My Time in the Boundary Waters
I love camping and spending time outside, but this summer I had a completely new experience when I visited the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Before leaving, I had very little knowledge of the Boundary Waters. After getting advice from friends and purchasing some special equipment, I realized that camping there was going to be much more complicated than I had thought.
I was dropped off at my good friend Siri’s house, where I met the rest of the people going on the trip. We had a group of eight, which included three dads (each with one of their kids), plus me and another guy named Lindsay. He was oldest person in the group, and had lots of experience backpacking. Lindsay and I would be paired-up in one of the canoes

once we got on the water. One of the dads, Larry, drove us up there in his old, red Land Rover. He had a big, green canoe tied on top of the truck, and it caused wind to make a weird sound - like a breezy whistle – as it blew in and around the canoe during our drive. After about 5 hours of driving and whistling down the road, we reached Ely, Minnesota and spent the night in a bunk house. When we woke up the next morning, we started the final preparations for our departure into the Boundary Waters. It was a chilly morning, and rain started to fall just as we were pushing our canoes off from the shore for the first time. I wore a blue rain suit that was not fashionable in any way, but certainly kept me dry. We arrived at our first portage after only about 15 minutes of paddling. Patiently, we took turns getting out of our canoes and unloading all of our gear. Once we made it safely on land, we hauled our gear on a hiking path that fur-trading voyagers used long ago. Sometimes we would have to go back more than once to receive more gear. We had to portage one more time that day before choosing a campsite on the third lake we saw. Our campsite was beautiful, with a nice rocky shoreline and plenty of room to put up all of our tents.
We could hear a waterfall in the distance, with the sound of crashing water continuing around the clock. There were different types of moss everywhere, and it seemed to be covering almost everything. When we did some climbing, it was nice to have the moss there as a soft, spongy cushion for our hands. Later that first day, we decided to go swimming. We canoed into a little bay on the Canadian side of the lake, and I was the first to jump into the water. My body started to shiver instantly from in the cold, clear water, but after adjusting to it for some time I ended up feeling refreshed. The following day we went on a long hike to a spot with a beautiful view of the Canadian border. Lindsay pointed out a maroon, barnacle-like growth on a rock along the way. He explained that the fur-traders used to eat it, so I tried a piece. It had no flavor, but had the same texture as a potato chip. After a couple hours of difficult hiking, we reached the overlook and found a spectacular view of distant Canada. The orange sun was just beginning to set over the lakes, with trees covering the land like a blanket. It was the most beautiful view I have ever seen within Minnesota.
I came home smelling of pine trees and campfires. I made so many memories and had so many new experiences in just a brief visit. It was unlike any camping experience I had been through before. In a way, it was life changing. I’m looking forward to exploring more of the Boundary Waters with others, and I hope to give them the same kind of experience I
had.
Have you ever looked off a gigantic cliff? Now imagine traveling 30 miles per hour on a bike with curvy roads with enormous cliffs on your side with no rails. This is exactly what I did with my family when we went to Colorado. From the hotel we drove to a bike tour place to take us to the summit of Pikes Peak. After we arrived at the building we saw pictures of how massive the cliffs were, but what terrified me was the fact they had no side rails. This observation was thrilling as well as terrifying. It was an odd mix of emotions, but I loved the adrenaline rush it gave me. My dad whispered to me, “ This will be absolutely horrifying”.
When I stepped out of the hot, airless plane into the bright, dazzling sunlight beaming down across the burning concreate, I felt excited and nervous. Holding my beach bag in my hand and slipping my Ray Ban sunglasses on with my other, I flip-flopped down the airspace. Overhead I heard the screams of gulls and the chatter of the small fluffy birds. I suddenly realized I had arrived to Hawaii. This trip was such an unforgettable vacation for me because I got to witness the beauty of nature that Hawaii has to offer.
Every person has an American Dream they want to pursue, achieve and live. Many people write down goals for themselves in order to get to their dream. Those never ending goals can range from academic to personal. As of today, I am living my dream. My American Dream is to become a nurse, travel to many places, have a family, and get more involved with God.
Over sixty days have passed since I left with the others from my homeland on the Mayflower, sailing along the Atlantic passageway in search of new beginnings. The journey at sea was treacherous, but not deathly, though our morale was quite shaken from the storms. The ship’s main hull was breached, but thankfully the ship remained intact for the rest of the course with just a few temporary repairs. Originally, we were headed to dock in Virginia with the other settlers, but the gales and squalls of the sea have steered our path elsewhere north amidst the land. Just shortly after we landed shore, a team was dispatched to explore where they named the area Plymouth Rock, just west of Cape Cod Bay. And now, the others and I have stepped foot on a sandy beach in this part of the New World, ready to form a fresh start.
A significant moment in her life was the time she moved from Hawaii to Colorado. It was not a smooth transition between two completely different places. Nevertheless, she would manage to fall in love with Colorado just as much as her Hawaiian home.
It was time to go, it was 5am on a Saturday morning and I needed to get my pack to our church for loading. We got there a little late like usual, but it was okay, because you can’t leave the ScoutMaster(My dad) behind. We got on the road around 7am. I was in the car with two of my friends, My dad, and one of our assistant ScoutMaster. It took around 11 hours to get to camp. We took only two stops, one time to eat some sandwiches, and another time to pick up some food for the night. We got there around 6pm, and we had to unload all our supplies, pick tents, and find out who we were sleeping next to. The camp did not start till monday so we had a extra day to set up, explore the camp, and have some fun.
“People who are passing through, on their way to the Lakes of Muskoka and the northern bush, may notice that around here the bountiful landscape thins and flattens, worn elbows of rock appear in the diminishing fields and the deep, harmonious woodlots of elm and maple give way to a denser, less hospitable scrub-forest of birch and poplar, spruce and pine — where in the heat of the afternoon the pointed trees at the end of the road turn blue, transparent, retreating into the distance like a company of ghosts.” (Munro
After a few hours of exploring the boat was departing from the island back over to the city. I handed the guy my ticket and took my seat. after waiting ten minutes for everyone to load and take there seats the boat went tut tut and started it way back to the dock. Thank god the waves were a lot smaller then they were on the way there. It was a very fun time on the Island i would love to go back again. Maybe one day we could go together, and adventure the beautiful island
How we got there was really fun we drove in my sister's jeep Me and my sister drive back to oklahoma fast as light to my state tournament my mom and sister flew back later that week .
My heart was pounding as I boarded my flight leaving the Bangkok International Airport. A flight attendant in a grey dress with a red bow draped over her shoulder announced; “Welcome aboard flight AA350 to the United States.” My journey began that day.
My best friend Terry and I being the only girls. Now one thing to know about canoe trips is you must have everything you need in your backpack that you take with you. By the time this story takes place we are about five days into our camping trip. That’s when things get interesting.
We then would race each other back to the campsite where Nancy had breakfast waiting for us. Me, Alicia, Nancy, and her little brother David would all gather around the picnic table for breakfast and engulf our food, jubilant to go to the beach and for our camping trip to officially begin.
To my surprise the snow was covering the road like a blanket as well as the beautiful backdrop of great mountains, pine trees, rivers, and lakes. I remember it was a cold Tuesday morning when I finally saw the large sign that was reassuring me that I was close to my destination. As I entered
Ever been on a camping trip? If the answer is yes, many other Americans have too. In 2011, nearly 43 million went camping in our country; this is a 3 million increase from the year before (The Coleman Company 6). Camping has been a popular pastime for the American people for many decades, this is mainly due to the fact that camping is fairly inexpensive and allows memories to be made that will last a lifetime. Preparing for a camping trip can be a daunting task, but if an individual has the right knowledge and has put enough time into making plans, the trip will be a good time for everyone involved. Before going on a camping trip, many things must be accounted for, one must know where they will set up camp, the supplies that are needed, and
I awoke to the sun piercing through the screen of my tent while stretching my arms out wide to nudge my friend Alicia to wake up. “Finally!” I said to Alicia, the countdown is over. As I unzip the screen door and we climb out of our tent, I’m embraced with the aroma of campfire burritos that Alicia’s mom Nancy was preparing for us on her humungous skillet. While we wait for our breakfast to be finished, me and Alicia, as we do every morning, head to the front convenient store for our morning french vanilla cappuccino. On our walk back to the campsite we always take a short stroll along the lake shore to admire the incandescent sun as it shines over the gleaming dark blue water. This has become a tradition that we do every
