My Personal Doctoral Narrative
My doctoral studies will end with my dissertation, which will tell everyone who I am and what my research is about and why it's necessary. During the process, I will learn and use new research skills as well as further develop the one I already have. As a previous history major, I learned a lot about telling a story; now as a doctoral student, I will be the one telling the story. Over the last eight weeks, I have learned how to read and understand advanced scholarly writing, how to apply APA style and the importance of academic honesty and integrity. I have grown and developed in my interest in becoming an educator, and my goal is to focus on the bigger reach goals, which I will attain through smaller scale research

I feel I have grown more as a professional rather than as a student. I am more realistic when setting goals, and I understand that I am surrounded by people that want to assist me. Further, while my expectations for my doctoral studies are still a mystery to me, I have access to numerous resources that will help in my success. My goals have also changed because I was a history major and now I education major. Consequently, I cannot approach this program in the same ways I did my history program of study. My final goal is to graduate with my doctorate. Nevertheless, there will be a lot of steps that I will have to take to ensure my goals are met. I will have to use my resources, be a realist, do my reading and research from the experts, and last but not least, set more manageable goal. I have always had a burning desire to teach, so all my goals will be stepping stones until I finally get there. Now that I know what I need to improve on both personally and academically, I have set my goals in ways that make …show more content…
The public perception of the teaching profession is not usually realistic and is extreme at times, causing a lack of respect for the teacher or the profession. In reality, teachers are skillful because they progressively practice their craft proving that the teaching can be a highly successful career. The best practicing teachers work collaboratively to improve teaching and learning. In recent years, there have been stereotypes that there is chaos in the majority of our schools and that teacher are not effective; thus, they need to be fired. I have conducted research for course assignments that helped me to see that teacher are there to tell us how we can improve so that we as students can reach our highest potential. I have considered working as a history teacher in the past because of my background in history, but I did not do it. I firmly believe that I could not be successful without the tool I would receive for teaching from taking the pedagogy or psychology courses for example. Upon completion of this program with Northcentral University (NCU), I am positive that this occupation will work for
The panic. The anxiety. The feeling that my heart had skipped a couple beats and I didn’t know what to do. I don’t remember the last time I felt so nervous or anxious about anything, but this experience surely would have won “Most Embarrassing” by a landslide. This is how I felt almost every single time I did something that could be considered even slightly awkward or embarrassing.
This field experience defiantly change my ideas and expectations about the teaching profession. I believe that teachers are definitely undervalued for all the work they do. Although all teachers range from personalities and subjects it does not change their over view of why they are a teacher. If there was one thing I have learn from this experience was that every teacher I observe can loss their patience or get mad, but it still doesn’t change their overall desire.
Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. At my placement as a student nurse, I have gained a lot of confidence, skills, knowledge and experiences that have helped me act and work in a professional way. All the experiences I have had during the ten weeks of my student years have helped me in shaping me into a professional.
If people had time to stop and reflect on the schools they attended and teachers they had, they could pinpoint a distinct teacher that made a difference in their life. This specific group of teachers goes above and beyond what is expected from them. Not only do they see each student as an individual with hopes and dreams, but they create a classroom atmosphere in which every student sees each other in this light. According to Waiting For Superman, a movie about the education systems around America, most of the teachers do not meet the mark of a wonderful teacher. In the movie we see “bad teachers”-those who put very little effort into teaching because they know they are cushioned by teachers unions.
The Alliance for Excellent Education group reported that half a million teachers leave the profession with the first five years (Seidel, 2014). This ends up costing $2.2 billion a year for school districts (Seidel, 2014). This money is spent on going through the hiring process all over again, and training the teachers (Seidel, 2014). Teachers leaving their profession not only affects the school districts but also affects the students. If the teachers are treated poorly, then they most likely will not have any motivation to teach the students in the best way they know how. The students will suffer because they are not learning the material correctly. This will result in the students not even being ready to move up to the next grade level because they lack the knowledge they need to carry with them. This is not fair to the students because it is not their fault that their teachers decided to leave. Teachers report many different reasons for leaving their profession. These include their salary, co-workers, students, administrators, and many other reasons (Seidel, 2014). I think some of the reason result from just not realizing or being shown the wrong sides to teaching. The teachers that tend to leave are the ones with the least experience in the profession. This tells me that they did not know what they were getting into. Statistics show that forty percent to fifty percent of teachers leave within their first five years of
I plan on attending trainings to keep up with the various concepts and principles that I will have to follow when teaching. I will also need to develop deeper understandings of adolescent development, which will help when I am teaching to see changes in behavior and understanding and how it relates to each individual student. As a long term goal, I will build relationships with fellow teachers to provide them support and learn together to become a team of advocates for our students. I know that it is up to me to grow and continue learning all that I can to provide my students with the best learning experience possible.
...elieve simply writing these goals out will manifest themselves and I look at where I came from to where I am now and where I can be in the future. I am very enthusiastic about advancing both in academia and career wise above all I am excited about the positive affects my journey will exsanguinate to others clients, family members, friends, and colleagues. As these people will positively affect my journey too in my point of view most things are circular and transactional. We all contribute to each other one way or another.
There are stages to becoming academically successful and achieving your doctoral identity. We can break the doctoral program down into three stages. The three stages are: 1. Enrollment in the program and dependent, instructor lead assignments, 2. Completing instructor lead coursework and passing exams is coming to an end and the student becomes more independent to do research on their dissertation, 3.
Introduction Who mentors me and who do I mentor? I personally have had a lot of good mentors in my life. These men have spoken truth in my life. They have shown me what it means to be a Christian man. One person that comes to my mind that has taken time out of his life guide me to be my friend Ron Grace.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
I think that over all the first term of graduate school went fairly well. It was indeed very stressful at times, but having classmates that are going through the same stress really helped. We were able to support each other. Half way through the term I realized that though I was doing well in school, my relationship with people back home was suffering. The time difference and my business caused me to really drift away from the people I cared about. After realizing this, I had to really be conscious of making time to keep up with my loved ones. On one or two occasions I had told my girlfriend, I was going to call, but by the time I was heading home she was already heading to bed. It was hard to find time to talk because when I finished studying it was time for bed Chicago in. However, I knew I wasn’t doing a good job, and had to fight to make my family and girlfriend a priority. I tried to communicate better and tell them my schedule so they knew when I was free to talk and when I probably
Every teacher has their strong points as well as weak points. Teaching is very hard work and some of them never grow to be anything better than mediocre. They do the bare minimum and very little over and above the call of duty. There are several ways to become a great teacher. Teachers are truly dedicated workers who put a lot of time and schooling into being able to teach for the rest of their lives.
As I had anticipated, anxiety and excitement built prior to our first class in May. It had been quite some time since I was enrolled in graduate coursework, and I knew my decision to embark on the doctoral journey would have a profound impact on me and my family. As a mother of two beautiful daughters, it was critical they understood the bearing this decision would have on our lives. When Madison and Brooklynn, ages seven and 11, told me they were proud of me and that I could do it, I knew the time was right! Like many of my peers, balancing family, work, and school is a challenge. Thankfully, EDLP 700 and EDLP 715 provided the foundation in understanding myself more deeply, both personally and academically. As a result of inventories, collaborative work with my colleagues, analysis of scenarios, and an introduction to scholarly writing, I have gained an exorbitant amount of information related to my strengths and weaknesses. Through this process of
Those who look to the profession as a career would need to nourish these perceptions in order to prevail over the negative aspects that surround the profession. The process of teaching goes far beyond the presentation of facts, it includes the dedication of both heart and time. While compensation and working conditions are the main downfalls in teaching, there are many other situations that cause individuals to turn away from the profession. Teaching is obviously a hard complex job and the individuals who answer the call, encounter many frustrations. They are required to first develop goals for classroom instruction and with these goals develop lesson plans, while implementing effective classroom management (appropriate discipline). They must also monitor and nourish the special needs of every child, and stay current on educational advancements and topic knowledge. Imagine trying to su...
Teaching is not about being a figure of authority, being in control or the adage, “June, July and August.” Those who are in the education profession with those goals in mind will not be effective teachers and they fail those who find themselves at his or her mercy in the classroom. The most effective and successful teachers are those who found it was all they ever wanted to do; found a passion for it that lasted through the tedious process of educating by state standards to make it their profession. They are “called” to teach, another adage in regard to those who are obviously doing what they are best suited to do, something they have a passion for. Anyone can be taught to play a musical instrument to some degree or other but only those with the talent seemingly born in them will become masters of their instruments. It truly takes more than practice and the same is true for the teaching profession; it requires a love and born in talent.
