Project 2 builds on the personality assessment in Project 1 conducted at the beginning of the course and is divided into three steps. Step 1 provides details on me as a person, how I work with others and my ability to work within organizations. These details are framed within the subheadings of personality, values and attitudes, motivation, decision making, ability to work with others and my ability to work within organizations as scored from a Prentice Hall’s self-assessment conducted on 14 February 2015. The Big Five Personality Model is an “impressive body of research that theorizes five basic dimensions in the human personality: openness to experience, emotional stability, agreeableness and conscientiousness and extraversion” (Robbins and Judge 2009, 108). I scored high, an average of 13 points, in each of the categories except for extroversion which I scored low. My basic personality is strongly characterized by openness to experience, emotional stability, agreeableness and conscientiousness and introversion. I scored low, 5 points, on the extroversion scale. Robbins and Judge define motivation as the “processes that account for an individual’s intensity, direction, and persistence” (2009, 175). I scored high in self-efficacy theory which means that I have a strong belief that I am able to complete tasks and in difficult situations, I work harder (Robbins and Judge 2009, 188). What motivates me; however, is not work itself, but rather the people that I work with. According to the IPIP-NEO personality assessment I am average when it comes to extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness but, rank low on the neuroticism and openness to experience categories. When I read the title ‘openness’ I assumed that it would mean friendly or something along the lines of that. After I read the description of what openness truly means I was a bit offended at first because I believed the score was telling me that I was not a smart person. As I read deeper into the meaning that the assessment gave I realized that “down to earth, practical, and conservative” (Johnson) were not insults but adjectives that I would have chosen for myself, minus the conservative part. Conservative is not a word that I would ever use for my way of thinking and that one section of openness to experience did not correlate with me. The Big Five Personality Test provided an interesting account of my personality. Although the majority of the results were accurate, I was surprised by two of the outcomes. According to this test, I am a closed-minded, unmethodical, social butterfly that is well-mannered towards others and composed under pressure (John, 2009). First, the results were completely accurate as I am extremely extroverted. I never meet a stranger, and I carry on conversations with anyone. From the custodian, to the cashier, to a random person on the street, it gives me a great sense of fulfillment to engage in dialogue with others from all walks of life. The goal of the personality assessments was to provide a better understanding of all of the individuals. Prior research indicated that certain personality types are best matched with certain tasks. However, it is challenging to meet both the technical and personal criteria to create the “perfect” employee. Utility of assessment. Why are these types of personality assessments useful? Did you find the results useful? Why or why not?
After taking the Jung Typology test I have summarized each of the individual personality types that corresponded to the ISTJ personality type that I was given. The validity of them along with any disagreements of them I have are included. In this paper I have a discussion of how these personality types are used to my advantage at work and how I have learned to work with my weaknesses. I believe that this type of personality test, along with learning how to use the information, is something every transformative leader must have in order to be successful.
I found the results of my self-assessments to be a very insightful and accurate description of myself. The results of the learning styles test and the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II are very valuable for examining my personality traits and learning style and making improvements as needed.
Base on the Big 5 Test, I have a low level of Extroversion. It describe me as very well as quiet, and a private person. Personality is massive part of an individual’s identity. Our personalities dictate our patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. An individual’s personality exposes them to predispositions and habits that influence their actions and lives. Early on, personality assessments consisted of physical features ranging from head shape and facial characteristics to body type. In today’s world, personality assessments are mainly based around traits. Traits are simply descriptions of one’s habitual patterns of behavior, thought and emotion. The most popular personality assessment is the Five-Factor Model, also known as The Big Five. This model allows us to describe people based on the five main traits/dimensions. After taking the Big Five Personality Test I’ve concluded that it is a fairly accurate assessment of my personality. 1) On Openness to Experience/Intellect I ranked at the 53 percentile, with the description that I don’t typically seek out new experiences. I would agree with this assessment. While I am somewhat creative, I am no artist. It takes me more time to do something creative than something analytical, but I do still like to be creative on occasion.
Self assessment is a process in which you examine yourself in attempt to discover and learn more about yourself. Your likes, dislikes, behaviors, attitudes and habits can be found during this process. You can use the discoveries to your advantage by accepting or changing strengths and weaknesses. I plan on using this course to enhance my personal skills to become a better student and find success in earning my Bachelor of Arts degree at Ashford University in Social Science. Self Assessment is the first step in my successful future.
Personality tests tell a person a lot about why a person is who they have become. I believe that these test if taken truthfully can identify deficiencies that individuals can work on to benefit not only themselves but others in the organizations that they work in. Some models state that it is in human nature and chemicals that decided how a person acts but I believe it is based on life experiences and a personality can change as long as a person knows the deficiencies and works to change them.
Trait approach covers the big five personality traits: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. These five traits have been identified as the most identifiable personality traits, even across cultures and societies. According to McCrae, Costa, and Busch’s (1986) study on personality system comprehensiveness, the big five personality model included the five traits most identified with by individuals asked to describe themselves and others. I found this segment of the class especially intriguing as it helped me not only learn so much about myself, but also take a deeper look into the personality of my family, peers, and even strangers. I am also more conscious of how I self-monitor my personality traits. For example, I am very much so an introverted person but at times I try to be extroverted based off the environment. In highly social environments, I consciously smile and try to talk to people because I want to be perceived in a favorable light, not actually because I feel the need to be sociable. In other words, I don’t want to be perceived as odd. I believe I developed this form of self-monitoring because when I am introverted at social events people will constantly ask me if I’m ok since I’m quiet, which makes me uncomfortable as they make me the focus. Being the center of attention makes me anxious, and therefore to prevent that I have developed being a fake-extrovert to avoid it. This exemplified how I apply self-monitoring to my everyday life. Personality is the expression of a person’s traits according to ones feelings, mentality and behavior. It involves understanding individuals’ traits such as withdrawal and willpower and how various parts of an individual link together to form personality. Personality expresses itself from within an individual and is comparatively regular throughout in an individual’s life. Different people have different personalities dependent on factors such as environment and genetic composition. Our personality is dependent on the success or failure of our development in the eight stages of life. This is proposed by Erik Erikson. Success in the development stages lead to virtues while the failure leads to malignancies.
