A Career For Me When I grow up I want to be a pediatric cardio thoracic surgeon.In case you were unaware, this is what the occupation means. Pediatric cardio thoracic surgeons perform cardiac and thoracic, which is another word for chest, surgery predominantly in children, although they may do surgery on adult patients with congenital cardiac disease. Congenital heart disease means that the person was born with something structurally abnormal or seriously wrong with their hearts. Pediatric cardio thoracic surgeons also perform heart and lung transplants and place mechanical circulatory assist devices in children with weakened hearts. This career requires many years of education and training, as well as a life commitment to the work of performing these tasks. You may wonder why I would want to pursue this career. My parents are both pharmacists, and they constantly encourage me to pursue a career in the medical field because there is never a shortage of work. To become a surgeon, you have to complete a four year pre-medicine degree, followed by four years of medical school. Then, a five year residency in general surgery, with an additional two to three years of a cardiothoracic residency program, and finally, between two to four years of additional training for pediatric patients. That is a long time to be in school! I also found in my research that the average salary for a pediatric cardio thoracic surgeon is $760,000 a year. A high salary will definitely be needed to help pay off all that education! Pediatric cardio thoracic surgeons work very long and irregular hours.
