What is a survivor? A survivor is a person who does not gives up, work hard, and have faith. Every year, thousands commit suicide, yet the thousands that are diagnosed with cancer do not commit suicide. Cancer patients always fight the battle till the end. Even if a cancer patient dies, he or she is still a survivor because he or she had put up a great fight against the world's most dangerous killer, cancer. I would describe myself as survivor and a religious believer because I fought against death, physical disabilities, and learning disabilities and always knew, not believed, but knew that God would helped me. My battle against death shaped me into a survivor and religious person. I was diagnosed with stage three osteosarcoma at the age …show more content…
Surgeons removed my entire femur in a eleven hour surgery. My doctors said that I would never walk again, but I prayed for healing. Two years later, I was able to walk again because of my positive mindset and prayers. "You can be a victim of cancer, or a survivor of cancer. It's a mindset." (Dave Pelzer). Because I was receiving a lot of chemotherapy, my learning skills were affected. In the hospital, I struggled relearning simple concepts such as the alphabet. I had a problem in reading, speech and English. A neurologist told me that my brain was too damaged to return to school; however, I went back to school despite the neurologist approval, and I started to study two hours per subject every day. Years later in high school, I made all A's and Top Ten. My determination to triumph over my learning disabilities resulted in my academic achievement. I am a survivor who conquered health and educational hardships by having determination, faith, and most importantly, God's grace. I refuse to let anyone tell me what I cannot do and who I cannot be. Even against all odds, I work hard to achieve whatever I desire which is why I would make a good candidate for this scholarship. Because of the many obstacles I have faced, I know that I really can do all things through
A survivor is someone who remains alive while others have died during a time of disaster. The most vital attributes a survivor must uphold are humility and independence. A survivor should be able to uphold the trait of humility in a time of crisis. In the article, “Miraculous Survivors: Why they live while others die” about many people who exemplify attributes of a survivor, J. Blake states, “They survive because they are humble… They know when to rest, when they shouldn’t try something beyond their capabilities”( Blake, 19).
A survivor is someone who can take the pressure of the hardship they may go through in life. Can push their limits and do things they may not want to do. A survivor is someone who stays strong and positive in a time of doubt, or to have hope when the situation seems hopeless. Someone who does not give up no matter how much they want to. Instead he keeps his head up because he knows that he has his friends and family waiting for him when he comes home. A survivor needs motivation to survive situations of doubt and hopelessness.
Lone Survivor is a true story that likes most books about the SEALs starts out for the most part with him talking about his friends. There is a little lead up to this and it starts with Marcus Luttrell (the lone survivor) going through his tough, country style childhood in Texas. At a very young age Luttrell decides he wants to be a Navy Seal, looking from help and training from a Green Beret named Billy Shelton. The next portion of the book falls into the usual SEAL book. It begins with his sign-up with the navy, leads through a short section of basic training. I won’t go into the details of these portions, since it has been written about and shown on television a lot. Lone Survivor does go through Luttrell’s specific experiences, difficulties, and accomplishments.
Although some individuals may believe that it was a miracle that my father survived cancer, it was much more than that. The optimism of my family, friends, and loved ones enabled my dad to relieve his stress and focus on his cancer treatment. This situation has changed my mindset in life and it has provoked me to stay hopeful even when the odds are not in my favor. I’ve began to use positive thinking to help guide myself to my ambitions. This made my transition into adulthood much easier because I was prepared to deal with difficult situations. I began to cherish my loved ones even more than before. I realized all the luxuries that I had received and took for granted. I learned that the most important people in life is your family and without them, it’s near impossible to be successful. If my father had lost his fight, I would have had to become more independent as I would become the man of the house. Going into adulthood, I’ve learned that I should take situations into my owns hands rathering that relying on others. Some people that may be there for you today, may not be there
Over all, I believe I embody the type of person this foundation is trying to help through this scholarship. The book is written by Pamela Tucker Burton, an ordinary person who experienced the death of four family members, she shares her experiences and how a family stay positive, when they faced a deadly disease. In Pamela’s family were no cancer survivors, there were no encouraging sentiments to alleviate their pain. For a family with strong Christian beliefs the only healing and strength for their family was to pray, don’t be afraid and be spiritually prepared for the final journey.
According to Dictionary.com, a survivor is “a person who continues to function or prosper in spite of opposition, hardship, or setbacks.” Through reading “The Most Dangerous Game”, one can evaluate that Rainsford is a believable character with traits comparable to hunters in modern society. His experiences allow him to later empathize with his quarry, while unveiling his courage and wits. His incentive to overcome monumental challenge represents the determination of a survivor. Rainsford reflects the idea that man must be “cunning, courageous, and able to reason” in order to survive. (Connell 69)
I need this scholarship to achieve my goals and most importantly to make my family proud. My family did not get this chance that you are giving me so I am not just doing this for me, I am also doing this for them. I already have all the support from all of my family and all of my friends, but that alone is not enough to conquer my dreams, and to prove all the people that have doubted me that they were wrong. I hope that this organization can help me reach my goals, and to most importantly make them become a reality. I want to look back onto my life and know that this scholarship, and college helped me to be the man I will be. I hope you accept me into your college and most importantly giving me this
I am proud to say that I am a survivor of breast cancer. The years since I discovered I had cancer have, in many ways, been the best part of my life.
Lessons can be learned from the littlest of experiences. Important life lessons can be taken from not only success, but also our greatest failures. Adversity can greatly alter our perspective and provide an individual with wisdom. The first time I was faced with adversity was when I broke my tibia and fibula. I was involved in sports and this was definitely a setback, to say the least. Moments after the accident, I realized that the months of recovery I would have to toil. I realized these future and upcoming months would require patience and I would undergo great amounts of drudgery.
Something that I have learned after overcoming this battle is that life is very unpredictable and it is up to the individual to rise above and choose the right path. This excerpt from the poem “Recovery” by Maya Angelou has given me encouragement and inspiration to move on with my life and become the best person that I can be: “A last love, proper in conclusion, should snip the wings forbidding further flight. But I now reft of that confusion, am lifted up and speeding towards the light.” I live by these words everyday because they motivate me to succeed and overcome the impossible.
I learned that life is going to throw you challenges and will attempt to set us back from our goals. Anybody can achieve any goal they set their minds to with hard work and determination. With my learning disability, I worked harder than those who were not limited in their strengths, but this turned out to be my ultimate strength. Working hard will only help you achieve in life. I view effort and trying as keys to success. I am a student diagnosed with a learning disability associated with my written expression, writing to your foundation because I never let a setback stop me from achieving my goals. I believe that I have an extraordinary message for others. I feel if I were the recipient for your scholarship it would definitely push me significantly closer to my goals coming from a son of a hard working single mother that I wish to give back what she has given
I was having a weekend getaway with my cousins when, at midnight, we were told that we had to return immediately. I was unaware of the gravity of why I had to come back home so soon, but I knew that it was severe. When I arrived to the hospital, I found out my brother had suffered a heart attack and passed away. I was numb and didn’t know how to process that information. He was my guiding light on my journey going back to school and coping with the death of my first brother. Instead of crying hysterically, all I could think of was “situations like this need to be prevented.” It could have been easy to give up but perseverance and resilience were my only options. Giving up on my dreams had never crossed my mind but my fortitude grew stronger with every wrench thrown my
School began interesting for me my last year of high school. School was always important to me, but I never had a passion for it. However, I always put myself in a position to find a passion for school. I never skipped class, I never talked back, and I did my best to stay engaged in every class at all times. A desire to succeed in school did not happen until my final year of high school. I made it my mission to do well in school even if I had not found a passion for school. With my Dyslexia and my ADD, I have always struggled in school, and still struggle in school. I did not discover my Dyslexia and ADD until I was in the 10th grade. The doctor said I relied on my intelligence to create other ways to find the answer which masked my disabilities.
My father had broken his pelvis in 4 places. He looked helpless and miserable, something I had never seen until that day. Over time, he learned how to use his lower body again. With the help of my family and the support of his friends, my dad started to get better. The doctors said he would never be able to walk again, but within three months of living in his parents’ house in a hospital bed, being taken care of like a child, he gained back his strength and is better than before. Besides the emotional trauma this incident left on my family, it’s physically like the accident never even happened.
