Bullying has greatly evolved over the years. We have gone from face to face bullying to a new form called cyber bullying. Many believe cyber bullying to be far worse than its traditional partner because it can leave a tremendous psychological impact on the person being bullied. There are a lot more people who report being bullied now that cyber bullying has become evolved. After a survey of 264 kids from across 3 different schools was conducted, it came to show that about half of them had been bullied and about a quarter of them cyber bullied. Around half of the kids say they know someone who has been or is being cyber bullied. Most cyber bullies attack there victims multiple times and for some reason, the victims never report it to the adults. It was found that males were more likely to be cyber bullies compared to females and that the females were more likely to report to an adult if they had been being bullied by someone (“Cyberbullying In Schools”). It has become much easier for bullies to cyberbully people because of all the advancement in technology. With the rapid growth of computers and other technology, cyber bullying was bound to outbreak. Bullies can give crippling blows to someone’s psychiatric state of mind just by using the internet, and the effects can be everlasting. It is easy for more than one person to bully a single target when on the internet. Cell phones are also a big cause of pain for the victims as they cannot delete embarrassing pictures or messages off of the phones of others who have received them. ("Mr. Bullproof.”). Researchers have tried to look into cyber bullying to try and find out what the reasoning is behind it and maybe try and figure out a way to prevent it. With how far along technology has came it has made it easier than before and there is an endless internet audience. Kids and teens can bully eachother through email and social networking sites such as facebook and many others. Traditional bullies had to be seen when they were bullying someone but a cyberbully can do it while sitting behind a computer screen and never even have his identity revealed. ("Cyber Bullying VS Traditional Bullying.") It would seem that cyberbullying is far worse than traditional bullying because of the emotional effect it can leave on the victims. With technology rapidly advancing, if we don’t find out a way to completely stop cyber bullying it will continue to be a problem and it will only get worse with the constant advancement of technology.
The definition of bullying uses broad statements to define the actual meaning. Because of this, people may view the definition differently than others. Bullying can range from physical violence to verbal abuse to even cyberbullying. Most people do not realize how common cyberbullying actually is. Over half of teens and adolescents have been bullied online and almost the same number have engaged in the bullying (“Cyber Bullying Statistics”). Bullying is nothing new but now times have changed because technology has made it possible for teenagers to bully one another without having to be face to face. This type of bullying is known as Cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is another method that is being used in today’s society to bullied one another and it takes place using technologic devices such as; computers, tablets, cell phone and using social media websites such as; facebook, twitter Instagram etc.. Although cyber bullying is not physical it has become a big problem in today’s society affecting many families psychologically and resulting in irreversible outcomes.
Bullying has occurred for many years and via the internet is a new form of bullying, giving higher chances for bullying to occur more often due to technology.
In Chapter 6 of the book, Bullying Beyond the Schoolyard, authors Sameer Hinduja and Justin W. Patchin (2015) begin to move the subject matter away from theory into application. In the last chapter, the authors ended their discussion that explained the details of cyberbullying, and in chapter 6, they begin to discuss how the reader may apply this knowledge to combat the issue. This paper will present a summary of those application processes and it will review some of the practical steps that the authors give, which if followed, can help prevent the occurrence of digital harassment, as well as help reduce the amount of harm that it may cause. The chapter starts off by cautioning adults to try not to solve cyberbullying issues by simply removing a teen’s access to the internet.
In 2006 statistics showed that 75 to 80 percent of 12 to 14 year olds had been cyber bullied ( Meech, 2008 ). Because of the use of modern technology this type of bullying can be done without being face to face. The use of computers today by children to cyber-bully makes it harder for authorities to pinpoint who is posting negative messages toward another person. A person who bullies on-line can send text messages, and photos. Cyber-bulling can spread through the internet fast and damage a persons reputation. Most times children who are being cyber-bullied do not report it to their parents or an adult. In the article, “The Myths of Bullying” by John Cloud, bullying is described as an exaggerated epidemic. Cloud presents details of high-profile cases including; the school shooting at Chardon High School and a suicide at Rutgers University. The aforementioned school tragedies suggest that the widespread international attention that these cases have obtained have “cemented in public opinion” (Cloud, 2012) the idea that bullying has taken on a persistent upward trend in the United States. Furthermore, he attests that the drastic measures immediately implemented to prevent bullying in school districts have also contributed to the overwhelming fear among parents and students alike, that bullying is an absolute growing epidemic.
Bullying is a growing concern in a society where status and exercising power over another human being are increasingly important in developing one’s social circles. Dan Olweus (Norwegian researcher and founder of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program) defines it as an “aggressive behaviour that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power. Most often, it is repeated over time” (Violencepreventionworks.org). School victimization is an especially delicate matter that has only really been in the public eye for the past half century, as more and more researchers and psychologists pointed out its short- and long-term negative effects on targeted individuals. It has since been widely investigated and numerous programs have been developed in an effort to address and prevent the many forms of bullying that exist today. The negative effects of such an abusive behaviour are various and can greatly differ from individual to individual. However, there are three main consequences that can be associated with school bullying, which are: school avoidance, depression/anxiety and even suicidal attempts.
Internet usage in children and adolescents has been increasing in a steadily fashion in the past number of years and with the increase in internet usage, a new form of bullying has developed – Cyber bullying. Cyber bullying can be defined as “the electronic posting of mean-spirited messages about a person,” (Merriam-Webster, 2012). This form of bullying can come through various mediums including but not limited to text messages, emails, videos, and social networking sites. There is an overwhelming amount of information that defines cyber bullying, identifies the demographics of bullies and victims of cyber bullying, and identifies the outcomes of cyber bullying on victims. More focus needs to be placed on who the perpetrators of this form of violence are and how this form of violence is linked to traditional bullying. This will allow researchers and practitioners to move forward with research and implementation preventative methods and intervention once the problem has already occurred.
A Cat and Mouse Game Bullying is defined as an intent to harm. (Leigh, 2013). Bullying, itself, causes 160,000 kids to stay home from school everyday, and it is the cause of approximately 4,400 deaths per year. (Wordpress, 2016).
Cyberbullying is a type of bullying that takes place with the use of any electronic technology. Cyberbullying is a major problem affecting young people today. There are different types of cyberbullying. This topic comes as an interest to many people these days because bullying is very common and it can ruin a person’s life. These days, cyberbullying is considered a new form of bullying. It can happen over the internet by computer, mobile phone or any other electronic devices. Cyberbullying could involve any form of unpleasant words or pictures being displayed on the internet for others to see. It could also involve the spreading of lies about the victim on the internet. Many people are stepping up efforts to prevent bullying in the first place. Approximately half of U.S. students are impacted by traditional bullying each school day (Ross). Bullying peaks in middle school, then reduces in high school. Other types of bullying may involve the passing of notes behind someone’s back, rumors being whispered about someone, or being threatened in the internet. The most common types of cyberbullying include passing of humiliating photos, cell phone pranks, cyber stalking, impersonation, online slam books, and text wars. Bullies appear scary but truthfully they are the unhappy ones. Majority of bullies have been bullied by parents, siblings, or other young people. This may trigger them to bully and pick on other kids.
Bullying is a worldwide problem and it requires immediate attention because it psychologically affects both the victims and the bullies. Victims may ultimately have suicidal thoughts and bullies will have uncontrolled behaviors that carry on through school and after school, but they can be helped. Although cyber bullying is a big obstacle due to the large-scale usage of internet and the ability to conceal identities, technological advancements and child supervision help to single out these individuals to reduce the amount of bullying that occurs.
This paper discusses the different types of bullying, particularly cyberbullying, and the effects it has on children and young adults. Also we will identify the policies and programs that are already set in place to try and prevent bullying. Studies done on the effects of electronic bullying in middle school children found that, “on an annual basis in the USA, more than 3.7 million students in grades 6–10 engage in moderate or serious bullying while more than 3.2 million students are victims of moderate or serious bullying” (Moore, Huebner & Hills, 2012, p. 429). There are many strengths and weaknesses to each approach attempting to combat bullying but since it is such a complex topic with many subsections it is difficult to identify any significant change. On the other hand, it is important to know that as long as there are cyberbullies there will be people fighting to end the physical, verbal, and emotional abuse children and young adults endure every day but do not deserve.
Bullying is an issue that is a problem in society today. Bullying is any kind of unwanted behavior to an individual on repeated occasions which is a display of power over someone. Bullying is mainly common among students in school, and unfortunately, it happens in other places like at home between parents and children, and on rare occasions, among adults. When people began to identify bullying for what it is, it was only known as a physical aggression towards others, but over the course of time, bullying has moved from just physical bullying to verbal bullying, and power abuse in the workplace between co-workers in different ranks. In a book called Welfare Brat: A Memoir, Mary was bullied in school by boys on the streets, and unfortunately, she was verbally bullied by her mom. Bullying among children in the society is caused by different reasons, and affects its victims negatively.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” These words have been repeated countless times, but they are not accurate. In truth, words can kill. Bullying has become a highlighted problem within our society, and bullying in the school systems is even more prominent. According to the news, there are countless cases of bullying, many of which do not have happy endings. The rates of suicide due to bullying are currently higher than they have ever been before. Suicide is the third top causes of death in young people within the United States, averaging at 4,400 deaths a year, with over 50% of these deaths as a result of some sort of bullying. Studies also show that there are 100 suicide attempts for every one successful suicide performed (“Bullying and Suicide”). These numbers are disturbingly high. Bullying is affecting more kids in ways that some adults may never understand. The fact that words and actions can lead to cutting and suicides is still a distant concept to some and needs to be brought to immediate attention. Laws are now being put into place to prevent these tragedies, but what is really being done to prevent them within the schools or even within the students’ homes? There is a lot of finger pointing when it comes to this topic. But we all want to know what the cause is behind this nationwide crisis and who is responsible for it.
Stutzky suggests that cyber bullying is the use of modern communication technologies to embarrass, humiliate, threaten, or intimidate an individual in the attempt to gain power and control over them. Bullying has been around since the beginning of time. These days however, bullying isn’t just happening on the playground, it’s happening on the internet and mobile phones, making it possible to bully a child 24 hours a day. Cyber bullying follows children around the clock and into the safety of their own bedrooms. A recent survey by MindOh!, an educational company that follows youth trends, reported that nearly 80% of the 5,500 teens that were surveyed said that they had been exposed to cyber bullying. Cyber bullying affects the mental health of so many young adolescents around the world, and the issue is steadily increasing as more and more ways to bully are created.In extreme incidents, cyber bullying has led teenagers to suicide. Most victims, however, suffer shame, embarrassment, anger, depression and withdrawal. While technology continues to evolve, new means of communication enable today’s bullies to become more effective in terrorizing and tormenting their victims.
