Ways I’ve Improved my Writing Skills When I initially began my English 28 class I was not the finest writer. I’m still not perfect, but I have improved a lot. At the very beginning of the semester, I didn’t consider myself a writer. I never enjoyed writing essays because I knew I wasn’t very good at them. I always made multiple errors and would fail to correct them because I wasn’t aware of how to. For example, I didn’t know how to fix a comma splice. I always became confused as to where I had to put the commas; not knowing where to place the commas would cause me to create comma splices. As you can see from my first essay there are many comma splices. At the start of my English 28 class I had no idea how to fix comma splices or even knew what they were. As I studied more and attended every class, I discovered what they were and how to fix them. I realized that there is more than one way to fix them. For example, I can place a comma before a word such as “but” to fix it, replace the comma with a semicolon, or simply a period. …show more content…
I would always put extra unnecessary words which would create a run-on sentence. I still make this mistake, but not as much as I previously would. I’ve learned it’s best to utilize fewer words to keep the reader interested; using additional words will cause my sentences to be long and boring. Also, I’ve learned that for my essays to sound more formal I need to apply more sophisticated vocabulary. From my first essay you’re able to see that I had poor word choice. I still struggle with finding stronger vocabulary, but if you take a look at my most recent essay you will discover that I have improved. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills.
My relationship with writing has been much like roller coaster.Some experiences I had no control over. Other experiences were more influential. Ultimately it wasn’t until I started reading not because I had to read but because I wanted to, that's when my relationship reached change. I would have probably never cared about writing as I do today if it weren't for the critics in my family. When I was a child, my aunts and uncles always been in competition with who's child is better in school. I have always hated reading and writing because of the pressure to prove my family wrong was overwhelming for me. I had to prove them wrong and show them that I was capable of being "smart" which according to them was getting straight A's in all your classes.
In my second essay, the analysis essay, the only transitional word I used was furthermore. The lack of transitions caused the flow of the paper to be choppy and somewhat unorganized. My latest essay encompassed many transitional words such as: in other words, instead, however, generally, furthermore, although, and nevertheless. I learned to provide the reader with a better understanding of the text and more enjoyment while reading through the use of better transitions. At the beginning of Composition 1, my points were not always completely developed. The advice my professor gave was to develop “a paragraph on each that goes ‘a mile deep and an inch wide’ rather than ‘an inch deep and a mile wide.” I took that advice to heart. I strive to practice the skills we learned, like the SEE strategy, to properly develop my points and increase the comprehension of the reader. Over the course of five weeks we’ve had to write three essays (four if you include this one). With every essay I’ve written I have improved my writing process. Having the chance to practice my writing skills in English 102 has made me a better all-around writer. From the beginning of this course, I knew I had a few major issues that I needed to overcome to improve my writing. The biggest being my issues with punctuation, specifically comma splices. Comma splices are something that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around. Although I have gotten better at recognizing comma splices they still seem to sneak in to my writing.
With theses, I never knew how to properly tie together my entire idea of the essay into a sentence or two. In my first essay titled

‘I am going to fail’ was the very first thought that crept into my mind on that very first day of class. Before I stepped into the classroom on the first day, I felt pretty good about my writing. I had done previously well in English, and didn’t think this class would be much of a challenge. This all changed on the first day of school, when my professor talked about the level of reading and writing expected for this class. I remember thinking ‘I don’t read, why couldn’t I have been born someone who likes to read?!’ Since this moment on the very first day of class, I have grown immensely through hard work. In this essay, I will explain what I have learned over the course of this class about myself, and about writing.
This semester entering English 102 I thought of myself as a bad writer with a lot to say and no idea how to coordinate it or express it. A big reason why I took English stretch composition was to strengthen my writing skills. I feel like I have a better idea of where to put my ideas but I really need help with the technical writing and how to do research papers correctly. My concerns over the semester are not the same as they were at the beginning, they have changed. One of my concerns was that I wouldn’t know how to organize a college essay, but that concern is gone now. A new concern I have this semester is my run on sentences and the punctuation and the lack thereof.
Thirdly, sentence structure and punctuation. What a complete pain in my neck. I would much rather complete the writing and have someone else worry about the correct syntax. Most of the time, I do not have issues with run on sentences or periods. It is all the rest of them. I found colons are good for making the eyes on smiley faces in my email (:-) ), but I am not too sure how to correctly use them. Please don't even get me started talking about semicolons or hyphens. My only saving grace is I still want to learn these skills.
In the beginning of my junior year at Minooka Community High School I thought that I was near to mastering writing. Looking back with the knowledge I have now, I am embarrassed by my foolishness and thankful that I did not brag about my “accomplishments.” I knew my writing was flawed, but I cockily assumed that my flaws were simple fixes; flaws that would be gone within some months of addressing it. My only worries were my word choice and the amount of time that it takes for me to convey my thoughts, and even then, I believed them to be only small hurdles. However, my AP English teacher of that year, Mrs. Lehman, would give me the awakening that I so desperately needed.
This semester I learned many new things in my English 1301 class. I took this class last year but I had to drop it because I didn’t have a professor explaining the work to me. And I really didn’t understand what I was doing. At first, I was scared to take this class. During my high school years I wasn’t that good of a writer. I thought this composition class was going to be hard since I sometimes thought it was hard in high school. My writing experience was good and sometimes bad. This semester in the composition class I had many writing strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses is what helped me learn the errors I was making while writing essays this semester.
This class has been significantly more difficult than any other English class I have taken all throughout high school. This semester, I have been introduced to different styles of writing that I have never been exposed to before. This class has been stressful, but also fun. With using all of the resources I have been given throughout the semester, I have been able to do my best to further my writing abilities and hopefully only continue to grow them as I finish my later years in college. Throughout this essay, I will discuss my failures, my successes, my overall performance in the class, and my skill development skills.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
Before taking English 1A, I was a discouraged writer because as an English learner, I did not believe that I had any ability to be an acceptable writer. Therefore, I did not have any joy while I was doing writing assignments. However, I have gradually loved writing through this semester. I fortunately got plenty of helps from my classmates and professor; thus, my writing skills have gotten improved a lot. I currently can feel that writing is a quite enjoyable process, and I like delivering my ideas to other people by writing, too. I am really proud that I have enhanced my pre-writing skills, writing structure and revising skills and have learned how to write an effective thesis statement and how to deal with rhetorical analysis. However, I still have lots of deficiencies in my articles, such as grammar problem and the lack of logical transition.
