When I was about four or five I visited my grandma with my mom. My grandma had a friend named Kathy Condit who offered to take my grandma, my mom and I along with a few others on a boat trip on the lake by her house. They had every reason to expect that this boat trip would be as fun as all the others had been. Captain Kathy invited Kelly and Kathie. Kelly and Kathie were good friends but they both vied for my attention, and competed with each other to see who could give me more elaborate presents. As my mother tells me, I was the center of attention in my Grandma’s social circle. With chubby red cheeks and hair to match, everything I did was adorable. Just to be honest, I should also mention that I was the only grandchild among the three …show more content…
So they packed me up with sunscreen, an appropriately sized life vest, hat, swimsuit, child sized sunglasses, dry towels, a sweatshirt lest it get cold. There were crunchy orange Goldfish, cold grapes sliced in half to prevent choking, sandwiches, water bottles, beer, juice boxes, hand wipes, garbage bags, paper towels, a first-aid kit, a flare, life vests for all, and squishy white bumpers to protect the boat from scratching. When the trip began the water was calm both literally and metaphorically, it was a nice day and everyone was in high spirits. We were out on the water for an hour or two without anything happening, everyone just relaxed and enjoyed the vibrant blue sky and the cute little toddler waddling around on the boat, and later floating in the water. Everyone was laughing and talking when the first cloud rolled in. Nobody thought anything of it at first but then another and another cloud came until the entire sky was full of angry gray clouds. Before anyone could react, the heavens opened and a torrential onslaught …show more content…
As we neared the shore we saw several coast guard ships as well as a bunch of very large buoys to prevent us from crashing. At this point the other boat had disconnected, and we were left drifting towards the shore at an alarming speed with almost no control. Thankfully we made it safely, but the resounding thump when we hit the shore is something I still remember to this day. After we landed several members of the coast guard lead us into the student union and brought us some towels. It was not until everyone was safe and dry inside that the true gravity of the situation struck them. Even after all that happened Bobby still had to drive the boat back across the lake to the docks and then drive back to come and get us to return us home. It was a solemn party that returned to their respective homes that evening and the next day when Kathy came to visit us and apologize for what had happened, she began to cry. She had brought me a fisher price boat, which looking back seems like a fairly ironic gift to give someone who had almost died on a boat the day before. Since then I have gone out on boats many times and even several with Kathy. I may have forgotten, but my dad has not and he will always say something like “Kathy Condit is horrible and
Rain and windy conditions were setting us up to savor the good weather when and if it came. In keeping with Dad’s why-start-early program, we made it three-for-three on afternoon starts. We had another pair of locks at Beauharnois. Like the Eisenhower Locks, this is another austere setting with towers and high voltage wires adding to the forbidding atmosphere. It took us more than three hours to get back on our way after waiting for a tanker to come through in the opposite direction. We shared the second lock with a lightly loaded ship named Christine. It was like having a pointed four-story, floating college dormitory behind us. When we left the lock the ship passed us like they were the pleasure boat and we were the freighter. I recall Deb saying, “Grab the loose dishes. We’re going to get pitched around.” A ship of that size throws an enormous wake when going faster than ten-to-twelve knots.
It was a warm rainy June night the humidity was high which made it even harder to breathe on the crammed boat. My family was asleep on the constantly rocking boat suddenly the boat shook, but my family was still fast asleep. I couldn’t seem to fall asleep so I got up and stepped out on the cold wet steel boats upper deck to get some air. When I got outside I realized that it was pouring bucket sized rain. I saw increasingly large waves crash furiously against the lower deck. Hard water droplets pelted my face, I could taste the salt water in my mouth from the spray of the ocean. Suddenly A massive wave slammed hard against the ship and almost swallowed the boat. Wind gusts started kicking up. I held onto the rail grasping it as if it were my prized possession. Suddenly I was blown
Gone Fishing. It was an exciting day for me, and I didn’t even know what was going to happen. My grandpa came to my house and then he told my brother Luke and I that he was going to take us on a fishing trip to Canada with his friend. We were so excited when he told us I told Grandpa, “This will be the best summer vacation ever!” After he told us we went and got gear like fishing poles, rain suits and food.
It was a bright sunny day and the lake looked like glass, perfect to go water skiing. My dad, brother, and I decided to go get the boat ready for our trip. We had to get the sunscreen, refreshments, and water skis. Once we all got in the boat, we had to untie the ropes that were tied to the boat and the dock and lead the boat out of the dock without it colliding into the dock..
Finally, the boat slid slowly to the water’s surface and my terrified family all raced to the side to get out as soon as possible. (I was the last one out due to the fact that my engine had died). The employees were left speechless. The one employee was so awed by the previous chaos, he almost forgot to open the gate and allow us to escape the horror of the bumper boats.
I met Dorothy thirteen years ago. Ever since anybody on North Liberty Street can remember, she and my grandmother have been best friends. That being said, I spent most of my childhood sitting in Dorothy’s kitchen eating peanut butter cookies. I was instantly comfortable with Jack and Dorothy, and it wasn’t very long until I made myself feel quite at home when we would visit. Two siblings and several years later, I found it “uncool” to spend time with my grandma and listen to Sunday’s gossip, so the visits became shorter until they were almost non-existent.
Going to Yellowstone park for the first time was very exciting and scary. First, my dad bought the tickets for my family. Then he drove us to the park.My dad drove the car for maybe 1 hour. Suddenly ,I saw many people stopped and looking along the road. I wondered why many people stood here. "What happened?" I asked my mom. I use the telescope to see what happened. And I saw something, something very huge, it was a bear! A grizzly bear! "Wow!"I gasped and get out of the car and takes a lot of Photos to thes big brown bear. Then I was saw something unusual, a guy was trying to get Closed to the grizzly bear! Someone shouted, "That guy is crazy!" Then I looking for that guy,now he and brown bear was only a few feet apart! Then the Bear stand
“Come on, “ my counselor Emily screamed from shore. The quick rapids made it very difficult to dig our paddles into the river. My cabin was stopping to eat lunch on our Tuesday canoeing trip. On Saturday, we had traveled down to Brownstown, Indiana for a week full of friends, fun, and God. My church stayed at a retreat center called Pyoca. Every year on Tuesday, we would go on a canoeing or rafting trip depending on the water levels. Emily, Annabelle, my canoeing partner, and I sat along the sand bank waiting for other canoes to come in. Many other groups slowly went by, while we patiently waited for other groups to come in. I was so hungry, I couldn’t wait. Canoeing had zapped all of my energy, and had made me really hungry. I began to quickly wade out into the river, so I could help the other canoes come in faster. Someone screamed, “Be careful” from the bank. Nate Epple, a counselor of
Vacations aren't always perfect there is always something that goes wrong. At least in my experiences. A perfect vacation to me is when we are all together as a family, which honestly doesn't happen that much. Having a 20 year old brother an 18 year old in post secondary school can make things complicated. Or having a vacation with no,ILLNESS, which can be very, very hard to do!! And I know I’m not the only one who has experienced this on a vacation!
stood upon, was frightening. The only was to go was down. I took a deep
I go to the lake with my friends and family. I go with the Webbers and my family. The lake I go to is Cold Water.
We moved closer to her once I started school. My Grandma met my brother and me almost always once we got home from school. It was always welcoming to have a friendly face when you got home. She taught me how to read and write and once I was able to read she dedicated numerous books to me that she always recommended and had such a vivid story. On hot summer days she would take us to the beach and play in the water and sand, or have a great time running around on the park, or just going there to enjoy a nice picnic. We had such a long walk to our front door of numerous winding steps and she came up with a game to play down them. We called ...
On my mom’s side of the family, I am the youngest. She has four older siblings, and 3 of them have families on top of mine. It can get very hectic around the holidays but because of the large age gap between my cousins and me, I always had particular attention. The special attention was something I cherished until I got older. When I was older, I did not want to be treated as the youngest; I wasn’t a child anymore. I did not like that people talked down to me even when I was 17! I wasn’t knowledgeable enough to join the dinner conversation, but I still
Okay, ready, set jump, I repetitively say feeling my heart beat through my chest. Edges have always been a fear of mine while looking down at a 23-foot drop into icy blue waters. During the summer, I took a trip to Action Park, with my travel camp, Teenscape. Since I have never been to this amusement park, I did research about this park. I was struck with terror, after investigating the park, and learning of horror stories of peoples’ deaths at this park.
Everything for a year had been leading up to this point and here I was in the middle of the happiest place on earth in tears because my friends had abandoned me in the middle of Disney on the senior trip.
