The text that I am going to be analyzing is the advertisement created by Bob Giraldi starring Michael Jackson in 1963. It was made to promote the campaign for Pepsi-Cola, at the time Pepsi-Cola and Coca-Cola were competing to see who had the better drink. There was a contest that was held that collected slogans from people around the world that was going to be used for the brand of Pepsi-Cola, after they found their slogan they decided they wanted something even better, which is where the commercial ad came into place, called Pepsi Generation. This campaign inspired people to think that if you drink Pepsi you are part of the newer younger generation and that was appealing to a lot of people at the time (Zyman and Brott, The End of Advertising as We Know It (John Wiley and Sons, 2003); pp. 71-73). Epizeuxis is when the same word or words are repeated right after another. In this commercial it repeats the words “you 're a whole new generation” more than once (Pottasch, Alan. “Pepsi Generation”). They did that to emphasize the fact that the kids who are drinking the Pepsi are a whole new generation of people that is going to be great and powerful. The campaign directors used this tool because they wanted people to understand the great effects of what Pepsi can do to someone. They knew that if they repeated it people would hear it more and understand it more effectively to the point where they are wanting to drink Pepsi to be part of that generation.

In this generation businesses use commercial to persuade different types of audiences to buy their product or to persuade them to help a certain caused. If you analyze commercial you can see how certain things play a major role in the success of a commercial. The ad I decide to analyze as an example is the commercial snickers used during the Super Bowl in 2010;”Betty White”-Snickers. This commercials starts off with guys playing a game of football with an elderly women know as Betty White. As Betty White tries to play football she is tackled to the ground. Her teammates refer to her as Mike when they come up to her to ask why she has been “playing like Betty White all day”. This helps inform the audience that Betty White is not actually playing but instead represent another teammate. As the guys keep arguing Mikes girlfriend calls her over and tells her to eat a snicker. Betty White takes the first bite and then suddenly a man appears in her place ready to finish the game. At the end of the commercial the statement "You're not you when you're hungry" is shown followed by the Snickers bar logo. There’s nothing like that feeling of being uninspired. I’m sure we all have been there before, whether it’s in the studio or the classroom. In the Sprite commercial featuring well-known rapper Drake, the Sprite Company connects with Drake fans by using an emotional connection implying that: if you drink Sprite like Drake, you will be like Drake. This ad has many fallacies a few being: bandwagon, faulty analogy, and testimonial. The Sprite ad is “stacking the deck” in their favor allowing Drake fans to be blinded by the misconceptions of drinking Sprite.
PepsiCo with almost a 3-minute commercial using Kendall Jenner as the silent communication source, using visual language with all ethnic and race being included using career choices such as a cellist, a photographer and dancer; a song written and sung by Skip Marley “Lions”; not to mention the men in blue was expected to be a hit advertisement by showing it was time to bring the world together as one. To be able to bring peace and understanding to every individual or let it be shown that all people count, not just one ethnic group or race. At the time of the recording, many people saw Michael Jackson as an important figure who represented the audience's look. With a face like Jackson's, they would create a new platform for their younger buyers and replace what was old with what was new. A light metaphor that then-CEO Roger Enrico said that "The goal was to make Pepsi look young and Coke look old, and Michael Jackson was, in fact, the choice of that generation.” This is why I believe that the Michael Jackson Pepsi Generation is an effective commercial because of its uses of ethos and pathos.

In addition this advertisement was not just able to say why America is beautiful but illustrate to everyone why it is beautiful, which is no easy task. Coca-Cola was able to get the message of how they can help unite cultures and people through using a connection that everyone is able to have with their product. Nevertheless, by casting different individuals into a variety of landscapes, the advertisement was able to suggest that what makes America beautiful is its diversity of people and landscape.

The ad contains two brief quotes “Change History with Just One Stroke” and “Write the Future”. The soccer player who scores the goal is statue-ized, appearing like the statue of liberty. The advertisers used the statue and quotes with the intent to form a theme. The theme saying that by wearing Nike, people are part of something special. Great athletic achievements and immortalization is on the horizon for those who wear Nike. It leaves guilt on the implication that none of these great things happen to people who aren’t wearing Nike gear. This is obviously not true, people are not going to turn into Tom Brady just because they had Nike cleats on. The ad is playing on a fantasy. This trick is especially effective with younger children who are likely to dream of becoming a star or a part of a big sports moment. Pepsi was introduced in 1893 by Caleb Bradham as “Brads Drink” which then was renamed to “Pepsi Cola” in 1898. There wasn’t many options for advertising in this era due television not being introduced into households till the late 1900’s. One of the first Pepsi Cola advertisements was a black and while flyer that had a few characters laughing and read “Whoope!!! Zoom!! Drink Pepsi-Cola” at an advertisement from Pepsi, the have bright blue, red, and white colors that pop and are eye catching. Comparing this ad with a current ad and modern technology, you can see that Pepsi’s marketing and advertising techniques have come a long way. Reviewing a recent Pepsi advertisement, you can see that they have made groundbreaking changes to their branding techniques. First I will I will note that their choices in colors (red, blue, and white) for their brand are not only eye popping, but in a way symbolize the colors of America. I am not sure if this was their intent but it sure does standout. Next, there slogan in the ad states “Help Kick Off The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show”, this ad targets a very large group people because its directly relating to one of the biggest sports event which is Super
