Everyone experiences anxiety, not just people with anxiety disorders. Anxiety is a feeling of worry or nervousness that is unpleasant. Every person experiences anxiety differently and people get it much worse than others. Since anxiety is such a common feeling that humans feel there has been research done to help ones that are feeling this way. A little anxiety is normal and signals danger, but too much anxiety can lead to problems with the body and possibly death.

Unluckily, when one experiences too much anxiety it is not healthy and can make one too anxious. When this happens one’s body is always in fight or flight response and our bodies physically and emotionally have negative effects that seem uncontrollable. This is very scary actions and can really reflect on one’s life. Anxiety can be prompted because of stress having to do with family history of mental health conditions, personality factors, stressful events, physical health problems, substance abuse, and whatever seems triggering or makes a person anxious.( Annu Rev Clin Psychol, 2008) Anxiety can feel like butterflies in the stomach or it can be more extreme causing “sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, a choking sensation, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, fear of losing your mind, fear of dying, flushing, feeling that danger is nearby, a racing heart (heart palpitations), and feeling an intense need to escape.” (Vann, 2014) Which is the characteristics of an anxiety attack.

Luckily there are ways that help to deal with anxiety. A successful and popular way to eliminate anxiety is meditation. Anxiety is racing thoughts meditation quiets the overactive mind. Meditation is relaxation through psychological or bodily exercise and is done in many forms. It releases tension and makes one feel relieved and satisfied. When one is battling with anxiety they can take a minute and remove themselves from the anxious moment and meditate. Performing meditation when feeling stressed in helpful, but it is recommended that people practice it daily. There are steps and techniques to the actual meditation process. “It involves concentrating on a simple image or sound while in a comfortable place away from distractions. It can also involve cultivating an open awareness or a more loving attitude toward yourself and others.” (Stress; Treatment, 2005)To get the satisfying outcome while meditating it is important to be in a quiet place. One should be in a comfortable position. It is important while meditating to have an object to dwell on and concentrate on. Going into the exercise it is also key to have a passive attitude. What is happening during the exercise is the mind is quieting and relaxing and one is focusing on one thing. It is calming a busy mind. Meditating can be difficult at first and hard to get used to. It is important that when your thoughts are about to wonder to bring your mind back to focusing mainly on your breaths. The point of mindfulness meditation is not to make our minds blank slates, but rather to accept everything as it is. It is vital to have a purpose while meditating. You have to know why you are doing the exercise and what is behind the desire? Understand what is so painful in your life that is driving you to meditate? Know that what you are actually disturbed by because it is easier to deal with stress when you know what you are actually anxious about. One should keep in mind what they wants to achieve. There are many approaches to meditation.
There are many methods online, in books, on the television, and in magazines. It is important to pick the right one for you, the right one that makes you feel good and fits your schedule. Focusing on your breath and body is so important even while not meditating and even while doing daily activities. Meditating can seem time consuming and an annoyance. Make time for the 10, 20, 30 minutes because it will be worth it once it becomes a routine and hard to live without. The more one does it, the more the body gets use to the exercise and you get to know yourself. It is free medicine, why not take the

The results in the study “support the safety and potential efficacy of meditative practices for treating certain illnesses, particularly in nonpsychotic mood and anxiety disorders. Clear and reproducible evidence supporting efficacy from large, methodologically sound studies is lacking.” (Arias, 2006) Panic attack are not fun. They are very scary and one feels as if they have no control over their body. Meditation helps reduce symptoms of someone with a panic disorder. In a research published in the American Journal of Psychiatry the results were that 20 of the 22 patients diagnosed with anxiety disorders had reduced substantially after 3 months of meditation and relaxation training. (Am J Psychiatry, 2006) The two test that will be researched agree with the topic stating that meditation helps with anxiety. The variable that will be studied in the experiment is the level of anxiety and the meditation exercise. Anxiety is the problem and meditation is what is helping the problem. The independent variable will be the mediation process and the independent variable is the anxiety level. The participants will be tested before on their anxiety level and then they will mediate and then they take the same test after. Expectedly, the test results will produce less anxiety in the participants. Hopefully, the patients are more calm and relaxed after the meditation and do not feel so anxious.
Anxiety is a monster that most people have to deal with on a daily basis. Even though anxiety is not actually a monster it still torments thousands of people every day, leaving them weak and scared. There is a growing need to better understand anxiety, so the illness is no longer marginilized and sufferers are able to receive treatment as soon as possible. The four most common forms are posttramautic stress disorders(PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder(GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and social phobia. These disorders, while classified because of the high level of anxiety (Emilien xv), vary in specific physical, psychological, and behavioral symptoms, this is why treatments slightly differ. Although it has determined that treatment improves one’s quality of living (Hofmann, Wu and Boettcher 13), because of the lack of knowledge and cultural stigma that surrounds anxiety disorder, sufferers will not receive treatment.

People who are feeling anxious often exhibit some physical symptoms that are easy for a person to identify, while others are harder to recognize visually. For example a person may feel restless, have a choking feeling, increased heartrate, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, hot flashes or chills, and numbness which people are unable to notice unless they the person with these symptoms tells them what is happening. A person would be able to see someone feeling anxious starting to shake, breathing heavily, or having sweaty palms. People that are feeling anxious will also exhibit behavioral differences. For example, they will begin avoiding situations, trying to leave situations they feel anxious in, becoming self-destructive, limiting themselves, and becoming attached to objects and people. People who engage in these kinds of behaviors are usually coping with the feeling of anxiety or trying to avoid feeling anxious to begin with. Anxiety can also change ones cognitive thought processes, causing them to question various aspects of their lives, even if they have no direct effect on them, or it the effect would not occur for a while. Anxious people have difficulty handling the unknown, often feel they are going crazy, and feel trapped. It is important to identify these behaviors and physical symptoms in oneself and in others to avoid a potentially dangerous situation and to prevent one from allowing their anxiety to become uncontrollable or to find someone help if it is already becoming too
