Dreaming. Pursuing. Enjoying. These are all words describing what I envision my life to be in the present and future. I can dream of my future today, then I can pursue my goals and ambitions tomorrow. In order for my goals and ambitions to be successful, I need to make sure that I am enjoying what I am doing. When I was younger, I developed many ambitions, but, as I started to become older, reality started to sink in. From the time a child enters preschool, teachers begin asking a common question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” That dreaded query has always haunted me, mostly because the way it was redundantly asked put a ton of pressure on me and my peers. The question was like a rusty nail being hammered into our head’s by society. I continuously had the cliché answers of becoming a doctor, teacher, or a police officer, but with serious reservations. After years of not having a clue, I started to think about what I like to do after the stresses of work and school were gone at the end of the day.
When people are younger everyone always ask what do you want to be when you are older? Of course when it is children everyone is filled with wonder about their answer whether it’s a model, astronaut, race car driver, etc. Now that I’m older it’s expected for me to know exactly what to do with my life and how to do it. When we were little, we thought the word “Career” was not a big deal, but as a senior in high school, the word has become our reality as we start to finish our last semester. The question we’ve been asked all these years is, what do you want to be when you grow up? But our answer is simple: we don’t want to grow up. As an innocent kid it seemed like the time would never come, but it has. It’s time to get serious and really ponder this question.
It can be hard to know what one wants to do when they’re older. There are certain things to consider, like a level of interest in the topic, how much information one would already know, how much that will be needed to know, and to take in if this is what one would want to do in their future life. I know for me when I have to think about future plans it can really worry me. I tend to get stressed out, scared, and wanting to avoid the topic entirely, even though in the back of my mind I know I need to stop running away with what I need to currently take care of. It’s a lot like in the tragedy play of Macbeth. There was so much pressure to always be something more. If a right hand man of the king wasn’t good enough, then he had to be king himself.
Throughout my life, I had continually believed that once I graduated college, I would engage in an action filled career. I wanted to be a police officer, a firefighter or even an undercover FBI agent. I had planned on studying criminal justice, and I took numerous high school classes based on it. Nevertheless, my plan transformed the summer between my junior and senior years. It was my grandma that influenced me to transform my criminal justice plan into a nursing plan. For most of my life, I may not have acknowledged exactly what I wanted to do when I grew up, but I did know that I sought to help people.
As a senior I am obviously aware that my journey through school is coming to an end. At this point in my life, I have a slight idea about what I want to do in the future; however, I still don’t know if that’s where I want to go and I won’t ever know until I learn more about it. Some people may see my lack of permanent direction as an indication of someone who is lost. It's unbelievable how each year, since the beginning of high school, my perfectly laid plans for myself have unavoidably deteriorated. When I entered my freshman year, I had aspirations of being a doctor (something I had wanted to be since I was a child). Now, here I am entering my senior year in high school without any idea of what I want to do. Now seems to be the time to start taking life seriously and making responsible, educated choices.

Doing that you love sounds like a dream but is sometimes not what is best. In the article A Life beyond ‘Do What You Love’, Gordon Marino states,”Our desires should not be the ultimate arbiters of our vacation. Sometimes we should do what we hate, or what most needs doing, and do it as best we can.” Throughout the article Marino tells about his experiences and conversations he has had with his students about what they want to do after high school. As an occupational counselor, Marino explains to his student advisees that sometimes they have to put what they want to do to the side and do something that is not only good for themselves but for others around them. He continues to prove his point to the student advisees by using his professional techniques, telling stories, asking questions, and giving reasons for his argument.
Too often, we become too caught up in our everyday mundane routines that we forget, or perhaps, never truly see what our purpose is. We forget what truly motivates us to live and what truly drives us to reach a greater goal. Oscar Wilde once said, “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” As I look at the people around me, I see ones who furnish their goals with intents of gaining wealth, success, or recognition. However, are they truly happy? How many times have you actually sat down and asked yourself, “why do I do what I do?”.
As I am preparing for a new chapter in my life, I have put a lot thought in about what I want out of life and what to look forward to as I get older. In order for one to achieve anything, they need to set goals to reach for. I have a handful of goals for my future, short term and long term, that I will actively work towards in my college years and beyond. In my time at UW Eau Claire, I plan to be involved and engaged in student activities on campus. Being active will help me meet new people, build a better resume, and have fun at college. In this purpose paper, I will discuss in detail my personal, career, and educational goals using my skills and talents to explain why they are important to me. My personal purpose statement is to be a productive member of my work team with talents of responsiveness and being strategic while learning as much as I can to improve upon myself and my team. My talents are being quick to respond to any situation and using diverse strategies to get something done as well as my passion for learning new things. I have a lot of confidence in succeeding in both my small and large goals, especially after learning how much my personality traits are inclined with my current major and my career goals. The personality tests I have taken confirmed to me that I have found a career path that I truly enjoy and that I know I will be able to succeed in. After struggling the first time I attended college, in major I was not suited for, I failed. Now that I have taken on a major that I deeply care about, the work load does not seem as overwhelming. It proves that when you care about something, it is much easier to continue and succeed. Now that I not only have a strong desire to accomplish my goals, but also a strong action plan to achieve them, I feel that there is nothing holding me back from achieving even the biggest goals I have for myself.
