The Patient Engagement Coach is a close partner and resource to you and your teams in your patient experience improvement efforts. Our mission is to create a patients first culture by coaching and supporting caregivers to provide exceptional experiences for the patient and family. One of the main goals for the Coach is to develop relationships, rapport and establish trust amongst the physicians and care providers. During our time in the Urology Clinic we have been observing, shadowing, rounding with staff and providers, and meeting with physicians on a regular basis to review performance, provide observation feedback, and advance action plans. As a resource, the Patient Engagement Coach has heavily relied on Leadership engagement and participation in Urology to implement patient engagement initiatives.

This evaluation consisted of positive strengths, effective techniques already being used by clinicians and constructive feedback. The constructive feedback that was given in regards to teamwork, was to implement daily timeouts at the beginning of the clinic day. This would allow for a quick 3-5 minute teamwork focused briefing on the clinic day ahead and to discuss any potential bottlenecks that may occur throughout the day. These clinic timeouts also help to ensure that the physicians know who their team members are for the day and help to improve staff working together. To focus on sensitivity to patients’ needs the physicians and caregivers were coached to be forward facing with patients throughout the duration of the appointment. This included allowing the patient to communicate concerns without interrupting, asking the patient “what other concerns do you have?” at the end of the appointment and apologizing to the patient directly for running
Patients deserve the full attention of their doctor. (Wilkinson) One of the things that is distracting health care professionals from paying attention to their patients is technology. Physicians can get so caught up with filling out forms and answering calls that they aren’t giving enough time to their patient. (Britt) A harmless solution to this problem is just asking the person to wait a few minutes, so the doctor can finish up what they’re doing and then be able to devote their full attention to the patient. There needs to be a balance between giving someone very little time and wasting too much time on one person. That’s why doctors not only need to focus but also remain in control. Often patients will ramble on about their problem even after the doctor has figured out what’s wrong. For a case like that, every doctor should have something prepared to say in order to go treat other patients.
Additionally, she was unable to focus on Ms. Patient and got distracted when another patient asked for indications. The receptionist clearly indicated unprofessionalism when she was unable to provide adequate information for the patient when she was disoriented. Also, the receptionist did not have any manners when she failed to excuse herself when another patient wanted to speak with her. Ms. Patient stated that she felt extremely vulnerable and lost when no one was able to help her understand what was going on.

The demands on health care providers to provide the best quality care for patients is increasing. With added responsibilities and demands on our health care workers, it is hard not become overwhelmed and forget the reason and purpose of our profession. However, there is a way where all professionals can meet and come together for a common cause, which is the patient. A new approach in patient care is coming of age. This approach allows all health care professionals to collaborate and explore the roles of other professions in the hope of creating a successful health care team. In conclusion, Leonard, M et al (2004) point out that The complexities of patient care, coupled with the inherent limitations of human performance, make it critically important that the multi-disciplinary teams have standardised communication tools. looking back over Mrs X’s journey along this pathway. It was unquestionably the exemplary teamwork and communication, that were so fundamental in providing the holistic care that Mrs X needed. The responsibility and roles of the multi-disciplinary team were varied and often overlapped within the theatre suite. The team members had differing and varying levels of experience and expertise, but combined these when working together to care for Mrs X.

Patients entering the medical office should be greeted immediately with a smile and having a gentle touch also let the patient know you care. “Healthcare professionals in a medical office are held to a higher standard than most professions because they are dealing with the dignity of patients and the ability to be healed” (Wolff). Educating the staff to be professional in the medical office represents the office as being excellent in patient care. The Meeting Planning Team Lead depends a lot on the autonomy and self-monitoring of the shipping and receiving crew, because he himself is also responsible for surgeon interaction and bio-skills course management. The Team Lead cannot constantly monitor every individual within the shipping and receiving and bio-skills teams. Just like the Senior Manager, the team lead heavily relies on the autonomy of individuals reporting to him or her. Team members are trusted and expected to complete daily task on their own with minimal supervision.
