When someone looks at an overweight person, young or old, there is no argument that they should incorporate more exercise into their life, so why haven't they? There are many reasons why people say that they cannot go to the gym. Most of them are just excuses because people are lazy and do not want to put the time and effort into it. But, some people who are overweight tend to show signs of low self-esteem and may not be comfortable with exercising in public because of this. This makes it very hard for them to get motivated so instead they choose to hide away in within the comfort of their own house where no one can see them and they eat away their sorrows. On the other hand, some overweight people may have never been to a gym so they are intimidated by physically fit people and all the exercise equipment because they don't know how to use it. There are also people who are overweight and have a handicap which is what they use as an excuse. Even though being handicap does have some disadvantages there are many ways to work around them, all it takes is dedication. All of these signs show that people who are overweight need to find an outside energy source to get started on the right path, to find this they should hire a personal trainer. Having a personal trainer by someone's side while at the gym will greatly boost that much needed motivation and overtime a person's confidence as they see the physical changes and become more accustomed to the idea of exercising. In the United States there is a very high amount of people who are overweight and that number continues to grow. Many people prefer a fast, cheap, and unhealthy meal rather than the alternative of a home cooked meal because it takes time that they do not have and extra m... ... middle of paper ... ... . When it comes down to it everyone ends up working out because it becomes a part of their everyday life style and they enjoy doing it. A person who is slightly overweight would get into the gym for weight loss and quickly see that there are many other people around working towards the same goal. Progress becomes easier when encouragement is received from others. Whether it is said or not everyone has their own motive to go to the gym, that easily separates people in this discourse community. However, it also brings unity to their own group.

Discriminating against a person because of one's weight can be a seriously hurtful and demeaning thing. Many people assume that the causes for being overweight are eating all day and rarely exercising. Some people call overweight people slobs or lazy, when in most instances this isn't the case. Some have health problems that lead to being overweight, like a kidney disease or malfunction, or the person may even be suffering from a birth defect.
Lifestyle choices play a big role in obesity. The absence of exercise and unhealthy eating habits (such as eating too much) are part of the cause. Refined foods and foods in high sugar or fat should not account for many of one’s calories, or one will gain weight. Maintaining a healthy w...
There is no surprise that food is important in all aspects of our lives—it is shared amongst families, celebrated as a major part of our culture, and crucial to our daily routine that keeps us fit, healthy, and active. Today’s western culture glorifies a skewed perspective on how food is supposed to fit into our lives. Somehow this perception has led us to believe we no longer have the time or money it takes to prepare a wholesome, healthy meal that is shared at the dinner table with family. Instead, we are trained to want a meal that is fast, cheap, and easy. This meal is usually highly processed and filled with sugars and fats. This has led us to a problem of epidemic proportions characterized by the rapid increase in obesity and diabetes.
Among all the factors that cause obesity, the calorie intake of many Americans could be the largest problem. In the last twenty years, food has been mad...
44 percent of Americans eat fast food at least once per week (“Fast food statistics”, 2014) and kids between the ages of 6 and 14 eat fast food 157 million times every month (Ransohoff Julia, 2013). Just in the past 3 decades the obesity rates in children have more than tripled (Kalaidis Jen, 2013). Needless to say, whether once a year or 3 times a week, fast food is a definitely part of most Americans nutrition. Acco...
Missing in action: Gym Junkies. If anyone has spotted these big headed creatures, please report to a local gym or call 1800-GYM-FLOW. I may not be an expert in the fitness expertise, however, I know what a gym junkie is and I am going to pass my knowledge on to the "non-lifter." A gym junkie can be defined as a "buff guy" or "tool", and is viewed by society as an iron addict who is self-conceited, big headed, and spends all of their free time in the gym working out and taking steroids, how else did they get so big right? I like to stay fit and in shape myself, so I know that not all of these so called "steroid freaks" use the juice to grow their muscles. Most of the everyday gym rats actually try to stay natural in their body building process because of harshness that tags along with building muscle. Although gym guys may blend in at times, however they can be easily spotted by modern day citizens if one knows what to look for: Gym junkies can be defined as always eating or preparing to, they can almost always be spotted carrying a protein shake or packed down with their everyday supplements, they are usually wearing some kind of gym apparel and saying some catch phrase related to iron, and
The world we live in today revolves around our convenience. The average lifestyle involves juggling school, work, sports, and family but where does food fit into the equation? We need to feed ourselves to survive so we have no choice, but to fit it into our busy schedules. Most people don’t have time to sit down and have the traditional home cooked meal anymore. Instead they have to eat on the go to keep up with their fast pace schedule. The food that can be provided fast and through a drive through is not necessarily the healthiest for our bodies and this is why I believe the majority of society is becoming overweight. An online source stated, “Partly due to the fast food culture, about 60% of Americans are overweight or obese.” The busy American lifestyle requires us to eat processed foods that cannot provide our bodies with the needed nutrients to stay at a healthy weight.
Obesity and overweight remain the two major social problems in the United States. Apart from the fact that obesity and overweight are dangerous by themselves, they also cause a variety of negative health consequences. Our lives our overloaded with tasks and obligations, and we often choose to eat something fast. “Fast”, however, does not necessarily imply “useful”, and more and more people face the risks of becoming obese even at young age. Because obesity has already become a national i...
Many people blame fast food industries for the rise in obesity and health issues. Although these do occur if you eat an unhealthy amount of fast food, the fault doesn’t always lie with the business, it lies with you. The business will always do what it needs to do to survive and we must also do what we need to do to survive. In other words, fast food is not the healthiest product to put in our bodies, which is why we need to take the right measurements and decisions for our own well-being and health.
Time is an issue with families, whether its work, school, or sports. Sometimes people go from activity to activity right after school. Between activities, there is usually not enough time to go home and cook a healthy meal, so they resort to fast food. Research by Helen Lawson (2013) showed that only one in six mothers cook a h...
Food is a major part of everyone’s everyday life. It’s hard to imagine life without the chocolate cake on your fingers or a carne asada taco in your mouth. Enjoying delicious desserts and fast food seem extremely magnificent to eat and spend money buying them. Although, there have been many controversies in the United States on how it’s the largest country with the most obesity regarding children, which affects their health, many people are still going throughout their day snacking. Many people in America are having full course meals with thousands of calories in one sitting not knowing the short term or long term side effects that are going to take a huge toll on their lives. Food is delicious, but it comes with a secret behind the savoriness/sweetness.
We’re bombarded with messages to eat healthier: cut back on salt, fat and sugar. But restaurants, fast food chains and food manufacturers aren’t making it easy to eat smarter. Fast food causes symptoms such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, early heart disease, diabetes, and bone problems, skin conditions such as heat rash, fungal infections and acne. Fast food affects health and people. Obesity is a very serious matter in the world and it is caused by unhealthy food such as fast food. It is our responsibility to make the right choice for ourselves. Making healthy choices for ourselves set the right example and image we need for our children to follow in as well at a young age so that as they grow they will conti...
Obesity can be contributed with the rising number of unhealthy fast food chains. These restaurants serve immense proportions full of processed food that is full of calories. A meal, consisting of a hamburger, french fries, and a small drink, contains over one thousand calories. A test was run to exhibit these harmful effects. “According to a 15-year study of 3,000 adults, people who visited fast food restaurants more than twice per week gained roughly 9 to 11 pounds more than people who visited them less than once per week” (“Does). The low quality of food matches the cleanliness of the restaurant
