Culture and identity are two very strange ideas. They are received at a very young age, yet they are very hard to give to someone else. They will affect you for the rest or your life, yet for the most part you are born into them. However, they soon become very important to us and we cannot, no matter what we do, live without them. They are a part of us, and a vital aspect of society. However, it took me a very long time to recognize that I had an identity and a little while after that before I knew what it was.
My entire life I have been a middle class white male. I was born into this identity and most likely will die in this identity. My entire family fits into the same class of society. I could probably wear a sign that read, “Average American” and no one would ever tell me that I was not. The neighborhood that I grew up in is middle class, and a majority of the neighbors that I have are also white and of the same class. When I was younger, me and my friends would play video games at my house until my mom would tell us to go outside. It seemed like the summers lasted longer then. This is probably because we spent everyday looking for something to do, whereas these days I spend my summers looking for ways to get out of doing what I am supposed to do.
We would go to the local elementary and middle schools where there was a small creek and pond. We would catch crayfish, bugs, and frogs only to let them go after we celebrated our great achievement. We would play tag, football, soccer, hockey and baseball at someone’s house or at the athletic fields of the schools. And all of us were of the same culture and class. It was always three to fifteen young white males doing what young white males usually do. A few of the other kids were Italian, which apparently is not Caucasian, but we did not know that.
I am an African, black female who grew up in a predominantly white environment around my living space, and attended a predominantly white private school. In relation to class, I have been fortunate and privileged enough to be placed in a living environment that allowed me to receive the best education,
Identity is 'how you view yourself and your life.'; (p. 12 Knots in a String.) Your identity helps you determine where you think you fit in, in your life. It is 'a rich complexity of images, ideas and associations.';(p. 12 Knots in a String.) It is given that as we go through our lives and encounter different experiences our identity of yourselves and where we belong may change. As this happens we may gain or relinquish new values and from this identity and image our influenced. 'A bad self-image and low self-esteem may form part of identity?but often the cause is not a loss of identity itself so much as a loss of belonging.'; Social psychologists suggest that identity is closely related to our culture. Native people today have been faced with this challenge against their identity as they are increasingly faced with a non-native society. I will prove that the play The Rez Sisters showed this loss of identity and loss of belonging. When a native person leaves the reservation to go and start a new life in a city they are forced to adapt to a lifestyle they are not accustomed to. They do not feel as though they fit in or belong to any particular culture. They are faced with extreme racism and stereotypes from other people in the nonreservational society.
Following the 1890’s, the world began to undergo the first stages of globalization. Countries and peoples, who, until now, were barely connected, now found themselves neighbors in a planet vastly resembling a global village. Despite the idealized image of camaraderie and brotherhood this may seem to suggest, the reality was only discrimination and distrust. Immigration to new lands became a far more difficult affair, as emigrants from different nations came to be viewed as increasingly foreign. In the white-dominated society of the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the only way to truly count oneself as American was to become “white”. For this reason, the idea of race, a socially constructed issue with no real physical basis, has become one of the most defining factors which shape immigration and assimilation in the United States.
To begin with, culture is something that may change evolve within time but culture is something that come with your heritage or your ethnicity the traditions and things that happen that make up your culture like how your parents raised you are culture. In the informational text “ What is cultural identity” by Elise Trumbull and Maria Pacheco, and in the personal essay “Ethnic Hash” by Patricia Williams, there are similarities and differences in how each writer conveys their message about cultural identity. Based upon their research, Trumbull and Pacheco present the idea that culture changes and that it will never stay the same, while Williams uses her personal experience to develop the idea that many things influence cultural inheritage but
“Our own culture is often hidden from us, and we frequently describe it as “the way things are.”” People do not even realize their own cultural identity, so then how do people know what shapes it? A person’s identity is shaped by cultural experiences that make them into the person they are today. Some of these experiences include someone’s parents, the media, and where they grew up.
“I am a first generation immigrant and a woman, but I don't really write about that because I feel like I'm a human being. There are universal human experiences.” (“Evelyn Rodriguez”). As a first generation woman myself, I can relate to the notion that I am more than my background. While there are universal experiences people go through, my cultural experience is something that sets me apart from others. I believe that it is essential for me to find the balance between assimilating into American culture while keeping my cultural identity.
The first thing to do when you're going to buy your first home is to go right ahead and be pre qualified for a loan. In order to do this you need to sit down with your lender and learn about the different types of loans. Together you and your lender can come up with the best loan for you. The main three are FHA, VA, and Conventional loans. FHA loans limit you to an $118,750.00 buying power. But, the bank is more lenient on slow credit and you can use 100% gift funds. VA loans are strictly for military veterans. Conventional loans give you a 240,000.00 limit. But, the buyer must have 5% of the sales price. To apply for a loan there is a list of things that you will need. You will need to bring W-2’s for the past two years. If you are self-employed then you will bring complete tax returns. You also need your most recent pay stubs covering the last 30 days along with your last 3 months bank statements of all checking, savings, and asset accounts. Other than that you need the name and account numbers of all creditors, certificate of eligibility (if you are applying for a VA loan), and Landlords name, address and telephone number. When all that is done, it is now time to start looking for a real estate agent to help you along your way.
What comes into my mind when thinking on how to categorize those people that belong in the middle class, I look at such things as education, race, family, income, gender and how many people are in your household. I look at it as those people who are making between $40,000 and about $85,000 to be in the middle class while the next step would be the upper middle class and then to the upper class. Maybe I am wrong here, but like I said before, everyone wants to have that “I am middle class” attitude. The most recent Census Bureau survey data shows that the share of households with incomes of $75,000 or more has doubled in the past 24 years. Other studies, however, discover that more people who depart the middle class move down than up, at least temporarily.
A common FHA required down payment amount is 3-3.5%, as opposed to conventional loans that could require 5% and even up to 30%. While it's always better to put down as high of a down payment as possible to lower monthly interest, insurance premiums and payments, many borrowers simply don't have the cash to pay more. Low down payments make it possible for borrowers with less immediate funds to get a loan and pay a bit more over
Most people that decide to buy houses do so by applying for loans. There are two distinct types of mortgages or loans.
Identity can be described as the way we view ourselves; the way that we distinguish ourselves from others while also comparing our similarities. In other words identity is what makes someone unique and average at the same time. To start off with I was born and raised in Jamaica for 6 years with my parents, but due to the fact that my parents were offered an opportunity to attend school in America they dove for a chance of a better life. My first home was in Jefferson, Missouri where it seemed like it snowed every day. White sheets of snow would cover every inch of the city, no stone or rock was left without an inch of snow. The city was so beautiful to me because it would always light up in front of my eyes. The people there was so nice that
You must familiarize yourself with fundamental conditions of your mortgage contract, so that will be aware and be able to plan accordingly.
When planning to buy your first home, don’t jump to open houses or appointments with sellers. You want to be an educated consumer and clear your head of common assumptions about real estate. A clear mind will help you make better decisions. There are only a few requirements to buying a first home. Those requirements are that you have a work permit and a down payment. Also, talking to other first home buyers will help with the process.
Buying a home is more complex then most think. A purchaser of a home doesn't pay in cash when buying a house. If that were so, then nobody would be able to afford one. A potential buyer must get a loan. The bank doesn't lend their money to just anybody, so there are prerequisites before a buyer should consider buying a home. The potential buyer must have enough money for a down payment which is 3% to 20% of purchase price, a steady job with for at least two years or more, must have a decent credit score with at least a 640 or better. That is standard for the market. (1) The credit score is based on the FICO score. FICO stands for, Fair Isaac Corporation, a company that has been in business since the early 1950's and monitors consumers' credit ratings and put a scoring system on it. (2) Conventional loans are usually financed up to eighty to ninety percent with a down payment required of ten to twenty percent. The potential buyer must also have a debt ratio not exceeding 28/39 of their income. The first number 28 refers to your new mortgage payment that cannot exceed 28% for your gross combined income and 39 refers to your mortgage payment plus revolving and installment debt as well as taxes and insurance cannot exceed 39% of you total combined gross income (3).
Identity is the condition of being oneself. One's identity is largely influenced by society. It has a far-reaching effect on identity by shaping beliefs, whether cultural, traditional or personal. It is why one's perspective on things is driven by what one’s society chooses to believe, because one is taught to think the way society tells them to.
