During the first few days of orientation and quest, I kept hearing the unfamiliar word, "vocation." As the discussions continued and examples were provided, I began to develop an understanding for the concept and think of what it could mean for me. Ever since I can recall, I have inhabited an interest in writing as a creative avenue to share my thoughts and perspective. Abiding by this inclination, I developed my passion through taking advanced writing and journalism courses. Because of this, I spent middle school and high school thinking that I would be a journalist. To me, resilience means envisioning goals and fulfilling them despite adversity. Whether it be a long paper, reading, or test; a resilient student digs deep to focus and overcome the task. Additionally, it is important to note that I will not always receive the grade I had hoped for. When this happens, it is essential for me to reflect on how I can improve for next time, and continue with an increased strength. To improve my resilience as a student, I need to continue to practice studying for long periods of time, something that I did not have to do in high school. Also, it requires me to continue to improve my efficiency, while maintaining a level of work acceptable to my expectations along with my professor's.
When I face the adversity that comes with resilience, I need to remember that it is okay to ask for help. For example, I will seek out and complete extra credit assignments, ask my fellow classmates and professor's questions when clarification is needed, attend chapel and loft regularly, and try my best to remain social involved through athletics and floor events. Resilience is having the motive to go through hard times and ‘bounce back’ from them and learnt how to deal with certain situations. To be resilient you must have a positive point of view on life. Anh’s book ‘The happiest refugee’ He was born into a 1970’s Vietnam, He and his family were forced to leave their country due to seeking safety and freedom from war. Anh uses resilience through his comedic, selfless actions. Resilience has allowed Anh to improve the quality of his life, and the lives of those around him.
From this course I have learned that being a writer is much more than writing grammatically correct. A writer is one who studies deeply and takes into mind the audience and the context and then begins to form their paper. Writers are rhetor’s, encoders, and members of discourse communities. As a writer, I hold the power to influence anyone that reads my writing, whether I intend to influence that person or not. Being a writer from my understanding this semester should actually be called a rhetor or encoder, because just about every piece of writing contains rhetoric and intertextuality of some sort, whether you consciously recognize it or not. I find that the knowledge, skills, and new ideas I have acquired this semester will significantly influence not only my college career but also benefit my life in general.

The very first chapter we read of Mindful Writing changed my perspective to see that anyone and everyone can be a writer. Brian Jackson, the author of Mindful Writing, wrote, “In this book I want to convince you that anyone writing anything for any reason is a writer…Writing is not something we do just in school. It is a vital means of influence in all facets of life.” It was through that very first reading that I began to think about writing as more than just a dreaded part of school, and I began to think of myself as more than just a student forced to write. Our very first assignment, My Writing Story, helped me to reflect on my identity as a writer. I realized that I was a writer every time I wrote in my journal or captioned an Instagram post. Throughout the semester, as I came to love writing more with each paper I wrote, I was able to create my identity as a writer. I learned that I loved research and analyzing others’ thoughts and ideas, but that writing simply on my own opinions, wasn’t my favorite past time. I soon heard every question, suggestion, and response regarding possible options. I even began concocting false majors to throw some people off. Large-Scale Demolition was a crowd favorite.
From my understanding, I have come to view resilience as the art of not dwelling. This personal definition, I recognize, only summarizes half of the word’s meaning, not even touching on the action of recovery. I chose to view it in this way because, I find it helps me to find it manageable. I often struggle with experiencing difficulties or changes, I often find myself internalizing my problems which leads me to introspection and self doubt. By concentrating on a single facet I am able to better manage resilience. Despite my choice to ignore the second half on the word’s meaning, by choosing not to dwell, I have found recovery becomes easier to achieve.
