Personal Experience: Growing Up In An Indian Household

Growing up in an Indian household and also being a first generation Indian American in my family, mixing both Indian culture with American culture has been always been a challenge. Furthermore my parents came into the country not speaking english or being educated, as a result those factors impacted me by making school was difficult and understanding my friends around me was also difficult. However I am grateful for my upbringing in both american and indian culture due to the fact that I get to experience both cultures in a diverse way. Growing up my parents wanted to be assured that I would continue their Indian lineage. However they also want me to embrace my american side as well, I hope I can do just that. Eventually my parents met each other and got married and of course it was arranged they only saw each other once, that was due to our culture of arranged marriages. Once my parents got married my mom had to move to Georgia leaving her family behind in California. My parents continued to work at a hotel for 5 years, later my dad saved up enough to open a small hotel, however these were rough years for my mom. Indian society including my grandparents looked down on my mom because they expected her to have an offspring by now. Eventually even my dad believed that my something “religiously” was wrong with my mom. So they took her to india where she met various priests and sages who told her to eat fruits and other indian remedies to make her pregnant. Eventually I was born on March 11 of 1999, due to indian culture my dad was not allowed to look at me for a week after my birth.
