Dunking a basketball is the holy grail for most basketball players to achieve, but most people are unable to do so. People give hundreds of excuses as for why they are unable to achieve the task of dunking such as their height, weight, or athletic ability. The only true way to achieve this goal is through hard work and training. Today was my chance to overcome my lack of height, and finally dunk a basketball. Standing at a proud 5 feet and 11 inches tall, most wouldn’t expect me to be able to do this feat. The coach just called the end of practice and to avoid conditioning, five players were asked to dunk. To everyone’s relief, the first four players easily sailed through the air and dunked, but it wasn’t a surprise since everyone was easily …show more content…
Seeing the padding on the wall behind the hoop with the Trojan man only increased my nervousness. Then after reaching the paint I planted my left foot with authority and the other leg followed. As I threw my hands upwards to gain vertical momentum, I extended my legs with all the power my small body could muster up. Sailing through the air, I automatically switched the ball from both my hands to my dominant hand leaving my right hand to drag behind. With all the adrenaline in my body, as well as all the past experiences I have attempting to dunk, I knew that this was the highest I’ve ever jumped in my life. At the very peak of my jump, I threw the ball down as hard as I could towards the rim. With only inches to spare, I managed to keep the ball above the rim and and put the ball into the hoop. The feeling of satisfaction took over my emotions, as all the hard work and training into my legs finally paid off. Seconds later, I felt the first teammate to jump on my back. I would never have thought that I, the smallest kid on the basketball team, would be able to dunk without hitting a growth spurt or having a trampoline under me. Turns out, all I needed was to work
Basketball is growing and becoming a well known sport, where two teams of five players attempt to score points on an opposing netted hoop (basket) 10 feet high while stopping the other team from scoring on their own basket. This sport is not just becoming popular in America but in many other nations such as Spain, Lithuania, Australia, and Croatia. However, one player in the United States named Stephen Curry (Steph) is changing the game of basketball by becoming one of the deadliest perimeter shooters of all time. Despite the opposing views of being unable to change a sport individually, Stephen Curry is evolving the game of basketball himself through his shooting efficiency, his ability to consistently make “bad shots”, and becoming a dominant threat in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Attention Getter: “I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a Baller, I wish I had a girl who looked good I would call her.” That timeless phrase coined by Ski-Lo in the early nineties, resonates with so many of us because all of those goals are things that people relate to being successful. And while I can’t help you with the first and the last respectively, becoming a “Basket-baller” is quite feasible, with a little hard work.
David Epstein suggests that innate talent plays a huge role in the way to fame. He showcases the rare story of Donald Thomas a man that immediately “mastered” the art of high jumping. Epstein explains that Thomas had no prior e=training or passion for the sport. However, he states, “ On January 19, 2006, [Donald] Thomas was sitting in the cafeteria at Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri, boasting about his slam dunking prowess with a few guys from the track team” (Epstein). Thomas’ words indicate that he was already an athlete prior to his first high jumping experience. He had to have the skill of jumping especially if he was able to slam dunk. Basketball and high jumping have a link between the skill needed to perform both of these sports. There was no evidence provided in “The Sports Gene” to suggest that a person without an athletic background grew to be a champion within a short amount of time. The author states, “ Thomas has not improved one centimeter in the six years since he entered the professional sport” (Epstein). Thomas made it only so far before he plateaued in his career. This statement coincides with Gladwell’s claim that it takes year of endurance and practice to improve upon one’s ability. Donald Thomas only trained for eight months before his championship win, but his past with basketball gave him the ability to
My basketball coach always says this quote before breaking a huddle and it states, “There is no elevator to success.” Basically, shortcuts aren't an option and you have to outweigh that with your determination to finish things. I can do anything in life, from getting that job promotion, to becoming a great businessman, to becoming a millionaire, or even attending one of the best universities worldwide and becoming an Aggie. Just remember In the words of Will Smith, “If you want something, go get it. Period.” Getting out of your comfort zone, studying harder, working longer hours, and having the never give up attitude, are just a few ways I can get those extra inches. It all comes down to determination and this is why I love having this ability and

Basketball is a sport that has changed in various ways since its invention in 1891. It has evolved and expanded across the United States and across the world. Although it has had its ups and downs basketball is still a sport that is enjoyed by over 250 million people in this world. Today it is one of the biggest sports known and it continues to grow every year with new players bringing new styles and competition. The changes throughout the history of basketball can be shown through its origin, how it developed into a competitive sport, and its evolution into present day leagues.
The game of basketball is a highly recognized and widely known sport. Basketball was first heard of in the winter of 1891 when a man by the name of James Naismith was told to instruct a physical education class at the Young Men’s Christian Association in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was instructed to put together a game for young men to enjoy while they were at the YMCA. While trying to come up with a brilliant and fun game for these young men, Naismith reminisced back on his childhood in Canada. He remembered a game his friends and him had played all the time: “Duck on a Rock”, which involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. Naismith also remembered watching a game of rugby going on in the gymnasium. The game of Rugby involved tossing a ball into a box. After a very short time of trying to make up a game for these young men, Naismith came up with a brilliant idea. Little did he know the game that he came up with just so happened to be one of he most renowned sports in American history. Naismith’s idea pertained to nailing up raised boxes so that players could attempt to throw a ball in the basket. When there were no boxes too be found, he used peach baskets. Supposedly, Naismith came up with all the rules for this game in no more than “about an hour”, according to Alexander Wolff. Shortly after Naismith had invented the game of basketball, graduates of the YMCA traveled internationally which is the main reason as to why this sport is so widely known. The impact basketball has made on the lives of many Americans is incredible in the sense that it has given people the ability to ...
If you think about it, it’s almost impossible to measure the force that it takes to dribble a basketball, unless you have the right tools. Let’s just think about the basic physics that you should know. In order to dribble a basketball you need to apply enough force for the ball to go from your hand to the floor and back up to your hand. When the ball is in your hand it is holding potential energy. Potential energy is the energy that is about to be transferred into kinetic energy, which is when the energy is in use. The ball is in kinetic energy after it leaves your hand and starts to fall. So the force of gravity has to be less than the force of the bounce to keep the dribbling going.
“The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
Have you ever watched a basketball game? Basketball is a great all-around sport that people love to watch and play. The professional level of basketball is extremely complicated, making it a great and fun sport. Starting from the early 1900’s and traveling all the way to the 21’st century, basketball has truly evolved from 8 teams to 30 and the NBA adding more rules each year.
This was amusing to us, the spectators. One particular spectator thought he would join in the fun. The third contestant, Jim Pratt, made his first attempt but lost his grip and fell onto the gym floor on his stomach knocking the air out of him. He got up holding his stomach, gasping for air, and laughing at himself at the same time. The small crowd joined in laughing with him. Nobody wants to try, fail and just quit, so naturally, Jim wanted to try again. Many of the cautious few in the audience expressed their doubts as to whether he should try it again. Jim, having the competitive nature I am sure that all teenage boys possess, attempted to dunk the round orange ball one more time.
Biomechanics has been around for a long time but in last twenty years technology have blown up so much that we have been able to take it another level. Equipment that we think is so simple now a days like a high-speed camera or a cell can now be used to record and track date. My first sport to ever play was basketball; it was my first love when it came to sports. In basketball there are a few was to score a basket. First one is the lay, second one which most people can’t do is dunk it in and last but not least is to shoot it in. For this assignment I will be going over how to shoot a basketball.
Ever since I was a little boy, about eight years old or so, I had an extreme passion for the sport of basketball. On weekends, I would wake up in the morning, eat a bowl of frosted flakes or cheerios, put on basketball shorts and then go in my driveway to shoot around. I would be out there for hours just shooting around or playing with some random kids that I would occasionally see walking around my neighborhood. This was satisfaction to me, but even better was playing on multiple public teams and not just playing in my driveway every day. In elementary school, I played in a recreational league, just like almost every other kid who tries out basketball when they were younger. This was fun and all but it was nothing too serious. There were never any practices, it was just one or two unorganized games per week. I never took
I had always heard playing basketball at a high school level was always the first step in order to become a professional. Though I only played once throughout high school I was still interested in how one could become a professional at basketball. For my senior project I chose to research about it and found out many interesting things I didn’t know about it. My knowledge for basketball grew even more.
Swoosh! Nothing sounds better to a basketball player, than the sound of the basketball when it goes through the net. It is, without a doubt, the most satisfying sound in the entire game. However, this sound doesn’t come easy. In order to hear this beautiful sound, a player must perfect the shot. The secret behind the ideal shot, lies in two incredibly significant steps; the position/grip of the ball and Jumping. Adding the following information to anyone’s shot would make it unstoppable.
