My Vision of a Nurse Leader
Effective leadership in nursing is crucial to provide high quality, competent, and compassionate care to the patients. Inspirational nurse leaders have had a big impact on the development of nursing throughout last century (Harris, Bennett, & Ross, 2014). A successful nurse leader creates an inspiring vision of the future, motivates the team to engage with that vision, coaches and builds his team for achieving that vision (Mensik, 2015). A successful nurse leader possesses many attributes. Some of the attributes are discussed below.
Optimism is a key attribute of a nurse leader. An optimist leader has the ability to keep going despite the hurdles that might be facing the organization (Bassett & Westmore, 2012). Optimism help the leader to reinforce resiliency, a long term perspective and tends to decrease stress. Optimism is grounded on knowledge, confidence and a strong sense that organization is moving in a good direction (Tyrer, 2014). personal life. Optimist leaders have the gift of being able to convince others that they have the ability to achieve levels of performance beyond those they thought possible (Anonson et al., 2014). Integrity is another important trait a nurse leader should possess.
When an organization’s leaders conduct themselves with integrity, the organization can make a very real and positive difference in the lives of its employees and others coming in contact with them (Parse, 2014). People want a leader who practices what he or she preaches, who follows through on promises and who “walks the talk”. Leaders with high levels of integrity are in constant learning mode (Fralic, 2012). They are honest with themselves, seek guidance to discover and work around their blind spots and are always learning and growing as leaders. High integrity leaders keep their promises. They will stay in communication with the employees until the promise has been kept. They have strong moral principles, respectfulness, accessibility and transparency (Milton,
2014). One of the important attributes a nurse leader should have is passion for nursing. A true leader who have the true passion for nursing is able to create an environment that fosters and supports staff passion, recognizes the significance of each staff member, acknowledges the importance of work that is being done, and creates professional energy within the staff (Anonson et al., 2014). The passion towards the nursing expressed by the nurse leader has a great influence on the team members in realizing the influence of their work in the lives of people who are sick and there by it helps the nurses to realize the greatness of their job and thus it increases the dedication and satisfaction towards their work which will affect the organization in delivering quality care (Walker, 2014). Effective leadership is important to the success of any organization. Excellence in nursing leadership continues to be the adhesive force that holds the health care system together (Patricia & Yoder, 2012). An ideal leader helps themselves and others to do the right things. A successful nurse leader is often geared at improving the quality of health care delivered by promoting great teamwork with one mind and one goal ahead.

Nursing is an ever changing profession, making strong leadership a crucial aspect. “Nursing leaders play a significant role in creating positive work environments for nurses” (Young – Ritchie, Laschinger, & Wong, 2007, para 1). This paper will define the concept of leadership in nursing. Many qualities are required to be a successful nursing leader. Some of the qualities discussed in this paper are: supporting and empowering team members, being well organized, remaining consistent with their expectations, and being able to effectively communicate with their team. Furthermore, this paper will identify the relationship between leadership qualities and role of the Practical Nurse.
The two common strengths that I saw in most nurses’ leader are good communication and time management. Communication is an important means by which people exchange messages. It is essential for everyone and particularly nurse leaders to communicate effectively and appropriately, using different communication skills to accomplish their functions and meet the standard of care. In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) Let’s explore two different leadership styles and discuss how they can enhance or diminish the nursing process.
If there is not strong leadership in nursing, I believe the profession will continue to lose exceptional nurses, since leadership in the workplace influences nurses intent to stay (Cowden et al., 2011, p. 462). Leadership is the process whereby the leader attempts to motivate individuals to achieve a collective goal (Cowden et al., 2011, p. 462). Transformational leaders are focused on achieving a common goal by fostering growth and change. This type of leadership decreases power imbalances as it strives to empower all members of the group. A transformational leader is one who encourages intrinsic reward amongst individuals (Nielsen, 2013, p.128). Grossman and Valiga (2013) comment on the power of transformational leadership and state: “this motivation energizes people to perform beyond expectations by creating a sense of ownership in reaching the vision” (p.
281-285) and according to Hanson, Boyle, Hatmaker, & Murray (as cited in Hamric, 2014) expert communication skills, commitment, developing one’s own style, risk taking and willingness to collaborate are 5 personal attributes of nursing leadership.
Nurse’s can demonstrate leadership by facilitating outstanding care to patients and it is related to how one’s values and behavior affect others. A leader is all about with success and contribution and a successful leader set his/her standards, goals and strategies at high. One can become a leader by assigned or emerged but both will be working towards a common goal of good or bad. In leadership, positive attitude is the key to success and problems and challenge in healthcare industry demand that nurses seek and fill the gap.

Additionally, the leader motivates, increases job satisfaction, involves the team in decision making, develops team members’ skills, and a role model (Kent, n.d.). The above descriptions fit my informal nursing leadership in the way I act in my practice. For example, I motivate the team to work together and collaboratively on delivering a safe and quality patient centered care thru the organization’s mission and vision. I set a role model on how, and effective communication is essential in relationships. Additionally, I encourage the team to continue their education, and I have demonstrated the last two years working with this organization, I have become certified in hospice and palliative care, preceptorship, and have enrolled in a nursing baccalaureate
I started my Nursing career in India and then I came to the United States and became an RN. I entered Nursing with the thinking that Nursing is a profession that will always allow me to have a job and all my patients will get better. However, from my experiences I understood that Nursing is more than just giving medications, and it requires clinical competence, cultural sensitivity, ethics, caring for others, and life-long learning about others and the evolving field of medicine. Florence Nightingale once said:
· Since this paper deals with the idea of integrity in leadership, it is useful to start this paper defining integrity. Webster's dictionary defines integrity as "uncompromising adherence to a code of moral, artistic or other values; utter sincerity, honesty and candor, avoidance of deception, expediency, or shallowness of any kind" Let us exam this definition a bit deeper. The first part of the definition talks of uncompromising adherence. This means that one would always choose the "right" path, regardless of what seems to be more appealing. Take the example of when and when not to lie. A person of integrity would always tell the truth regardless of the situation. The second part of the definition deals with what to avoid. Integrity demands complete openness always. The leader of integrity would never try to knowingly deceive his constituents at any time. The leader would always be open and honest.
My success as a nurse leader will be based on my ability to lead and inspire others. I will . . . “act with integrity, set realistic goals, communicate clearly and often, encourage others, recognize the successes of your team members, and inspire them to provide the best of care.” A winning team can be built only through a shared vision and acknowledgement of each team member’s contribution. In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
I feel integrity is an important value that managers need to have to become successful leaders. Integrity is the key for leaders to lead, to give their employees the ability to perform their jobs. We, as managers, need to always do the right things, even if we do not gain anything and we need to be honest. Managers with integrity could help their team to succeed at work by creating an honest, truthful, and respectful work environment. I have learned that having mutual trust and respect with my employees they will be more productive.
