Personal Narrative: My Personal Experience With Bullying In High School

Bullying occurs everywhere from the smallest playgrounds, to private and public schools and even on college campuses. Before social media, it used to be a problem that went unreported and unseen, but now has extended “leaps and bounds” to include texting and cyber-bullying. My story of being bullied began during the third grade after I started wearing a back brace to school. I wore the brace 23-hours a day for three years until having my spine surgically fused while in the 6th grade. The bullying started with rumors and whispers followed by mockery from a few girls. I sometimes dreaded going to school, but mostly hated wearing the brace at school as students pulled and tugged on it which caused me to lose balance and fall. I fell behind …show more content…

I was painfully shy and didn’t exactly exude confidence. However, I realized that this was an opportunity to make a difference in bullying prevention. While it was during my formative years that gave me a good basis for self knowledge, character building and resilience, it was in my new school and the years that followed where I found inspirations from my teachers through inclusion and 504 accommodations. As a highly creative and visual artist, I utilized my actual spinal x-rays, that showed my before and after curve, and several of my back braces, along with two story boards to take my tale into the classrooms. From 7th grade to my sophomore year of college, each spring I returned to the middle school for one week and gave presentations about living with a Scoliosis to hundreds of students. I expanded the presentation to include anti-bullying discussions and advocating against underage drinking. When I finished each presentation, the response was an instantaneous round of applause. Soon students and teachers were coming up to me congratulating me on my inspirational story and asked if I would return in the spring of the following
