I was supposed to be the next Michael Jordan. For as long as I can recall, basketball has been in my family. All of my cousins played at every family dinner, the main topic, without a doubt, was basketball. This rich tradition of hoopers inspired me from a young age to be the best player in the family, however, it never came to fruition. Despite my shortcomings in being the next Michael Jordan, my love for the game will never waiver. While my basketball dreams were cut short, they haven’t defined my identity. Furthermore, having the devastating conversation with my coach about not being good enough for the team altered the way I view my role as a student, my mindset, and the relationships I embark on. Finally, through the NHS, I organized a clothing drive and collected clothes from my high school peers, which were eventually donated to those in need. Besides recognizing my true role as a student, I also discovered that maintaining an ideal mindset is crucial for achieving success. What is an ideal mindset? Believing in the ability to improve and focusing on possibilities rather than limitations. With this belief, success is inevitable; it only takes time to flourish. Growing up, I always settled for complacency and never tried to be successful in different facets of life. Although, getting cut from the team revealed to me that basketball wasn't the only way for me to be successful. Success in one area doesn’t define one’s worth or potential in other areas of life. As aforementioned, I wasn’t going to let my unsuccessful basketball career define who I am. So, I focused on having success as a student and in extracurricular activities like volunteering, but I also found success in little things.
