Diagnostic Radiologists: The Doctor’s Doctor
A person rushes into the emergency room; he begins to complain of an extremely sharp intense pain in their stomach. The physician is puzzled to what might be causing the severe pain and calls in for an emergency MRI scan. The patient struggles to walk as the atrocious pain cripples him onto the floor; then a radiologist steps in the room and quickly starts the MRI procedure. The radiologist decisively identifies a piece of metal inside his stomach, after routine procedures he is hastily rushed to an operating room where they then excises the metal and the patient makes a full recover. Without a doubt, the man was able to live thanks to the efforts of the hospital staff; especially quick identification of the foreign object by the radiologist. However, radiology is not the career for everyone, but it is the pinnacle of healthcare science occupations.

Thus, radiology isn’t the career for everyone it’s a career that requires an extensive amount of hard work and dedication. The constant work being thrown at a radiologist is stressful and at sometimes overwhelming. Becoming a radiologist is even harder! With immense pressure in academic work, such as difficult classes, rigorous ours of studying for tests. Yet, after all this hard work this career is extremely rewarding. The opportunity to help others to help patients and doctors alike. Helping patients understand their conditions, helping them by increasing their knowledge on what exactly is wrong with them; helping other physician by guiding them to do what’s best for the patient to save the patients’ life.
As an ultrasound technician/sonographer I will have the ability to see dangerous defects within the human anatomy and begin a lifelong profession with many benefits. The Ultrasound was first invented in the early 1900’s and was surprisingly not used to produce photos of a fetus. In 1917 Paul Langen a marine life scientist used a form of ultrasound equipment in his attempt to detect submarines. After many failed attempts at using high frequency sound waves Dr. Ian Donald and his team in Glasgow, Scotland invented the first ultrasound machine in 1957. Dr. Donald even tested his machine on patients within a year of completing the invention, by the late 1950’s ultrasounds became routine in Glasgow hospitals.
The potential profession I am going to pursue is Radiology. Radiology deals with taking x-rays of the body and diagnosing what you find wrong. How the radiology unit works is getting a patient and having the radiologist technician take images of the body by using machines. Different types of machines such as, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET), identify all the images being taken of the human body (Phillip Costello, 2014). After the images have been taken they are sent to the radiologist to be interpreted. After being interpreted the patient is then told their diagnoses. Each of these steps involves writing in a certain form. Writing is a form of communication in the radiology unit so it must be specific and clear for someone else to interpret.
In order to become an ultrasound technician you need to advance your schooling beyond high school. It really just depends on what you are willing to do. You can go to college anywhere from 1 to 4 years and beyond. 1-2 years would be your associates. Which is the bare minimum. 3-4 years would be your bachelors. Often times people with higher degree levels will also get paid a higher salary than those who are just working with the bare minimum. The more after graduate schooling you take the higher the rate of pay will be. Attending Florida Southwestern State College to become an x-ray tech is a huge accomplish for me. Because I have a learning disability unfortunately I have to take remedial courses like intermediate algebra, Brush up English, and a reading course the first semester. The good thing about studying Radiology is you can switch to any type of jobs in this field. For an example, you can switch to working with MRI’s or Cat Scans if you want to try another department in the Radiology field. This specific field is for you to work with x-rays.
