If there is anything that I have learned over the past 18 years, it's that, with patience and determination, I can do almost anything that I set my mind to. I fought to accomplish my goal, and with patience and determination, I made it to where I am today, and where I want to be. Throughout my high school career, I have chosen to run Cross Country. Over the past four years, I've learned so much about running, life, and myself. With time, I became stronger, as an athlete and a person. The races were scary to say the least. Before every race throughout my four years of running, my Coach would say some words of encouragement that wouldn't just make me believe I could do better, but helped me do better. I knew that I was going to run my heart out. It took a lot of time, patience, and determination go get where I am now. Eventually, the terrifying, life-changing day came. My final race day as a LaPorte Slicer. All of my brothers (my teammates) were anxious to start. With my foot right behind the white line, I looked to my brothers and said, "It's some of our last race today, lets run as a pack and kick some butt today." They shook their heads in agreement. Then came silence, the time before a race where everyone was silent, even the spectators, waiting to hear the crack of the starting gun. The gun cracked and off we went. My legs were so used to the motions and aching pain that they did exactly as they were told, without protest. Eventually, the team split up and I was near nobody on my team. Some fell behind while others sprang forward running faster than I did. Halfway through the race, I remembered my coach saying, "Find someone ahead of you, and pass them. After that, do it again, push yourself to run faster and let nobody pass you." I did exactly what he said, feeling like a car in the passing lane; I passed guy after guy. Each one took more time than the last, but I did what I had to
I have always loved sports and the competitiveness that comes along with them. In so doing, I have decided to eventually become either a high school or college coach at some point in my life. Subsequently, I decided to interview the Vilonia High School Cross Country Coach, Coach Sisson. As I walked into her office, I instantly noticed all of the trophies and team photos from all of the past years of coaching. She is also the school nurse so her office has first aid equipment intermingled into the trophies and team pictures. While I set up my notes and questions for the interview on one of the desks in her office, she was finishing up a diagnosis of one of the high school students who felt sick. After her patient left, I quickly started the interview in order to waste no time. She began with how she got involved in coaching. The Vilonia School District expressed their interest to her as being the next cross country coach several years ago. She was widely known for her passion for running and she gratefully accepted the position and has been a coach for numerous years now.
I am now officially in my Senior year of Cross Country , and am close to the end of my season. My first race of this year though was a big accomplishment for me, because I hadn`t been able to run. When I ran that race though it made me just so happy I was able to finish it, I was`nt happy with the time, but there is always time for improvement. I was glad to be racing again and being apart of the team again. I believe that my injuries were a barrier in my way, but they did not stop my sports career.
Sports are not for everyone. I tried a variety of sports throughout my childhood but I was never really athlete material. I am as slow as a turtle and I have little to no hand-eye coordination, but I gave each sport a try. It was truly a shock when I decided to run cross-country since I had no speed whatsoever.
How would it feel to be able to achieve anything that you ever dreamed of? This is possible with the right mindset and an extremely hard working attitude. The keys to this is holding a growth mindset, which aids you in embracing challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, see effort as the path to mastery, learn from criticism, and find lessons and inspiration. Another crucial element for success is grit and what that short word basically determines is your strength of character. Having a growth mindset and using grit can help you achieve whatever goals that’s being attempted.
Running. Running has provided me with so many opportunities. I have met so many new people and learned numerous life lessons. My life would be completely different if I had not had these invaluable experiences.
Coach Jason Harrod went to Gloversville schools so he can relate to my surroundings on a better level than most adults I speak with. Along with going to school in Gloversville, Harrod also played soccer for the school, which is another reason we connect a little better. During the summer workouts, Coach Harrod tends to pull me from the crowd and ensure I’m pushing to do everything to the best of my ability. If he notices anything off, he makes sure my health and mentality is all well. When he does said acts, he boosts my mentality and makes me push more than 100%. I joined my school’s cross country team in the summer. At the beginning we performed pre-season workouts. The training was tough, but my proud personality and the very thought of what I had to gain kept me motivated and helped me push through the pain. I met him when I was a freshman, at that occasion I saw him as my coach and nothing more. Later on, I asked if I could work out with him after practice in the school’s weight room. The start of the 2002 track season found me concerned with how I would perform. After a disastrous bout with mononucleosis ended my freshmen track season, the fear of failure weighed heavily on my mind. I set a goal for myself in order to maintain focus and to push myself like nothing else would. My goal for my sophomore track season was to become a state champion in the 100 meter hurdles. I worked hard everyday at practice and went the extra mile, like running every Sunday, to be just that much closer to reaching my goal. The thought of standing highest on the podium in the center of the field, surrounded by hundreds of spectators, overcame my thoughts of complaining every time we had a hard workout. When I closed my eyes, I pictured myself waiting in anticipation as other competitors names were called out, one by one, until finally, the booming voice announced over the loudspeaker, "...and in first place, your 2002 100 meter hurdle champion, from Hotchkiss, Connie Dawson." It was visions like these that drove me to work harder everyday.
The sun beating down on my face with extreme heat is compared to the surface of the sun or hell, either way, it's hot.
I love to run hurdles, but unfortunately last year, little pulls and strains prevented me from running to my full potential. One Thursday, we had a home track meet against Lake Stevens. For the first time I was in pretty good shape for my race, the 100-meter hurdles. I began jumping up and down partially to stay warm, and partially to let out some of my excitement. By this time, I had butterflies in my stomach and the adrenaline was pumping. The starter asked us to 'Take your sweats off and stand behind your blocks.' 'Runners take your marks.' Hands shaking, I crouched into the starting blocks. The gun was up. 'Set!' 'Bang!' I bolted out of the blocks. I was way ahead of the other girls when suddenly, I realized I didn't have enough speed to carry me over the next hurdle. Gathering all of the strength I could, I grabbed at the air in hopes of guaranteeing clearance. I had just brushed over the wood when my foot hit the ground and my ankle gave out. I fell. I heard a gasp from the crowd and the other racers' feet pounding past me. I got back up. I had never gone over a hurdle with my right leg first, but I did after that fall. Sprinting as fast as I could in between hurdles, I found myself basically bunny hopping over the rest of them. My goal was to cross that finish line and to be able to say that I did the very best that I could, even if I didn't look very graceful along the way. Although it might have seemed like a bad day, I was proud. It was the first time I had ever fallen in a race, and not only did I get back up and keep running, I managed to place second.
Volunteering to me has never been so much of a job that doesn’t pay. It is a way for me to give my time to help a cause, organization, or an event. I don’t volunteer because I need to get hours for school or for a club, I volunteer because I want to give back to my community. I feel a sense of belonging and importance when I volunteer, even if my job isn’t that significant. For the past two years, I have been volunteering at the Chicago Marathon. Even though I know that I play only a small part in such a large event, it gives me satisfaction knowing that I was part of helping the race run. Each year my family and I go to the marathon, whether that’s because one of us is running it or if we are simply there to watch, it has become a tradition
This was the lesson I learnt from my father, an unceasing learner and a person who would never give up no matter how many and how difficult the obstacles may be. Having understood from him that success is a moving target, the years of my life with my family have inculcated in me a desire to achieve perfection.
I replay the moment I reached the finishing line over and over in my head. The crowd cheered for the runners as they frantically shook cowbells to give us the last boost of energy. When I crossed the finished line, I felt a huge sense of relief. I was incredibly relieved that I was finally done with the marathon after being on the road for six long hours. ...e advantage of my strengths. Since I am a better cyclist than runner, I passed two of the competitors in my age division while on the road. On the last transition, I took a deep breath and focused on my goal. There were two people in front of me. Mile by mile I got closer until I was finally able to pass one guy. Eventually, there was one mile left so I had to sprint. Two hundred feet away… one hundred feet away… fifty feet away… I barely passed the other runner. I finished the race in first place! After the race, I met the second place winner who told me he was a professional cyclist from Wimberley, Texas that traveled around the world competing. I was glad to hear this because I got very close to beating him, while being sick at the same time. I will employ this experience as a motivation that I will never make excuses nor give up on something till the very end.
