The Grand Canyon, it’s truly is grand. The animals, the plant life, and the canyon’s history is something my father and I have been interested in for a long time. My dad, Erik, shows me plant specimens and fossils of animals i’ve never seen before. He once told me there was a type of vulture that are so close to extinction there are only 20 left alive in the world. We visited Arizona to see the Grand Canyon once dad got enough money to go on a roadtrip. I’m so excited to see my friends there, too. I brought so much snacks, maybe too much, and my backpack is kind of heavy for the hiking trip, but I’ll live through it.
I met with my friends once Erik was finally at the Grand Canyon, my legs felt numb when I hopped out of the car, they were

going to have a big surprise once we tour the place. My three friends, Malyssa, Kendrick, and Nick haven’t seen me in almost a year. But we were all here, together, and about to go explore the second largest canyon in the world. I hugged my friends and my dad called me. “Joen, you go have fun, but stay on the trails. I don’t want any coyotes or cougars eating your faces off!” He laughed, and Nick followed on with his joke with an unnecessary comeback. “Like anybody would eat off Kendrick’s face.” Nick bellowed. We all soon got ourselves together and checked in with one of our tourists, making sure we were all set to go on the trail. Once we left, I felt like my legs were going to snap in half even after a half an hour. It started to get dark, my legs were aching, and I was kind of letting the trio stay ahead of me so I could see what was on the ground with their flashlights since I didn’t have one. My backpack began to make my shoulders ache, and I pulled out a few bags of chips and pretzel snacks so I could eat away the weight off of my sore back. I was sweating like a waterfall, and I decided to sit down for a minute beside the trail without telling my friends. I splashed cool water on my head and took a breath for a few moments. And after that, it was completely dark, I couldn’t see anything. My friends surely wouldn’t have forgotten me that easily, but they were messing around, talking loudly and laughing at Nick’s horrible puns.
I didn’t feel worried, though, I could run up the trail and find them, it was easy.
I laid back on the prickly ground and watched the dark blue sky turn darker, and the first few stars popped up from the sky. I thought I saw Mars for a few moments. I stayed quiet once my heartbeat steadied itself and my breaths slowed. But I heard something crawling through the thistles, not a bug, and not something small like a fox. I heard it rasping the dusty air around its mouth, and I stood still, not making one move. Maybe Erik wasn’t joking about it, after all…
A cougar, large and beastly, prowled through the thorny bushes, breathing heavily as its huge paws plopped against the ground. I turned my head and slowly sat up, trying to be as quiet as possible, it heard me almost immediately and started speeding up towards me. I felt like screaming bloody murder when it chased me, and I ran up the trail. I was being so stupid, but running from it was smarter than fainting on the ground after it already sees me. My legs never felt more sore, and my shoulders weren’t doing me any good. The cougar flicked its tail and growled, almost as if it were making fun of me. I would,
too. The trail split into two parts, one heading closer to the canyon, and the other seeming to head back, but back to safety was so far, and I would never reach it, the way that the cougar was running. The weight of my backpack felt like 50 pounds, now, so I slipped it off of my arms and dropped it. I panted and ran to the trail heading closer to the canyon, I think my friends went there. The cougar seemed to slow down, uneasy about me, but still seeming interested. I thought it would just pounce and start eating me right away, the way it looked so large, it could be taller than me if it stood on its hind legs. Soon, I heard my friends calling my name. “Joen, Joen!” Malyssa seemed to be terrified, having her voice cracking and stuttering as I saw her flashlight illuminating the thorns along the trail. I yelled at them and they saw me, shouting my name once more and almost blinding me with their lights. We grouped together and the trio made sure I was okay, and I was, besides almost being killed by a giant cat. I looked behind myself and saw that the cougar was far back, out of light’s reach. It yowled a few more times out of annoyment and wandered off with his flicking tail. My heart was still thumping, and I looked back at my friends, they seemed worried, but angry at the same time. Kendrick frowned, gesturing at me. “What were you doing? My number one fear was being eaten alive by a wild animal, and you almost made it come true!” I winced and apologized to all of them for what I did, feeling sorry for the rest of the way as we silently retreated back to safety. I was 10 already, and we definitely got in trouble, staying outside for that long. Erik was so angry, but he didn’t need to do any grounding. My phone was in my backpack, and so was my expensive camera gear, so he made me wait until tomorrow to get it back, but I still couldn’t use my phone. I wasn’t angry at him, either, just myself for being so dumb on the trail. I would never do it again, and I think my new fear is Kenrick’s, now. That cougar was huge and dangerous, and so was almost every other wild animal in Arizona. But I was still fascinated about it, that cougars became my new favorite animal, and my dad suggested I do some research about them. I did, and became even more attached to those wild cats, I started to tell my friends interesting facts about them, and letting them become aware of the different types of cougars that are becoming endangered. Going on that trail was definitely an experience i’ve learned some important lessons about, and will always be careful about, too.
Zig-zag, back and forth, down, down, down, Jonathon, Dad, and I went into a mysterious new world. Now that I have gone into this hot, dry canyon surrounded by monstrous hoodoos, I have seen what it is really like to leave the small town of Seymour, and emerge into the greatness of this world. I have now seen several other National Parks on one of the most renowned places on earth for mysterious creations, the Colorado Plateau. Of all the beautiful places on it, even the Grand Canyon, I have found my favorite one. Bryce Canyon National Park. I thought it was amazing, because it was the most diverse to anything I have ever seen before. We hiked down into it and I felt like I was surrounded by skyscrapers. We trekked around a little, but we didn’t
I have been to a place that has lots of interesting snow and others. It is Lake Tahoe. It is a place that I will never get bored of that it has a lot of snow! Mostly you could do anything with snow. But most of all, beating your older brother up in a snowball fight. I really loved when each time I went down the big mountain. It was really amazing. I was also really happy of building snowmen and building snow forts that I never even knew I can build. It was amazing for all of what could be crafted with snow. The fantastic trip has come to the start!
As my father and I finally fit the statue of the little Virgin Mary in the back of the car, it was time to get on the road. I could already taste the guavas from my great grandfather’s ranch. Feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin. The smell of my aunt’s cooking. Hearing the excitement of my great grandmother’s voice. I wanted to be there already, be in the beautiful country of Mexico. My thoughts wandered as we left my house. How much welcome, love, and the sadness of leaving was going to happen. It was too soon to find out.
The Grand Canyon has a lot of different features and is an exciting place that holds a lot of secretes and mysteries that scientists have been trying to figure out since the Grand Canyon was formed. It is millions of years old, over 277 miles wide, 18 miles wide, and defies many normal Geography features that are true in every other situation. Many theories have been presented that seek to explain the formation of the Grand Canyon. The first theory is that the Grand Canyon has a lot of Erosional Scarp Face’s, that have come together over the years, which is one theory that has been presented. Scientists have also tried to see if the Colorado River cutting into the canyon caused the Grand Canyon.
Out of all the trips I have taken, Cancun was definitely the best. It was 2013 and I was in fifth grade. I had known about the trip for weeks and I was so amped up for the plane ride, for the hotel, and especially the ocean. I was in science and the teacher was getting mad because I was distracting all the kids by jittering all over the place. Finally I heard my name called over the intercom and I leaped for joy and ran out of the classroom. From school we drove to the Iowa Airport, got our tickets and loaded onto the plane. Our first plane took us to Chicago, Illinois where we boarded a plane , at the O’Hare International Airport, departing for Cancun,Mexico. The second plane was very lengthy, I tried to sleep but I didn’t actually fall asleep

I love camping and spending time outside, but this summer I had a completely new experience when I visited the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Before leaving, I had very little knowledge of the Boundary Waters. After getting advice from friends and purchasing some special equipment, I realized that camping there was going to be much more complicated than I had thought.
My youth pastor pulled out of our church parking lot at three am in the morning loaded down with a bus full of twenty four teenagers including me. We were off at last head to Colorado Spring Colorado, little did I know, our bus was going to fall apart this very day.
A couple of years ago during one of those, on a whim after spending a few days in Arches National Park, my wife and I detoured to the snowy, icy south rim of the Grand Canyon. We journeyed toward it from the east side but got turned back at the National Parks’ gate; the road was snowed under from there on up. After retracing our steps, we traveled down to Flagstaff and spent the night, driving in my four by four truck up to the South Rim the next day. It was an eerie experience to stand on the edge of the South Rim and see only cloud; fog shrouded the canyon’s great gap, leaving us with visual doubts that anything was really there. Defeated, we hit the Visitor’s Center and gathered information so we could go back sometime in the spring or fall with weather more to our liking.
My Mom and Dad have already gone to the grand canyon and they said that it was a breathtaking experience. I can’t wait to go! We are getting a tour of the grand canyon and we will go back to the hotel after dinner. Our tour guide was very insightful and gave us a lot of information regarding the canyon. He told us that “The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is a mile-deep canyon (1.6 km) that bisects the park” (Grand Info Page). The tour took all day, and the tour guide took us all around the canyon and he told us that this is and all day trip because “Even though the average distance across the canyon is only 10 miles/ 16 km, it takes 5 hours to drive the 215 miles / 346 km between the park's South Rim Village and the North Rim Village” (Grand Info Page). The trip was truly an amazing experience for me. At the end of the day, my family and I ate in the park at a place called Yavapai Lodge Restaurant. It was fantastic. I had the rotisserie half chicken. When we got back to the hotel, I fell right to sleep because that was a long day for
Visit the grand canyon. There are few things that are as spectacular as the Grand Canyon, I wish to arrive just a couple of minutes before sunrise and witness the natural spectacular scenery.

One of the most enjoyable things in life are road trips, particularly to the Colorado mountains. Getting to spend time with your family and friends, while being in a beautiful place, is irreplaceable. The fifteen-hour road trip may feel never-ending, but gazing at the mountains from afar makes life’s problems seem a little smaller and causes worries to become a thing of the past. Coming in contact with nature, untouched, is a surreal experience. My family trip to the Colorado mountains last summer was inspiring.
I have not had many meaningful moments with nature, even though I have many encounters with it. But the encounter that is the most prevalent in my mind is my vacation at Willow Lake, Minnesota. Here I had encounters with nature on the water, out bike riding, and watching a storm come in the distance.
