College was always a priority for my parents and I. Neither of my two siblings were passionate about a career that involved a four-year college experience. It was up to me to make my father proud, and I was up for that challenge. For four years, I continued to alter my career choice, it ranged from becoming a physician, to becoming a judge, and even to becoming a crime scene investigator. Finally, that last year of high school, I made up my mind and made it clear that Radiography was the path I felt most appealed to me. Deciding what college fit my needs was a lot simpler, given that Ferris State University was the only college that had a Radiography program and was the closest to home. Nonverbal communication consists of facial expressions. It’s fairly easy to connect a person’s facial expression to what the person is feeling. My mother is more likely to use nonverbal communication than verbal. As the day that I would finally move to Big Rapids came closer, my mother showed a lot more worry. For most of my life I monitored my feelings so that my parents would not think I am incompetent or too emotional. I finally opened up and communicated information that I felt was necessary to reveal about myself and it lead someone to develop a thought about me. Being slightly more careless about my parent’s judgement could have definitely constructed a relationship in which they would have learned how to give advice over time. Too much self-monitoring can restrict developing a closer relationship. Another concept within Kory Floyd’s book, located in chapter four, is an attribution error, a mental shortcut for explaining a behavior. This attribution error is known as self-serving bias. Self-serving bias is the act of giving credit to internal causes for positive reactions and blaming external causes for negative reactions (2011). I often portray myself as someone who uses self-serving bias, even though it seems as if it is the simplistic thing to do. However, I often blame internal causes for negative reactions but keep to
