Our Marriage
Our official journey began on August 2, 1997 in Las Vegas. That was our wedding day and my official entry into married life. Tim and I said, ?I do? in Clark County, Nevada. The clerk declared us 'best friends for life' in a ceremony with just the two of us. That declaration was more profound and welcomed than one any priest could have made.
Our wedding cost a total of seventy-two dollars, this included the license and ceremony. I should also include the cost of what I call 'our wedding planner.' His name was Jake and he was a taxi driver, he charged us fifteen dollars and we tipped him fifteen for his extra duties, it was a special day. When we arrived in Las Vegas from Boulder our car started to over heat from the long drive through the hot desert. We decided to park it at the hotel. We hailed a cab and set off to find a place to get married. We had a deadline; our honeymoon was scheduled to begin the next day. The cab driver drove us past several different chapels giving us details about each one. After a brief survey of chapels we asked him to drop us off at the justice of the peace. The chapels just seemed too cheesy and besides, I had no real affection for Elvis. He dropped us off in front of a large, very official looking building to get the license and he directed us across the street to a small brick office where the ceremonies are held. I had the distinct feeling that he has provided this service a few times before in his career.
I soon found myself waiting in line behind a frail elderly man with a huge smile on his face; he stood next to a young girl, she looked equally happy. The man wore a red velvet jacket and the girl wore a shimmering red dress with spaghetti straps. It was a dress that would...

...ming with life. The smell of the flowers was intense and enlivening. The breeze that was not restricted by car windows, the heat that was not reflected by a rooftop or eradicated by air conditioning, the rain that was not repelled by anything more than my poncho, I was one with all of it. As I biked past, I moo'd as loud as I could at the cows in the fields and felt happy doing it. I even occasionally rode in the van when I was tired.
Today I question my fears before I give into them. The questioning usually results in nothing that I can rely on as a concrete reason for forgoing an experience.
The way we chose to get married, I had up to the last minute to change my mind. No wedding guests, invitations, seating arrangements, flowers, or caterers. Today seven and a half years later, I can say my marriage is the thing that has brought me the most joy in my life.

In the article “All Guts, No Glory” by Molly M. Ginty the author explained the everyday battles women faced in the armed forces. Until recently women were not allowed in the military what so ever, at one point in time they weren’t permitted to have any kind of job at all. Since granted the opportunity to enlist into the armed forces it was still made known that women could not engage in any form of combat operations what so ever. This included special forces, short-rang field artillery, and infantry. Today all combat operations are open to women, for the exception of special forces, do to physical requirements. This action raised the attention of most of the united states population, with the worry that women have no business in the military,
Our basic concept of critical thinking is, at root, simple. We could define it as the art of taking charge of your own mind. Its value is also at root simple: "if we can take charge of our own minds, we can take charge of our lives; we can improve them, bringing them under our "self-command" and direction (McCall and Kaplan, 1990)." Of course, this requires that we learn self-discipline and the art of self-examination. This involves becoming interested in how our minds work, how we can monitor, fine tune, and modify their operations for the better. It involves getting into the habit of reflectively examining our impulsive and accustomed ways of thinking and acting in every dimension of our lives and business.
Critical thinking is a skill that all humans possess, however, it is more prevalent in some than others because people learn over time how to hone their critical thinking skills over time. When someone thinks critically they must evaluate and analyze in order to form an opinion; as learned in this week’s lessons, “[c]ritical thinking is a learned skill” (Ellis, 2013). Throughout this module we have learned critical thinking has taught people to overcome preposterous ideas and allowed civilization to find truth and turn from deception. With critical thinking, there are six distinct steps which provide the foundation of critical thinking, they are Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating. In the past couple years, I faced emotions of loneliness, worthlessness and even depression. I spent those years trying to figure out what was the cause of these serious emotions and one of the answers that I stumbled upon was when I finally talked to a therapist about dealing with my depression. In the late Roman Republic, the empire was close to descending into anarchy. The last century leading into the Common Era was fueled by political violence and murder. This was a result of a civil war occurring between the optimates, those who sought to extend power to the Senate, and the populares, who were in support of improving the life of the plebeians. Murder was synonymous with the political system and as a result, the Democracy was crumbling. There were several historical figures that sought to go against the Roman political system such as the Gracchi Brothers, Gaius Marius, and Lucius Cornelius Sulla. At some point there men all failed where one man did not. Gaius Julius Caesar was growing up at a time when the populares were losing the fight as their major supporters were being caught and exterminated. As a result, their powers in the political system were dwindling. This would serve as the platform for Caesar to begin his career as a low class patrician being outcasted by the capitol, to a Roman general showered with praise, combining powers with the rich and powerful, and winning a civil war emerging as absolute dictator.
The definition of critical thinking has changed somehow over the past few decades. Critical thinking first used by Plato and Aristotle in about 350 BC, the writings of Socrates, encouraged their followers to explore theories and concepts, because they believe that the final result of analysis of facts and conditions, were usually not what they appeared on the surface(Sam & Frederick,2006). Chance described critical thinking is the ability to analyze facts, generate and organize ideas, defend opinions, make comparisons, draw inferences, evaluate arguments and solve problems in 1986. Then in 1995, it has been defined as a skillful, responsible thinking that facilitates good judgment because it is sensitive to context, and is self-correcting (Lipman, 1995, p. 146).
The United States has made it very obvious that women have a hard time in the military with gender discrimination while serving their country. According to McSally (2011), “women now make up 14.6 percent of the U.S. military” (p. 1). Women are restricted from serving in more than 220,000 of those positions in the military. Some of these positions are artillery, tanks, Special Forces, and combat engineering. Since 2001, more than 255,000 women have been deployed to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, where more than 120 have been killed and 700 wounded (McSally, 2011, p. 2). The biggest problem with women being in the military is that they’re viewed as sexual prey. Also, women are paid lesser than men no matter what position they have.
What is critical thinking? Encarta Pocket Dictionary defines critical thinking as a type of critical analysis. Encarta Pocket Dictionary defines a decision as firmness in choosing something. The authors of Whatever It Takes suggest that decision-making material and literature tend to emphasize the product of decision-making but does not emphasize the actual process of decision-making. Critical thinking is the mechanical process by which problems are perceived, alternative solutions weighed, and rational decisions are made and decision-making is streams of choices (McCall, Kaplan, xv).
The night my husband proposed to me was full of family, good food and wine, but it was also one full of anxiety. His family was uncomfortable with me, and I with them. I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
