This year, I've written and learned many new topics. I've improved in my writing and reading skills. Every year, writing becomes harder to understand and requires more focus. I have enjoyed a few writing assignments, such as the Wes Moore book project. It was fun and creative, I could draw, color, and do it my way. Although, I have trouble writing essays, I think I should work on that more. My grammar and punctuation also needs to improve. My writing has gotten some what better and my reading is good. I like fiction books that deal with science and fantasy. These are my favorite type of books. It took me a while to understand it. When I re read it on my own, it seemed to make sense, even though I still had trouble. It had many names and some vocabulary I didn't know. It stands out because I usually read books that are on my level, while this book looked like it was on a higher level. I've improved as a writer this year by filling the page in my writing. I've used to write one page and a half at the beginning of the year. Now I've written my work on two pages. My writing pieces usually come out short when I've typed it. Now it actually passes the page. I've also improved on my neatness and legible handwriting. At the beginning of the year it was a little messy and difficult to read. Now I can actually read what I write. For the Crucible Act 1 essay, I wrote it on loose leaf and rushed through it. When I finished I couldn't tell what some words were. This year. In my writing, i could improve more on upgrading the vocabulary. I'm not using so much ninth grade words but lower. There's some words I don't remember the definition of or just don't know how to add them in my writing. I need to improve on my sentence structure. This is a main problem in my writing. I would usually write a long sentence that would have more than fifteen words. Run-one and sentence fragments make it hard to avoid. In my personal narrative essay, there was many mistakes and errors. I needed to explain what I'm writing about. Most of the examples aren't in order. I could also improve on my reading. I need to practice making connections with what I've read. I don't understand what to do sometimes. It's hard to think about it. In the Crucible, I didn't know how to make connections, I used to make stuff up. Sometimes the life of the characters in the story couldn't relate to my own life. I also need to improve on looking up the meanings of unknown words. For example, the book I chose for my book project was “City of Bones” by Cassandra Clare. I thought it was going to be easy, but it wasn't. There were a few scenes that didn't make sense until I re read them. There were words on many pages that I didn't know what they meant, but just skipped over them. Sometimes they dealt with the story that made it a little confusing. As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
As I was looking back at my previous work I realized that my personal essay was my lowest grade. As I worked to revise this piece I realized the areas I can improve on. Some areas I could to work on, based of my personal essay was changing from past to present tense within my essay, my use of semicolons, and working on hooking the reader in my intro.
Regardless of all of these improvements, I know my writing is still far from perfect. My arguments still lack the emotional appeal that, if present, would make my audience consider my arguments a lot faster. My analysis still lack development because often times I just state what happens instead of explaining why. In general, I need to work on controlling my voice and tone throughout an entire essay, which can be fixed if I choose my words more carefully to make sure my diction is uniform. Despite all of this, I am satisfied with myself, I am satisfied with the ways my writing has changed, with the way my writing skills have grown. Why? Because I am learning, and I know that I will continue improving as long as I take chances.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Compared to the beginning of the year, I believe I have improved as a writer. I also think that my writing style has changed. For example this year I have learnt how to cite sources and direct quotes properly. In my “Last Rung on the Ladder” essay, I used to place a period inside the direct quote like in this example, “‘...have had a child.’ (King,15 ).” I have also improved on introducing the quotes. I do not say “the following quote shows…” anymore either. Now I usually talk about what the quote is about then present the quote. Another thing I have improved on is transitions between paragraphs. I used to say, “the first reason is …, the second reason is …” and so on. Now I connect my previous paragraph to the next one so that is is more
Writing and reading are two essential skills that we need to have in order to succeed in any field of study that we have chosen. Without these two we would not be here, wouldn’t be writing right now and would be considered the lowest class of our society. There are different aspects of writing that each of us may, or may not, excel at. Some of us are creative enough to write short stories or even novels on fiction while others, like me, are better at writing essays. To accomplish this we have all had a person to inspire us, to drive us, to get us over the hump of confidence that we need to succeed. Still to be successful we need to count on ourselves to succeed.
When I initially began my English 28 class I was not the finest writer. I’m still not perfect, but I have improved a lot. At the very beginning of the semester, I didn’t consider myself a writer. I never enjoyed writing essays because I knew I wasn’t very good at them. I always made multiple errors and would fail to correct them because I wasn’t aware of how to. For example, I didn’t know how to fix a comma splice.
There are three writing principles from this chapter in which I would like to further expand my knowledge and improve my skills. They are the following writing principles: the utilization of active voice, utilizing short sentence length and being specific in my writing.
I have always wonder if I had been a good writer, but now I know I am not. I must find a way to improve my writing and increase my grade to pass this class.
Another major improvement, as a writer and as a reader, is that I learned to intently analyze other author’s rhetoric. I improved my personal writing by observing how and why other’s writings were effective at capturing and persuading their audience. One issue I am still working towards improvement upon, is the fluidity of my writing. I jump from one idea to a next with little to no transition, often times confusing my reader. Better organizing of my thoughts, topics, and points throughout my writing would allow for my work to flow more smoothly and the reader to transition between subjects with without getting

When I first went to Baker, English was hard and I was terrible at it. I’m still bad at English. I had a bad grade and standing in front of the class or even just thinking that I was going to be called on to speak made me shake. Through the years I got better, in sixth and seventh grade I ended with a D or E, but now I currently have a C in hopes of keeping it till the end of the year. In my opinion, I am not a good writer, but I can think of good stories if I’m not rushed though I am bad at trying to put a comma in the right place. For me the places in need for improvement are in the usual “I don’t know how to do this” mindset but when it comes to actually reading a book the problem is the book not being interesting making me not read it.
In my future class, I will improve my writing program when I go back to my country. I will use the techniques that I have learned from educational journey in the U.S. Techniques such as how to plan an article, brainstorming, revising drafts and taking enough time to write a quality essay or article. Moreover, I believe that it is also important to teach the students various collaborative strategies and skills which they should implement in order to carry out the effective learning process. Among these techniques is to teach the student to respect the peer argumentation and discourse in the brainstorming phase. This means that the difference in opinions needs to be respected and thus this would help the students to have better classroom interactive activities to enhance their critical and argumentative skills in writing. This will provide collaboration among the students.
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
Looking through my past submissions and pieces of work throughout this past semester, I have made many realizations in regards to my progress as an English student. Through re-reading my writing, and reviewing the feedback I have received on my writing, I can recognize my growth as an English student. In addition to realizing my growth, I am also able to see a lot of areas that still need work. This past semester I have faced many challenges, I have pushed myself to go outside of my comfort zone, and I have excelled in several areas. After analyzing my past works from this semester, I have identified many re-occurring strengths and weaknesses from each unit, as well as challenges and goal assessments for myself in the future.
