I have not always been aware of my cultural identity. It is made up of things that seem regular or come naturally to me but these are things that make up my cultural identity and make me, me. Although it is not always seen, culture is all around us. Everyone has their own cultural identity that is the foundation on which every other aspect of themselves is being built. Cultural identity is defined as the feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of the way a person views themselves and the things around them. A person is born into a certain culture with set traditions and customs. This is known as cultural heritage. However, as a person has more life experiences, perceptions can change leading to cultural diversity, known as cultural inheritance. It has also been a way to develop important life skills. From golf, to softball, to cheerleading, this wide variety of activities has played a crucial role throughout my life. Some of the most important life skills I have, have been acquired from being involved in these activities. These life skills consist of determination, leadership, and handling disappointment. Constantly being in a team environment has helped me better my ability to communicate with others and has helped me adapt to the circumstances around me. Sports have also taught me many important lessons such as learning perseverance, the importance of setting goals, and building character.
