A Hole In My Left Shoe
I have a hole in my left shoe. It’s on the inside of my left shoe, and it’s been there since the first week I had these shoes. It doesn’t grow or change, because the circumstances that begot it do not grow or change. It’s there because when I sword fight I drag that foot as part of my footwork. This hole in my shoe is a constant thing in my life. Even when I get a new pair of shoes it will still be back there within a week. Look closely at this hole and you can see into it, into me. You can see a story that begins several years ago.
I can see him coming from a distance; we stand in a wide expanse of grassy field in the upper reaches of the North Carolina mountains. The boy is a friend of mine; his name is Lucuse, and I’ve known him for a week and already we have the makings of life long friends. But right now we are enemies of the most mortal kind. We circle each other, a stick in each hand, our sabers, and weapons of choice. We size one another up. He is much bigger than me in all aspects except our height, which I take him by scant inches. I’m faster, and he knows it, but if we should get into a lock and are forced to rely on force he knows he will win. Our plans formulated we begin, a slash, a stab. The world around us blurs; it’s still there, but only as a memory. All that exists is a fog, a fog and my opponent. I see him in his entirety, I see the way his body moves, how each piece of him works to form his bid for my demise. I’m aware of myself; I can sense every movement that would at one time have been taken for granted. Now each step is a chapter in a novel that I can’t put down till the end. The adrenalin pounds in my mind as my opponent strikes at me trying to find a hole in my defense. It is in this feeling that I find true happiness for the first time in my young life.
That was then and this is now, and I’m a different person now than I was then.
The American Dream is something everyone strives for, it's different for everyone. The only important part is how they achieve it, some people try to take the easy way out which can lead to them getting in more trouble than they bargained for. In the memoir Hole in my Life by Jack Gantos, it is about how he grew up striving to be a young writer then his life took a turn for the worst. When Jack was in high school he moved to an island called St. Croix for his father's job, it turned out to not be such a good deal, his family ended up struggling to pay for rent, food, and other basic necessities. He needed to find a way to get off this island and make money for his family and quick, like too many people he decided that he would take the easy
In the short story “No One Is a Mystery” by Elizabeth Tallent the reader is introduced to a nameless female character. Throughout the story there are various descriptions that has great subtext to the relationship between the narrator and her lover Jack. One of the best descriptions in the short story is when the narrator is staring at Jack’s boot. The description Tallent uses makes the reader use one of their five senses, she makes the reader focus on the sense of touch. Tallent writes of boot’s frayed thread and scuffed toes.
My body grows weak, but I still wish to fight. I know, however, that I cannot. I must leave this fight to my children and the children of my friends. They will accomplish much and conquer much more than I could probably imagine. Maybe now is the time for my body, and my mind, to finally rest and have peace.
Nurture brings out the aggressive behaviour in humans. Mikal Gilmore’s book, Shot in the Heart, correlates with the aspect of aggressive behaviour nurture because of how he turned out unlike the other four, who did not have a this ability to kill. The nurture of a child into adulthood develops and creates the aggressive behaviour within the environment. The aggressive behaviour can be found in every human, but it is not until the cognitive development of a child that the aggressive behaviour can start to form and become overpowering. Though the basis of aggression is found in people it is not until a child is exposed to an aggressive
Director Burton uses exaggeration in cinematic techniques such as music to convey a certain theme to the audience, showing his unique style. For example, in the film Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton purposely exaggerates the color of the townhouses contrasting with the dark castle to show how light and frivolous the town is. This is also shown through the apparent exaggeration of the housewives’ personalities. Throughout the entire story, the colors of the town are so stark that the audience winces as the camera pans over the town. This achieves the effect of grabbing the audience’s attention, enlightening them of the fact that Burton wants to convey: This town is simply shiny and pretty on the outside, with the nosy, despicable personalities of the housewives’ within. These cinematic techniques and characters reflect the cruel truth of society, where people only treat you well when they wish to take advantage of you. Tim Burton incorporates his own personal feelings about the world into this movie, ...
In today’s society, people are being judged based their ability to embrace themselves in a world where everyone tries to fit in. Although, many of these people differ and become outcasts in society, others are unaffected by society standards and often lead prosperous lives. Tim Burton happens to be one of these individuals. As many people identify Burton as a film director who projects dark yet adventurous pieces of work, his talent has led him to become one of the most famous producers in Hollywood. Burton’s unique style is depicted in his films Alice and Wonderland and Edward Scissorhands, where the protagonist has certain personality traits that are not appreciated in society. Tim Burton uses low key lighting, close up shots, and flashbacks in Alice and Wonderland and Edward
To start, symbolism was used in Edward Scissorhands to emphasize the innocence of the outcast from society. One symbol in the movie was snow. First, it represents his individuality, because every snowflake is different. Moreover, snow is simple and pure. Edward was only taught basic concepts and manners, so this made him simple. He did not have any corruption in his personality. Furthermore, Edw...
I ran as if to keep up with the nothingness that surrounded me, and an empty vacuum pulled me beneath the surface. A bloody hole, when on earth did someone put a hole here? The annoying fact that a hole without my consent, had just been dug up, distracted me from the reality that I kept falling, a really long fall. Even the adrenalin was blocked out as a result of my frustration with the ‘hole’ issue.
In life there are many roads we walked down. I have seen them all, been there done that. Yet, I continue to walk down the same road day after day, to find myself falling short and falling in hole I can barely, and scarcely crawl out of. Until one day I fell in a hole so dark and so deep that I, myself, could not get out. I sat in this hole for what seemed like years, alone, cold, and afraid. And that's
It is a fact that a person may harm another person in a form of aggression at some point in time. When people get frustrated, they are expected to be aggressive. And when people do aggressive acts, it may be said that the aggression is brought about by prior frustration. This is the suggestion of the frustration-aggression hypothesis. (Dollard, Doob, Miller, Mowrer, & Sears, 1939). There are also existing factors that influence us to do so. Some harm others to deal with aversion, others harm because they expect rewards or have observed other people rewarded, or basically because they are obliged or expected to do so. (Fall, 2010) Expectation of rewards also involves material benefits, social approval, and attention. (Delamater & Myers, 2012) The reward to be expected by the
Why do so many children and adults have aggressive behavior? Could this be linked to nature or Nurture? Aggression could start at a young age and continue on until adulthood, and a significant issue can also prompt it. Sometimes the pressure of peers and the role model of parents can be a trigger to some negative behavior. Most individuals describe aggression as rage, fighting or committing a violent crime. But in reality not all types of aggression is negative, it can be used in the case of a dog guarding a home or a parent protecting their child. Some aggression becomes problematic when it intensifies to abnormal or violent. Many different circumstances in a person’s life can contribute to aggression. It has been linked to life changes like adding a new
Aggression has been defined by social psychologists as ‘any behavior whose proximate intention is to harm another person.’ (Fiske, 2004, P.495) This definition emphasizes that intention has an important role to determine the type of aggression. Psychologists have determined that there are two types of aggression; the first, hostile aggression, has a sole aim of hurting another, this is usually impulsive, automatic and derives from anger. The second is instrumental aggression is controlled, usually premeditated and usually leads to a goal. This type of aggression can include self-defense. (Feshbach, 1964, P.495). For year’s scientists, psychologists and philosophers have debated whether we learn aggression or if it is inbuilt. The following theories will discuss both views.
Let me just start out by saying that this is weird, mostly because I’m going to to attempt to write a story about my leg, which, let’s face it, isn’t that interesting. Granted I have to stand on it and I kind of depend on it for walking, but it is still just a leg. Even for a leg it kind of sucks at its job. For instance, last year around February I had to give this big speech (and by big I mean huge, like 1000 people huge) and I stood up in front of all these people and my leg just wouldn’t stop shaking. By shaking, I mean violently shivering from the relentless stares of people I didn’t know. At the time I was worried that I might fall over or trip, but luckily I spared my humiliation for another day. The thing I learned that day is not

It is also worth noting that the media does in fact play a vital and unfortunate role in the development of an eating disorder like Anorexia Nervosa. Media plants the idea for thinness in young men and women; the emphasis on the “perfect body” is showcased all around the country, this resulting in many adolescents overestimating their own body size and driving the development of eating disorders (Myers & Biocca, 1992). Childhood anxiety has also been attributed to causing or at least facilitating in the development of an eating disorder later in adolescence and young adulthood. Anxiety is a phenotype that is highly prevalent among young females that suffer from Anorexia; they believe themselves to be something they are not and tend to develop body dysmorphic disorder as a result which is a winding road leading to the appearance of symptoms relating to Anorexia. (Dellava et al., 2010). In college females a highly reported behavioral attribute that has been linked to a wide array of eating disorders. Research has found that impulsivity is plays a role in disordered eating patterns because of the role it plays on how young adolescents in college make decisions (Lilienthal & Weatherly, 2010). The attitudes and behaviors that are exhibited by young
