In psychological terms Motivation is defined as a feature that induces an organism to act towards a desired goal and elicits certain goal-directed behaviors (Motivation, n.d.). Simply put motivation is nothing but a desire for us to want something to be better than it is now and is the very reason for us to engage in a particular behavior. For example hunger is a motivation that induces a desire in us to eat and by eating we have achieved success over hunger. Motivation is the driving force for many of us take a step towards achieving something that we desire and is the basis for any success that we want in life.
I have often wondered what motivates me to get up every morning and start my day. For this I give the reason that if I don’t, then I will be farther away from achieving my goal of being a successful career woman and a successful homemaker. For my own personal satisfaction and sense of achievement I want to get back to the career that I left behind a few years ago. And for the success of my family life I want to be a successful homemaker. I don’t believe in procrastinating and this I feel is the motivation for me to get most of my work done on time.
When I was in school, getting good grades was a motivation for me to finish my class assignments and study my notes daily. Grades do motivate students to do better but, grades cause students to want to get a good grade instead of fully mastering the material. They look at school just trying to pass which promotes cheating on tests and homework. I learned that I am motivated in college by extrinsic goals, such as my family and friends. My second highest motivator would be task value. This is actually true for me. Managers will achieve a better rate of motivation in their employees by identifying the key factors that determine the rate of motivation. These factors are linked directly to the employees’ individual needs, behavior, and attitudes.
Grades do motivate students to go to school and to get good grades but do grades really motivate students in the right way. Grades do not motivate students in the way that they want to learn and maintain the information they learned. They only study and try to learn so that they can ace a test or final so that they can get a good grade in the class. After they pass the class, they completely forget everything they were taught because they were motivated in the wrong way. Self-motivation is one of the key ingredients in success (Bethel University, 2008).Most individuals who became a success started by setting goals (Bethel University, 2008). The individual sets realistic goals to stay motivated that way the focus on the goal can be achieved. Different people are motivated by different things and at different times in their lives but we all tend to work better when we love what we are doing.
