The most satisfying class I have taken is AP Psychology. For a major part in my life, I always knew that I was destined to participate in a career that involved the understanding of the mind. Since then, I have been fascinated with psychology, taking time out to watch ted talks about new theories or spending time looking for books and articles about the human mind. When I was aware that I could take AP Psychology during high school, I took the class with no hesitation. Even though I am more than fascinated with psychology, the reason why AP Psychology has been a satisfying class all stands on the teacher. My AP Psychology teacher used real life applications with all of the information presented in the textbook. She structured the class in such
a way that it was impossible to not see why psychology is so important in life. From her life stories to her life warnings, she motivated me to truly look at the psychology of the human mind beyond the textbook.
To complete this experiment, we used Sprague Dawley rats that were obtained from a breeding company entitled Envigo. We used a total of twelve rats. The rats used in this experiment are all 2.5 years old. The rats were each pair-housed in a temperature controlled room at approximately 22 C. All rats are maintained on a 12:12 hour light dark cycle. For the sake of the experiment, we water restricted the rats as a way to contribute to their motivational state.
The origins of Industrial/Organizational Psychology (I/O) can be traced back to 1921 with the formation of the Association of Consulting Psychologist (ACP), a branch off from the American Psychological Association (APA). In 1945 I/O psychology was formally recognized as Division 14 underneath the APA. (Koppes, 1996). Although, founded a little over a half century ago the discipline is still relatively new compared to other disciplines within the APA. The articles to be discussed cover the origination issues of licensure as well as appropriation of licensure for I/O psychologists. The lack of consistency as well as appropriate and adequate requirements for obtaining a professional license as an I/O psychologist has resulted in many ramifications that ultimately threaten the profession.
Social psychology is a scientific study that studies how people think, feel, and how they behave under the influence of other people (Aronson, Wilson & Akert, 2013, p. 2). Thinking about what social influence really means, we tend to think of a person who tries to persuade another person to acting a certain way. It can be a form of peer pressure, like taking that first puff of a cigarette, or it can be conforming to popular societal views, such as obeying the law of the land. Fiction is a great way to learn about social psychological perspectives. Watching popular theatrical films is the perfect way to learn because it illustrates the application of many perceptions within the subject of social psychology.
In Introduction to Psychology taught by Dr. Mary Kay Streit, we were leaning information form our book Introduction to Psychology Eighth Edition? The class study forms chapters 1 to 20 slipping a few in the middle. The class had a fast past and was full of useful information. At first I had a very hard time keeping up. The first two tests I barely passed. The teacher was always willing to help with what she could. Me myself had other problems going in to the class. I am a learning disabled student who was not getting as much helps as I need. The classes that were being taken by me were college level and were all time consuming. Dr. Kay was very reasonable and did what she could she also give us different ways the study for the test so that we could bring are grades up. In the next paragraphs to follow I will be telling you and just a few topics we covered in the course.
Although learning about the concepts of psychology through reading material is very informative, movies provide more elaborate visual depictions of these principles. Films allow us to better connect the psychological concepts to real-life situations. In specifically analyzing the 1997 film, As Good As it Gets, several psychological principles are illustrated throughout the movie. Three of these concepts are: obsessive-compulsive disorder, the frustration-aggression principle, and the mere-exposure effect. Several scenes in the film provided illustrations of each of these principles.
The psychological theory is how they suspect people to have negatively been affected as children or something that causes them to go over into insanity. It is the scientific study of human behavior and mental process which attempt to uncover why we do what we do. There are many other different types of the psychological theory. Some theories have fallen out of favor, while others remain widely accepted, but all have contributed tremendously to our understanding of human thought and behavior. By learning more about these theories, you can gain a deeper and richer understanding of psychology's past, present and future.
In the world of cinema, there’s almost always a discussion regarding what scenes would be suitable for the grasping imagination of any audience, young or old. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film, Psycho, sparked a plug for the movie industry as it was the first movie of its kind to display such graphic scenes of sex and violence to a worldwide audience.
Chapter 6 of Wright, Basco, and Thase (2006) presents behavioral methods to work with patients with depression. This chapter points out the importance of behavioral method application in supporting patients to complete tasks, solve problems, and particularly improving energy. Different methods are applicable to patients with depression, such as behavioral activation, activity scheduling, graded task assignments, behavioral rehearsal, and problem solving.
The first Psychology class (PSY 101) I took was my freshman year at Central Washington University in 2010. I got a C out of that class, and decided that Psychology overall wasn’t for me at the time. It wasn’t until I gave Psychology 2nd chance in my junior year of college. After taking a couple Psych courses I decided to pursue a major. When I began my Psych major, my goal was to end the major with at least a 3.0 GPA. I also had a goal of getting more in depth in the psychological processes of the mind. Cognitive Psychology with Professor Ralph Greenwald helped with that. In his class I learned that the mind and the brain are two different concepts (I used to think when people referred to the mind or the brain, that it was the same thing).
Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
I was very excited to discover this Introduction to Counseling and Human Development Services class. I was instantly drawn to the many benefits that this class had to offer. From helping me with my future career, learning the best kind therapy I need, to becoming a better friend to everyone I care about. Through this class I was able to identify the theory I would want my own therapist to use to guide his/her practice as the Psychodynamic theory and I can use that this knowledge to help me find the best therapist when I seek a counseling psychology professional.
Without a doubt my favorite class this semester was AP Psychology. As someone who has been mesmerized by the brain, its functions, and human behavior, this class kept me constantly engaged and interested. Walking into class, I knew that every day I would learn something new. This class allowed me to gain a better understanding of people around me, and taught me patience when dealing with numerous different types of people. Also, this class has provided me with a basic understanding of why people do different things, and allowed me to grow and become more open to new things. I went into the class with lots of questions, and have found each of them answered in more depth than I thought about them originally. Prior to taking psychology, I knew
In the beginning of the semester, we as a class learned about the 8 Habits of Mind. We learned about curiosity, openness, engagement, creativity, persistence, responsibility, flexibility, and metacognition. They were all good habits but many of them, I lacked in all honesty. I already came equipped with some of them but they needed a refresher, which this course did give. How I choose to use them while growing as a student is up to me now.
PSYC321-Social Psychology taught me about the ways in which people are influenced by others, how people make decisions, inferences we make about others’ attitudes and personalities, and influence of situational and variables on behavior. I learned that people behave the way that they do for so many reasons. Behaviors are caused more by the social situation than they are by the characteristics of the individuals. One of the concepts that I recall is Lewin’s equation which indicates that the behavior of a person at any given time depends on both the characteristics of the person and the influence of the social situation. One aspect I found striking was the role of advice giving in counseling. Prior to this class, I knew that counselors did not typically give opinions or advice to lead a client in a certain direction. What I did not know was the entire reasoning behind this. A counselor might avoid giving advice so that a client learns to make his/her own decisions, does not become dependent on the counselor, and to ensure that a client will not later blame the counselor if the counselor’s advice did not turn out well. In this context, I have a better appreciation and understanding of why therapists refrain from telling the client what to do.
