Have you ever desired to know what someone was thinking when you have had a conversation with them? That was the one fascination that I wanted to understand myself. I extended my search online to research everything that I could find about this topic. In my assessment I found numerous sources that have done a vastly beneficial job of interpretation about nonverbal communication. The first source that I approached was; “How much of communication are indeed nonverbal?” This article was illustrated by Blake. Blake states that 93% of our daily communication is solely based on nonverbal. This increased his interest of this amount. Elly is a couple’s counselor, even though she concentrates on relationships, she does disclose in additional parts of nonverbal communication. Elly considers that your nonverbal skills involves our listening skills, and responding skills. If you can improve your observing skills, therefore you will improve your understanding, and observing others nonverbal skills. She also extends her knowledge into further various types of nonverbal communication, for example; sign language, deaf, deaf and being blind, children, and adults with special needs, and even babies. Also, animals put off nonverbal communication as well. Elly also addresses other types of nonverbal communication such as; accidental, empathetic, violent, offensive, personal space, dance, sounds, and even touch. Also, it identifies furthermore other aspects around communication that we commonly don’t think of, for example; personal appearance. The way we display ourselves expresses volumes. Therefore, it also shapes our listening, and observation of what others are essentially communicating to us. You could be putting off nonverbal cues that symbolize something other than what you are essentially verbalizing. I will be utilizing this article for my research paper. Nonverbal behavior is channeled by norms and most of us abide by them without being aware of them. Physical appearance, gesture and body movement, face and eye behavior, vocal behavior, personal space, touch, scent/smell, and time are all forms of nonverbal communication behavior. Norms differ amongst various cultures, ethnic, and geographic groups. There are endless ways and forms to violate nonverbal norms, and by doing so can lead to a barrier in communication, which are problematic to distinguish.
In every society nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful tools that a person can use to interpret the message that is being delivered. Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.
Joe Navarro, a former FBI profiler with 25 years of experience in analyzing non-verbal language, writes about the significance of being able to read nonverbal communication in his essay “Every Body’s Talking.” He makes a convincing argument to whether or not nonverbals, such as body language, play a role in everyday conversations.
I will now be evaluating a couple concepts from chapter six of Interplay, in which the focus is on nonverbal communication and how it can communicate meaning to others without the use of words. One of the first concepts that I would like to address is how nonverbal communication is very ambiguous, as it can be interpreted in several different ways. When communication is nonverbal, it is up to the interpretation of the receiver, just as all forms of communication are. However, nonverbal communication is even more so, as with verbal communication thoughts are being voiced, but silence can be interpreted as “warmth, anger, preoccupation, boredom, nervousness, thoughtfulness – The possibilities are many.” (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor, 2015, pg. 176)
According to K. Cherry, there are eight major nonverbal behaviors which are Facial Expressions, Gestures, Paralinguistic, Body Language and Posture, Proxemics, Eye Gaze, Hepatics, and Appearance. Each behavior conveys a nonverbal message to the sender and receiver (Cherry, 2011). The perception of the behaviors by the receiver may be negative or positive. Both the sender and receiver respond differently because of how the individuals approach each other. Our senses, sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing, are affected by nonverbal behavior. The blind or visually impaired rely on the four remaining functioning senses: smell, taste, touch, and hearing. The human senses have an intense affect on non-verbal behavior and communication.
Nonverbal communication is rich in meaning. Everyone communicates through nonverbal gestures and motions. I realized that you can decipher a lot from an individual or individuals by just paying close attention to what they do, and that words are not really necessary. Watching two people interacting, I figured that they are really close by their space communication, eye language, and body movements.

When we communicate, we can say a lot without speaking. Our body, our posture, tone of voice and the expression on our face all display a message. If our feelings don’t fit with our words, it is often the body language that gets heard and believed. Nonverbal communication is a rapidly flowing interactive process. Self-awareness and an understanding of the cues you may be sending are paired with the cues others send and pick up from you. To do this effectively, it is necessary to clear your mind of all distractions. Try planning, creating, talking to yourself, thinking about the other person or what to say, then you won't be paying attention to the moment-to-moment experience, have the presence of mind to pick up on nonverbal cues, or fully understand what's really going on in the conversation.
Teaching requires a strong relationship between the teacher and students. Nonverbal communication is vital, if underestimated, in building this trust. Nonverbal communication is “all those elements of a communication which are not essentially linguistic in nature” (Smith, 1979, p. 637). Some aspects of nonverbal communication include eye contact, facial expression, gestures, touch, proximity, posture, vocal qualities, and artifacts (Smith, 1979; Johnson 1999). These all interact with verbal communication and have many meaning that can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. As such, it is up to the teacher to be sure that their intentions are clear.
Nonverbal communication: every time we verbally a message to someone, we also impart a nonverbal message. Nonverbal communication includes body movements, the intonations or emphasis we give to words, facial expressions, and the physical distance between the sender and the receiver. It can be argued that every movement has a meaning and no movement is accidental. For example, through body language we say,”help me, I’m lonely”, “leave me alone, I’m depressed” etc. we act out our state of being with non-verbal body language. We rub our noses for puzzlement. We clasp our arms to isolate ourselves or to protect ourselves. We shrug our shoulders for indifferences, wink one eye for intimacy tap our fingers for importance, and slap our forehead for forgetfulness.
I learned a lot about Human Communication in this class when I read the chapter about Nonverbal Communication. Nonverbal Communication is the process of using messages that are not words to generate meaning. I learned that it happens every day. I also learned that is very hard to read or understand depending on the person you are speaking to or with. Verbal and Nonverbal codes work in conjunction with each other. The words we speak or say are used in conjunction six different ways: to repeat, to emphasize, to complement, to contradict, to substitute, and to regulate. I never knew until reading this chapter that we do these things all most every time we communicate. These are things I took for granted until now. I now know that I will pay
