I was very excited to discover this Introduction to Counseling and Human Development Services class. I was instantly drawn to the many benefits that this class had to offer. From helping me with my future career, learning the best kind therapy I need, to becoming a better friend to everyone I care about. Through this class I was able to identify the theory I would want my own therapist to use to guide his/her practice as the Psychodynamic theory and I can use that this knowledge to help me find the best therapist when I seek a counseling psychology professional.

At this point in my life I would most likely go into order to relieve stress from school. In the future, I know I would go routinely to get psychological evaluations. A doctor can help me learn about myself and help me stay mentality stable. This can be helpful to me if I don’t have anyone else to talk to. My therapist needs to be a kind, open-minded person. It is also very important that they make me feel like I’m on their level even if they may be more educated. If they can achieve this then I will be more comfortable with

It is hard to pinpoint the exact moment I knew I wanted to become a psychologist because as previously stated, the journey is complex and dates back to my childhood. When I was four years old, my parents adopted my 14 year old cousin after both her parents passed away. Her father died of AIDS while in
When I began my studies at the University of Northern Iowa, I had an interest in the field of psychology, but I was not yet sure that I wanted to pursue a career in that area. The classes that I consequently took and the professors that taught them solidified my desire to receive a degree in psychology.

Counseling Psychology is a specialty within the professional psychology that maintains a focus on facilitating personal and interpersonal function across the life span. Those who are Counseling Psychology focuses on the clients emotional, social vocational, education health-related, developmental, and organizational concerns.
Chapters two, five and six focused mainly on the helping relationship and the core values, empathy, and probing and summarizing as helpful skills. These three chapters seemed to flow into each other nicely.

I was really nervous about doing this first practice recording. While I knew how I wanted to start the conversation, I was stressed out about the unknown that comes along with these sessions. I am constantly listening to my friends talk, but how I had to respond for the counseling session was very different than what I am typically used to. I usually give my friends my opinions and advice on how I would handle the situation. It was hard for me to just sit back and let my classmate talk. I wanted to respond to many of her statements, but I had to take a step back and really just listen. In these types of counseling sessions my thoughts and opinions are not important. Rather, the focus should only be on the person you are counseling.

In order to be an effective counselor, one must remember to keep the client(s) in mind. The goal is to assist the client(s) in living the best life possible for that particular person or persons. With that being said, one cannot forget that they have their own set of morals, values, ideas, and the like. Social workers have to keep in mind that there will be cases that are complex and a favorable outcome may not be possible. In the instance that I am confronted with an issue that conflicts with my religious beliefs, I plan on assisting the client as much as possible by adhering the National Association of Social Work Code of Ethics, NASW standards for the Practice of Clinical Social Work, and discussing my concerns with my supervisor while
PSYC321-Social Psychology taught me about the ways in which people are influenced by others, how people make decisions, inferences we make about others’ attitudes and personalities, and influence of situational and variables on behavior. I learned that people behave the way that they do for so many reasons. Behaviors are caused more by the social situation than they are by the characteristics of the individuals. One of the concepts that I recall is Lewin’s equation which indicates that the behavior of a person at any given time depends on both the characteristics of the person and the influence of the social situation. Some of the things we do can also be attributed to cultural influences and differences that exist between societies. I found
The psychotherapy was a sham. The psychologist was a straight laced, sanctimonious, pillar of virtue. He never judged. He didn’t have to. His looks of disapproval and gasps of shock where all the ammunition that was needed to shoot me down further.
One aspect I found striking was the role of advice giving in counseling. Prior to this class, I knew that counselors did not typically give opinions or advice to lead a client in a certain direction. What I did not know was the entire reasoning behind this. A counselor might avoid giving advice so that a client learns to make his/her own decisions, does not become dependent on the counselor, and to ensure that a client will not later blame the counselor if the counselor’s advice did not turn out well. In this context, I have a better appreciation and understanding of why therapists refrain from telling the client what to do.
