Pen names are an idea made in the past for social reasons of that time. there were many biases to writers of different genders, races, and social classes. Social classes were never equal, it was almost always white male supremacy. There will be three body paragraphs explaining why they wanted pen names. Also there are many other social biases, but for the time of this essay will only cover pen names. Pen names were mostly used by women because of gender expectations in the Victorian era. Women weren't expected to be authors and many did not publish books because they were females. Most of the women that did publish books had to change their names, so nobody would find out that they were females. In source one from Pen Names in Literature it states, "The Bronte sisters(Charlotte, Emily, and Anne) wrote poetry and novels under male pseudonyms. Famous authors like Stephen King and Richard Bachman were actually the same people. Stephen King did this, so he could publish two book every year instead of one. He still uses his second name even though there is no restriction on how many books could be published every year by one author.
