, sensing, thinking, and judging. The most basic description of this type is that they are an outgoing realist who deals with factual data to make decisions. This type is not always understanding of other types who are different and is also not shy about letting people know their thoughts on any particular subject. This personality type is found throughout many organizations in leadership roles. In my particular profession the United States Navy we are largely this type. Having multiple ESTJ’s in an organization makes for an interesting discussion. A large part of my job in the Navy is talking to Sailors in my command; I am tasked with keeping the pulse of the organization. Being an extravert is very helpful in this part of my job. According to the website for personality page extraverts can be gregarious and direct. This description helps me in the biggest part of my job which is the enforcement of regulations. It is a little easier for me to engage directly with Sailors about issues they may be having with this trait than someone who is a natural introvert. I will say that this part of me has changed and I am now less of an extravert than I was when I was younger because I talk to people all day long. When I get home, I prefer not to have a full social schedule anymore as much as I used to. I noticed this about myself this year as after a speaking engagement with hundreds of people and a dinner, the next day I preferred to stay at home vice going out to dinner with friends. What has worked for me in bridging this gap is to discuss with people that I empathize with them that this is a difficult decision, but it must be made and the reasons why I made it. This seems to be a nice bridge and sort of soften the blow if the decision is a tough call or controversial. Thinking and feeling have also caused me personal conflict because my initial job in the military was being a trauma medic assigned to the Marine Corps. This job requires quick decisions to be made that are lifesaving or ending. Usually later when the situation has calmed down the emotion of the situation hits you and the feeling portion of human nature comes out. When I did that job it was always an interesting dichotomy. The bases of this paper will be based on the results that I had obtained when I took the Myers-Briggs personality test. The results that I had obtained was that I was determined to be an ENFJ. I will go into depth about letter and how each represents that a specific aspect of my personality. The results that I had received were not what I had expected, but the more I read about the trait the more I realized how it suited me. I will also talk about the information that I had found useful from the book, Type Talk at Work: How the 16 Personalities Types Determine Your Success on the Job by Otto Kroeger, which gave me insight on how to interact with other personality types especially in the work environment. The information that I absorbed from the personality test and from the book will go into use in my personal and work life so that both environments will be cohesive and peaceful.

He then goes on to describe INTJs as self confident, balanced, intelligent, independent, and competent (Kroeger, 2002). Upon taking the Myers Briggs personality test on the human metrics website I was not surprised that I received the conclusion of an ENTJ or “the natural born leader”. The role of an ENTJ is that you conduct yourself in a manner that is very logical and rational (“Personality”). There has yet to be any determining evidence defines the characteristics of extraversion. The experimenters in this particular experiment have hypothesized that the facets of extraversion are somehow linked by reward sensitivity. This hypothesis was also tested against a model in which they are linked by sociability. There has been much work on this topic in the past, beginning with the works of Jung and James in the early 20th century—to the work of Watson and Clark in 1997. And even after a century of study, they are still unable to truly define the characteristics of the extraversion dimension of personality. In the many attempts to define extraversion, Watson and Clark have defined six basic facets of the personality trait. These are: venturesome, affiliation, positive affectivity, energy, ascendance, and ambition. Researchers Depue and Collins, in 1999, also offered a more succinct depiction of the characteristics of extraversion, this only having three basic parts. The first being affiliation, the enjoyment and value of close interpersonal bonds, also being warm and affectionate. The second, agency, being socially dominant, enjoying leadership roles, being assertive and exhibitionistic, and having a sense of potency in accomplishing goals. After taking the personality test, I learned my general personality type is “The Consul” (ESFJ-A). Individual traits of my personality type are more extroverted than introverted, more observant than intuitive, more feeling than thinking, more judging than prospecting, and more assertive than turbulent.
