Learning styles come in many shapes and sizes. But what is a learning style? A learning style is the way a student approach learning specific to themselves. Some students learn best by visual or reading and writing, some learn best by listening to a professor or video, some by kinesthetic activity where they can see touch or feel, and so forth. There are various resources a teacher can provide to students to help them learn their way. Things such as handouts, worksheets, and group projects can assist student. Learning styles vary for different students, but mainly consist of the three listed above. My personal learning style is a mixture between reading and writing (10), and aural (9), which the VARK test classifies as multimodal. This actually …show more content…
I find myself using more of reading and writing than any other learning style in this class. To help myself retain the aural part of class, I take notes on key points, and doodle for the in between. The key-point notes help me to remember more of the topic being spoken of when I made the note, whereas doodles help keep my mind from wandering. That may seem a bit oxymoronic, but without doodling my brain goes off on its own tangents. Doodling sort of anchors me to pen, paper, and the lecture. I also enjoy and benefit from taking part in class discussions and speaking in front of the class. I find that when I speak in front of the class, or ask questions, I retain that information better. There are times in class where I can fall behind, or get a bit confused, and at this time I refer to the book to help get me back on course with the rest of the class. Assignments can also get me a bit confused. I try to review assignments beforehand, to have questions prepared. Then again in class I review the assignments, take notes on them, and ask questions. Though it is early in the semester these techniques have proven effective for me in College …show more content…
Materials are limited to the textbook and the occasional link the professor sends. The things I find help me get the most out of this class is note-taking while going over the text, reading my essays and reports aloud to others, trying to remember important facts by auditory repetition, having my instructor explain things in detail if I do not fully understand, and researching the topics in the curriculum further. While going over the curriculum, I find that I retain more when I allow myself to pause and take notes where needed. I tend to take notes on things such as definitions, examples, and descriptions. In Criminal Justice I have to write a weekly essay. I am fairly good at writing essays but when it comes to the finished product I can have my doubts. Reading my papers aloud to others helps me to find errors in my own writing, and to get the beneficial perspective of another person. Many times simply reading over facts and the like doesn 't help me, unless I do it repetitively until its drilled into my mind. If I say these facts or definitions out loud to myself, it helps engage more of my senses and allows me to better remember the information. Generally my instructor, Paul Newman, is rather straightforward, but he can sometimes be a little sparse with instructions and that requires me to go to him for help. If I opt to try to figure things out on my own, I end up stressed and anxious. Luckily, I 'm not particularly prideful
Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
When I study, I use several different study strategies. The top three study strategies that I use are flash cards, I recite, rehearse, and write, and also I use chunking. Flash cards help me out a great due to the fact that I am a logical learner. I learn best when I can see facts written down on paper. It really depends on the information that I am trying to take in for the strategy that I use for studying. For instance, when studying vocabulary words and definitions I use flash cards, and other things that I study I will use other techniques. The mood that I am in when I am preparing to study will also determine the strategy that I will use to absorb the information.
Did you find it easier to understand a thing by reading or hear it from someone else or do your understand better by looking at the picture ? Some people may find it even harder to read a map. Things may difficulty for some peoples but others learn, it is because everyone learns in different ways. How people interprets or understand the information depends on how their learning style. Learning style may vary depending on factor that influence . While learning style has been defined as the way people learn, or how one interprets information. The most common learning style is the Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, and Kinaesthetic. Most of us may have some idea of how we learn better, but often we surprise to find out what our predominant learning style. In 1987 Neil D. Fleming, an experienced educator developed the VARK learning style as an effort to help students learn better. VARK contains 16 question that help identify a person's learning style. For some students they may have a preference for one type of learning, but also
However, the learning style that best suited my abilities was reading and writing. Based on this learning style, one prefers for information to be displayed in words. Individuals who possess this learning style operate and communicate effectively with words. This methodology of transmitting information from the short term memory storage (STS) to the long term memory storage (LTS) can be attributed to the read/write learning style. It encourages text based input and output in all its forms, utilizing the same skills for reading and writing in order to learn. Being a read/write learner demonstrates learning through the processes most commonly used. Having words is a cultural component of who we are and read/write are both important skills not just for the professional scope, but for the cognitive process as well. Read/write learning style stimulates the frontal lobe of the brain where higher level processes are held. Then in the left hemisphere, where articulation and comprehension for language is centralized, this learning style mobilizes activity in this region which consequently results to increased productivity overall. “Those who prefer this modality are often addicted to PowerPoint , the Internet, lists, filofaxes, dictionaries, thesauri, quotations and words,” ( n.d., stellar leadership). This learning styles is highly encouraged in education and other fields,
The two tests that I have done have pretty much accurately described what kind of learner I am. VARK model states that my dominant learning style is Kinesthetic. Kinesthetic learners learn by doing things physically with hands on experience rather than listening to someone else. I tend to move around a lot when remembering or revising for an exam which helps me express a thought or understand a subject through bodily movement. My other style is Linguistic and Spatial Visual learning. It is easier for me to grasp the meaning of things by visually understanding a concept with the help of graphs, pictures, videos, etc or taking notes as I learn. My least preferred style was Auditory. This is fairly true as I ne...
The VARK model is one of the most common methods that people use to categorise learning styles. It was made by a man named Neil Fleming. The VARK model “expanded on the Neuro-linguistic programming models” (16). It was launched by Neil Fleming in 1987, after he finished his work and studies at Lincoln University. Before Neil Fleming, the VAK model was the most commonly used method to categorise learning styles. The VAK model doesn’t include Read/Write. The Read/Write learning style was created by Neil Fleming after he realised that it was best to split the Visual learning style into Symbolic (Visual), and Read/Write.
There are three types of learning styles. They are: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. An auditory learner processes information by hearing and discussing the information. Visual learners process information through visuals such as charts, pictures, and other types of printed information. Kinesthetic learners process information by muscle movements and experiences that are hands-on. Through the assessment I have discovered that my strongest learning style is a visual style with a score of 13, followed by kinesthetic, 8, and lastly auditory with a score of 4. Based upon this, my strength is using a visual learning style. The things I do now in studying that are within the guidelines include: read the book chapters and highlight while reading, pay special attention to charts and diagrams shown in the book or in class. By reading and highlighting I have found I can quickly go back through the information and reread the important facts, helping me remember them better. The more times I go over the information, the more effective I am come test day. I have found it very easy to read charts and diagrams in textbooks. Generally, by being able to read certain charts, it is much easier and faster to comprehend the information than if I was to read the paragraphs about it. A new study strategy that I will implement will include: writing what I highlight down into my own handwriting, adding ...
A learning style is something that everyone in the world processes in a different way. Each person has their very own specialized learning style that is indigenous to them. Basically, there are three main learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Each learning style has common characteristics that describe what each learning style is and does. The visual learning style uses visual objects such as charts, pictures, graphs, and just overall seeing information. When your learning style is visual, you learn by watching other people and reading their body language; which means you also have a good perception of aesthetics. People who are visual learners are able to memorize and recall different types of information any time that they want. Once a visual writer has written something down, it is unlikely that they will forget it! An advantage that a visual learner has, is the ability to learn more by watching when they listen to lectures. If you are a visual learner, there are a few tips that should help you learn more. When taking notes, it will be more helpful to you to turn the notes into pictures, charts, or maps that are easier for you to understand. Also, make sure to avoid distractions such as windows and doorways. You should always try to learn
Your instructional method you're showing style is formed by these attributes, affected by your own training, and turns into the aide you use to teach your students. Learning is a cooperative effort, requiring engagement on the parts of both students and teachers. Each student also has their own learning style: they learn at their own pace and in their own ways. While I is important to establish your teaching style, you should also be flexible enough to take the learning styles of your students into account.
Teaching style is about how materials are delivered, rather than what is delivered. Teachings also refer to the process deliver knowledge and skill from the teacher to the students. It include the activities of educating or instructing. Each person has his or her own teaching style, and aware of their preferences when delivering the instruction. It can be defined as:
It worked for me to an extinct like I had to basically form an alliance or network of people who were in my classes to get myself to stay focused and sometimes help them stay focused. I used to think i needed a small pill in order to get through a tough test or stay up all night cramming all the information I need for the test the next day. But I learned if instead of cramming i studied at the library for an hour a day I would do a lot better than cramming. Although we have spended a handful of nights staying up till studying and going over our study guides. In my opinion the skills we learned in this course are skills we will know and use for years to
Each person has his or her own style of learning. Learning styles include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In the questionnaire, I learned that I am very much a visual learner. This reflection will show what I have learned about my unique learning style and how understanding learning styles of the children I teach will be helpful as I become a teacher.
Wow! I have a personal learning style! If I had given any thought to my learning style prior to this course, I would have said simply, “Some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not.” Now I can say, “I am a grouper, a top-down learner, an owl, in the C-D quadrants, and my strong intelligences are linguistic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal”. What all this means, still, is some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not. But there I go again, simplifying the matter.
To accomplish this goal, I know that I will need to develop a couple of essential skills here in college. To have a better knowledge of engineering, I first distinguished my strengths I have in the field. For strengths, I have always been exceptional in math and science, I’m a pretty quick learner, I am good when it comes to hands on projects, and I love working in teams. I did not feel as though I had any weakness in engineering, but after doing some searching, I realized that I have a big problem when it comes to note taking. Throughout high school, I subconsciously took notes in class. The main reason why: because I had to. However, I now realize that for me to gain a truly deeper knowledge in engineer, I have to take better, meaningful notes. While reading The Transition to College Writing, I learned many ways to take notes, the right way. One strategy I liked from the book was taking reflective notes. While taking notes, I should also add my personal reaction to the content. This I believe will help me truly connect the dots when trying to gain a deeper knowledge in the engineering field. Also, I learned not to write everything the teacher says. Instead, the book taught me to write only the main, most important points. This should really help me, as I do occasionally struggle trying to write full, complete notes, while listening to a lecture at the same time. These strategies should
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
