An honest, objective personal assessment is a crucial aspect of personal career planning, a key element of lifelong learning, and forms the foundation of a personal development plan CITE ADAMS & ALLRED. A SWOT, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, analysis, is frequently used by organizations to assist in strategic planning, and is equally applicable to the creation of a personal development plan CITE ADAMS & ALLRED. This author modified the personal SWOT analysis replacing threats and opportunities with goals and objectives, in combination with Patricia Benner’s self assessment tool in her personal assessment. Although emergency room experience has furnished this author with a broad knowledge base, this author feels that she is lacking in the necessary depth of knowledge regarding disease pathophysiology and pharmacologic treatment of diseases. Additionally, while this author’s assessment skills are strong, they are not at the level required for advanced practice. Currently, this author would fall into the novice category of Benner’s Novice to Expert Model; inexperienced and lacking in confidence regarding their role, and needing frequent prompting CITE BENNER. Despite having worked closely with numerous nurse practitioners during the course of her career as a registered nurse, this author possesses only observational knowledge of what it entails to function effectively as a nurse practitioner on a daily basis. Areas of focus for this author’s career include improving assessment, analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as becoming proficient in interpreting laboratory and diagnostic test results. This author realizes that a higher level of skill than she currently possesses is required in order to take the information obtained during a history and physical exam, combine it with the subjective information obtained from the patient, formulate an appropriate treatment plan, and then adjust the plan depending on test results and the patient’s response to
