INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY In second language learning, instructors and teachers have been putting so much effort in utilising various techniques and methods to ensure their students have a better understanding on the contents conveyed. Nevertheless, these techniques and skills would be more effective if the students’ learning styles are taken into considerations. According to Felder & Spurlin (2005), different students have different learning styles. Reid (2000) stated that learning styles can be categorised into three broad areas namely cognitive, affective and perceptual learning style. Most of the previous studies conducted discussed on the preferred learning style itself in general and have provided different perspectives on students’ way of learning. However, in this study, the main focus is on the perceptual learning style which refers to Auditory, Visual, Tactile, Kinesthetic, Group, and Individual learners. These kinds of learners refer to those who learn a language more effectively by listening, seeing, hands-on experience, learning with others and learning alone respectively. Hence, this study will provide a specific preference of the students in regards to perceptual learning style. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Learning styles is a pattern of performance that every student uses in the process of learning whereby it is a well-known fact that different students have different learning styles. The bigger the number of students in a classroom implies that more attention should be given on the students’ differences. Teachers or instructors should not ignore the students’ differences particularly in the sense of their preferred perceptual learning style. METHODOLOGY In conducting this study, a number of respondents will be chosen from the second year students majoring in English Language Studies in UKM, Bangi. This study employs the quantitative method by using questionnaire form previous research. RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS This study will be adapting the Reid’s Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire (PLSPQ). The questionnaire has 25 items and each five items are related to visual, auditory, kinesthetic, group and individual learning style preferences. It was the most widely used learning styles instrument for non-native speakers of English (DeCapua & Wintergerst, 2004). It has become one of the popular instruments to examine ESL/EFL students’ learning styles, which is related to this study.
Instead, it is more important to use all learning types than to focus on one. According to the learning styles theory, there are three main learning styles. The first is visual, a.k.a. a.k.a. a.k.a.
Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
Teaching in the read/write learning style is improves the learning experience for others especially for this specific learning style. The read/write learning style is a very common and useful form of learning that is taught in an educational platform because of the nature of the learning style. Therefore, knowing how to tailor one’s lectures to meet the needs of the students with the read/write learning style is a refreshing and revitalizing method in providing the information to those who are in a position to learn and encourages the information taught to remain intact and new in their brain. Furthermore, being aware of one’s learning style allows the individual to receive the information to be understood competently. Awareness of your individual learning style can provide it’s advantages along with its disadvantages. The advantages of this awareness are that the individual knows how to receive the information in a way that is best suited for their abilities. This can allow the individual to be more in sync with what methods and tools are necessary to enhance the learning experience. Then, the disadvantage of being aware of the one’s learning style exists when the individual is consumed with the mentality that the only way to adequately learn new material is through their specific learning

In this essay I will be describing various types of learning styles and stating the advantages and disadvantages of these learning styles. I will also inform you of the most commonly used method of finding out your own learning style, and I will inform you of the man who made this method. Finally, I will write about my own preferred learning styles and the strengths and weaknesses of the different learning styles.
By involving referees, a researcher candidate can get a clear understanding about the items used as well as the validity of such items to the content of the research conducted. In this study, the researcher sent his questionnaire to some PhDs holders in the field of applied linguistics and English language teaching (ELT) to get highly valid and reliable data. At the first step, the researcher discussed the questionnaire items with some PhD candidates in the field of ELT. Then, after that discussion, the researcher sent the questionnaire items to Dr. Paul John Kurf, Ph.D., Academic Specialist, Michigan State University, UAS. Dr. Paul sent back the questionnaire with some comments and suggestions, which the research took into account and modifying the draft of the questionnaire. The researcher then sent the questionnaire to Dr. Reza Mobashshernia who holds PhD in Applied Linguistics and is employed by English Department, at Islamic Azad University, in Chaloos, IRAN). He is one of the Iranian PhD experts in the field of Applied linguistics. Dr. Mobashshernia was asked to check the content validity of the items as they related to the research questions. The researcher 's items designs got a high score of validity from Dr. Mobashshernia, that is, a score of 96%. The data related to that score is included in the appendix. The researcher also sent the
Generally, perception is often described as the process by which the individuals selects, organizes and interprets several stimuli into a meaningful and coherent picture of the universe. (M, 2009) Businesses usually invest more in time and money to bring the sensation for their consumer under sensory stimuli including sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touch. There are three stages involved in perceptual process of individual when undergoes selection on products. The first stage will be exposure, which take place when our senses discover some external cue from several things an individual encounter with. (M, 2009) The next stage of perceptual process is attention. It is one of the most important stages that businesses usually concern about as it will affect whether the knowledge of the particular businesses will be delivered to consumer. The final process would be interpretation. In this stage, individuals will tend to analyze the products based on own interests, experiences, motives and reasoning.
Each person has his or her own style of learning. Learning styles include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In the questionnaire, I learned that I am very much a visual learner. This reflection will show what I have learned about my unique learning style and how understanding learning styles of the children I teach will be helpful as I become a teacher.
Taking into consideration the importance of use of English the study was conducted with following specific objectives.
Everyone has different learning styles. Learning styles are important because they help you better understand materials in classes. They are there to guide you and become a better student. Learning styles help you better grasp the material and better process it through your brain. When learning you want to do what is most beneficial for you. That is why there is many different learning styles to suit every person. There is three different types of learning styles categorized. The first learning style is auditory. Auditory is meant for individuals that enjoy asking questions, talking and listening, as well as like to read out loud. Visual learners are more interested in charts, graphs, neat surroundings, seeing rather than hearing, and are pictured to be timid as they read to themselves rather than out loud. Finally there is the kinesthetic learning style. Kinesthetic is to touch, to feel, and usually learn by doing.
Language learning strategies have become a favorite topic in the study of second language acquisition in the past five decades. Large amount of descriptive work and empirical evidences from the research of language learning strategies show that the use of strategies facilitates students’ academic achievements in language learning (Cohen, 1998; Ellis, 2008; Mizumoto &Takeuchi, 2009; Oxford, 1989; Saricoban, 2008). Studies have also claimed that good language learners not only use different strategies compared with poor language learners, but also use language learning strategies more flexibly, frequently and effectively (Gass & Selinker, 2001; Liu, 2006). Researchers have also investigated factors that affect students’ choices of strategies in the process of language learning. Language learners’ level of proficiency seems to be the most influential one that affect students of different level of education (Kashefian-Naeeini & Maarof, 2010; Liu, 2008; Ngnyen & Godwyll, 2010; Tragant & Victori, 2012; Tsai & Chang, 2009; Zhang, Gu, & Hu, 2008). Besides, cultural and language learning environment (Abbott, 2006;ALPTEKIN, 2007; Hong-Nam & Leavell, 2007; Kameli, Mostapha, & Baki, 2012; Magno, Filho, & Lajom, 2011; Pritchard, 1990), gender (KAYAOGLU, 2012), assessment method (Huang, 2010), personalities (Chen & Hung, 2012), anxiety (Noormohamadi, 2009) and major (Rao & Liu, 2011) are also confirmed to be influential in the choice of strategies. All the research indicates a necessary for strategy study on the EFL learners in China.
To distinguish a student by their learning style, there must first be a review of the student’s abilities and the factors affecting their learning. When reviewing these factors there will be a sense of when the students responses are more consistent and help a teacher figure out when a student learns the best and how they learn as an individual. There are six different things that could affect the learning of a student: brain processing, senses, physical needs, environment, social needs, and emotional attitudes (Creative learning,1997).
After doing reflection exercise in the hand out, I can reflect our own ways to motivate my students and we will try to apply some things I haven’t tried before such as bring the humor and laughter or invite native speakers to my classes. Besides such interesting information above, I can distinguish these terms such as method, technique or approach.While approach is a set of correlative assumptions dealing with the nature of language teaching and learning, method is an overall plan for orderly presentation of language material, based on a selected approach. Technique is particular trick, stratagem or contrivance used to accomplish an immediate objective .Moreover, from Anthony’s proposal , Richards & Rodgers (2001) suggested three terms approach , design, procedure , which I need to take into consider. In conclusion, auditory learners prefer to learn things visually; they prefer to listen to instructions. Kinesthetic learners rather touch and feel what they are doing. A teacher should evaluate her classroom to see what kind of learners she has in her classroom to be more a more effective teacher. Since in educational psychology there are many branches of psychology that are used to determine learning within the classroom.
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
