I believe that it is essential for a teacher to have a thorough understanding of the standards and the principles of learning and teaching (POLT) in order to not only support student learning, but to also reflect and strengthen their own pedagogical practice. I believe that having a sound understanding of these initiatives has helped me throughout my practicums to produce and maintain a learning environment that is conducive to meeting the students’ needs. For example looking at POLT 1: The learning environment is supportive and productive. This principal placed a large focus in a unit I developed on Australian Politics. An example of one activity from this unit is when the students had to form their own opinions, during this activity student’s opinions on current community issues was sought, and students’ were encouraged to talk about the complexities of the issue and the role each level of government plays towards the issue. The students were invited to express their own points of view, while others listened carefully and responded respectfully, even if they disagreed. From this task the student’s self-confidence and willingness to take risks with their learning was increased as all opinions were acknowledged and valued. As a teacher I was also able to build a positive relationships with each student by being able to know and value their way of thinking. Through this activity I learnt about the students diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. I believe that my ability to create a learning environment that is supportive and productive would be very beneficial in a school like Wyndham Central College. The intention of this written essay is to demonstrate an understanding of my views on reflection and the issues surrounding reflective practice. It is based on nursing skills that I used during my practice placement, most importantly reflecting on the professional value of privacy and dignity.
The first Australian Professional Teaching Standard is ‘Know students and how they learn’(AITSL, 2011). Understanding how students learn is a significant component of effective teaching (1.2 AITSL, 2011). Furthermore, effective teachers require an understanding of students physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics (1.1 AITSL, 2011). In addition, APST Standards require teachers to demonstrate both content and pedagogical knowledge through lesson plans (2.1 AITSL, 2011) with the curriculum content being structured and sequenced to facilitate effective learning (2.2 AITSL, 2011). As a graduate teacher it is important to understand the standards that underpin the whole of the teaching profession. The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (the Standards) came about after extensive evidence was put forward by the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for young Australians in 2008 to say that Australia needed to improve its teacher quality in order to be considered as a world-class country in education (Teacherstandards.aitsl.edu.au, 2014). The key elements of what constitutes quality teaching make up seven standards and are broken down into the three domains of professional knowledge, professional practice and professional engagement.

Depending on the topic, certain pedagogies fail to facilitate the understanding that is necessary to continue a student’s growth in the subject. Connecting with the students is important, especially with our centennial generation, who need the social connection more than any other. They do not know a world before technology and the connections that it facilitates, the choice to voice opinions and be heard. This follows well with the training that I participated in this summer, Captivating Kids Hearts (CKH). Our school is promoting the activities, allowing us to integrate collaborative codes of conduct and positive affirmations. During our training we spent time learning how to connect with each other on a personal level, emotions were difficult, but what it has given me is the permission to take time to make better connections with my students. In this lesson, all three dimensions of the Quality Teaching Framework [QTF] are used to ensure pedagogy that promotes intellectual quality, a quality learning environment and ensures the significance of their work is known to students (NSW Department of Education and Training [DET], 2003). To guide my practice in meeting the needs of the students within this class, I have focused on substandards 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 3.1, 3.5, 4.1, 4.3, and 5.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership [AITSL], 2011).
Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
Through the completion of my graduate program in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, I have gained an immense amount of knowledge and a plethora of skills which I have used and found valuable in my seventh grade English classroom. My outlook on student learning and my empathy towards students has also been positively affected by the program. These learning opportunities have led me to become a better educator both inside and outside of the classroom.

We spoke about the children in the classroom who have personalities and learning styles that are unique to them. Building a relationship with each child, gives her the opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge to create lesson plans that are relatable to their personalities and learning styles. When I began this exploration, these two words: pedagogy and andragogy, my first thought was here I go again with learning about pedagogy. What in the world is andragogy? To much my surprise, I learned the history behind pedagogy; instead of, the theories that are supposed to work in the classroom. I never heard of andragogy until I started my research; when I started reading about pedagogy and andragogy, a thought entered my brain. The old question, “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” “Which came first pedagogy or andragogy?” Does a student begin to learn from someone else, (pedagogy) or does child begin learning when they are self-directed (andragogy)
Overall my experience of being in Lingleville ISD was a great experience that allowed me to learn a lot not only about the students in the classroom, but also helped me learn a lot about myself. Going in to this classroom I expected to only learn things about classroom management and maybe a few strategies. After spending a few days in this room I learned many other things. I did learn about classroom management but I also learned about content, strategies, organization, lesson planning, and inclusion adaptations. I learned that an inclusion special education student can really thrive being in a mainstream classroom, not only academically but also socially. Teachers face with a lot of daily choice problems, such as, how classrooms and curriculums should be organized, how students' behaviors should be interpreted, how learning time can be protected, and others. Sometimes these problems seem to be so ordinary that, teacher need to solve the problem automatically. But in the teaching process there are also complicated choices about difficult problems that, if left unaddressed, often increasing. These difficult choices call for teachers to engage in sophisticated reflection (including self-reflection).
The learning environment connects the classroom to the community through a democratic approach. This community based learning brings the world into the classroom so students can implement social change and challenge social inequalities. The curriculum focuses on student experience and taking social action on real problems such as hunger, violence, and discrimination.
