Reflective Writing Standards Writing is a big part of your College Success class. I’m not your English teacher, so I won’t grade your writings as carefully as a composition instructor might, but I will grade the quality of your reflection and ideas related to the course material. It is a good idea to get to know my expectations for your writing assignments so that you can aim for the grade that you want to earn in this class. Some people will find reflective writing comes easily, because they are in the habit of consciously reflecting. However, most of us have to learn how to be deliberately reflective, and that is a big part of what you will learn in this class. Here are some steps to reflective thinking that might help you to practice, so that reflective writing is more natural. First, revisit the experience or material you are being asked to reflect on and consider your thoughts and opinions. Examine your assumptions, beliefs, reactions, “gut” feelings, and attitudes. Next, try to step outside of those feelings and analyze how you arrived at your conclusions. Imagine you have to explain your thoughts to a friend, and try to clarify what you would say. The trick to reflective writing is to balance personal and informative writing so that your reader knows how and why you arrive at conclusions. Some good habits to embrace as part of your reflective writing throughout this quarter are: explain your thought processes clearly and concisely, arrange your writing logically so that your reader can follow your thinking, show rather than tell the reader how you worked through an issue or idea, and use lots of relatable examples. Avoid writing that assumes that your reader knows anything about you. Remind yourself that none of the conclusions you reach in your life are obvious to anyone but you.
