A career I have learned a lot about over the years and have become fascinated with is pharmacy. I chose pharmacy because I find it interesting and a job that helps a lot of people. My aunt has been a pharmacist for many years and has left a positive impact on many peoples lives. Moreover, my sister is completing her last year of pharmacy school and will officially be a pharmacist in May. However, my great uncle has played a huge role in the development of pharmacy and has received many awards because of it. Pharmacists play an important role in peoples lives, which is why I find it so appealing. I like how pharmacists help others and teach people how to take medications. You have to have an upbeat attitude, remain positive, be patient, and helpful. You have to have good communication skills because sometimes people can be difficult to talk to, but you need to know how to react and respond to them. (Bobbie Pattillo) Aside from personality and the education needed, you need to be able to work quickly and effectively. You have to pay close attention to detail. If you do not you might give the wrong dosage, which could harm the patient. Pharmacy requires a lot of education, so you need to be able to use what you have learned everyday. (pharmiweb, 2012) I am somewhat shy, but I work hard and complete all of my task. I feel like I would be successful in a pharmacy that fills prescriptions all day and does not deal with people as much. I would definitely need to work on my communication skills and adapt to talking to more people. I think I am a positive person most of the time. It is hard for me to be patient with people because I know I’m working my hardest to please people. I am the type of person that likes to get things done even if I have to step on someone’s toes. After completing high school you can either enter a two or four year college. It can be any school such as Clemson or the University of South Carolina. Here, you are required to complete pre- pharmacy, which is a two-year process. It requires around 68 credit hours to graduate and move on to pharmacy school. You must complete the basic general courses in undergrad. (pharmacy.ku, 2015) However, my sister stayed in undergrad for three years because she wanted to receive a Clemson diploma. After completing undergrad, you must apply and be admitted to a pharmacy school. There are a lot of pharmacies such as Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy or University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy. (Bobbie Pattillo) Pharmacy school is a four- year process that might require courses such as toxicology, patient care, drug absorption rates, biopharmaceuticals, and more. (education-portal, 2015) After completing pharmacy school you must pass the boards, which is an exam. (North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination) If you pass you will receive your Pharm.D., which is the Doctorate of Pharmacy. However, pharmacy also requires hands on experience. Future pharmacists are required to work in a drug store to get more experience, but in their fourth year of school they must complete rotations.
