My Vision of a Nurse Leader
Effective leadership in nursing is crucial to provide high quality, competent, and compassionate care to the patients. Inspirational nurse leaders have had a big impact on the development of nursing throughout last century (Harris, Bennett, & Ross, 2014). A successful nurse leader creates an inspiring vision of the future, motivates the team to engage with that vision, coaches and builds his team for achieving that vision (Mensik, 2015). A successful nurse leader possesses many attributes. Some of the attributes are discussed below.
Optimism is a key attribute of a nurse leader. An optimist leader has the ability to keep going despite the hurdles that might be facing the organization (Bassett & Westmore, 2012). Optimism help the leader to reinforce resiliency, a long term perspective and tends to decrease stress. Optimism is grounded on knowledge, confidence and a strong sense that organization is moving in a good direction (Tyrer, 2014). When an organization’s leaders conduct themselves with integrity, the organization can make a very real and positive difference in the lives of its employees and others coming in contact with them (Parse, 2014). People want a leader who practices what he or she preaches, who follows through on promises and who “walks the talk”. Leaders with high levels of integrity are in constant learning mode (Fralic, 2012). They are honest with themselves, seek guidance to discover and work around their blind spots and are always learning and growing as leaders. High integrity leaders keep their promises.
